About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 300 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

Find out how a new European Space Agency - ESA and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency satellite called EarthCARE, to be launched later this month, will provide unprecedented data on #clouds and #aerosols that will help us to initialise our weather forecasts. We will also use EarthCARE data to evaluate our forecasts and to improve the representation of physical processing in the model. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ew29Rne4

🌍🌐 In less than two years, the #ClimateChange Adaptation Digital Twin of EU Digital & Tech's #DestinationEarth is producing the first multi-decadal climate projections at high-resolution kilometre scales, and has set up the software architecture to be deployed in the extreme scale supercomputers provided by EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) LUMI supercomputer, hosted by CSC - IT Center for Science, Marenostrum5 hosted by Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and Leonardo hosted by CINECA. The climate Digital Twin is implemented by a strong partnership led by CSC - IT Center for Science with the involvement of 13 institutions across Europe. It is funded by the European Commission in the #DestinE initiative, through a contract procured by ECWMF. 🌍🌐A satellite image of 'the future,' simulated by #DestinationEarth's Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin. The Climate DT represents a pioneering effort to create operational multi-decadal climate simulations at the scales where the impacts of #ClimateChange are felt. Read about this new system developed by a consortium of 13 European organisations led by CSC - IT Center for Science in our in-depth story ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dzyZXju7 #ECMWFDigitalTwins

🌍🌐 The #ClimateChange Adaptation #DigitalTwin of #DestinationEarth: a window to the future of our Planet. Read our first in-depth story about the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin developed in the frame of the Destination Earth initiative of the European Commission. The Climate DT represents a pioneering effort to produce operationally multi-decadal climate projections. It will provide regularly updated, globally consistent Earth system and impact sector information at scales of a few kilometres, where many of the impacts of climate change are felt. At the same time, it is setting a unique capability to produce bespoke cutting-edge simulations addressing ‘what-if’ questions related to the impact of certain scenarios or policy decisions on the evolution of our planet. The Climate DT is a step change in the way information on climate change is provided, aiming to help face the complex challenges posed by our changing climate. This novel system is developed by a strong partnership led by the CSC-IT Center for Science, involving partners from 13 institutions, in close collaboration with ECMWF, and by exploiting the unprecedented computing power provided by the first pre-exascale supercomputers in Europe of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). The CSC led partnership delivering the Climate DT involves 13 institutions from six countries including: Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (CNR-ISAC), German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ), National Meteorological Service of Germany (DWD), Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Polytechnic University of Turin (POLITO), Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and University of Helsinki (UH). https://lnkd.in/ezHtiNB3 #DestinE #EUGreenDeal #DigitalEurope #ClimateData
