Why do students choose a GME degree over a microcredential? With business schools concerned with the rising popularity of microcredentials - short, accredited courses - it's key that institutions understand their strengths and leverage them for success. According to a recent QS report titled "Business school applicant trends and motivations in 2024", 58% of prospective international GME students are choosing a degree over a microcredential for greater career advancement opportunities. 53% said it was because of the networking opportunities a degree offered. As QS Senior Insights Specialist (GME) Daniel Kahn says, "The future of business education lies in our ability to merge academic rigour with the practical skills demanded by today’s world.” Generation Z are increasingly career-focused, and it's up to business schools to adapt. As an international student in the UK, Polina Golub experienced a rich and diverse learning journey with many opportunities for personal growth, exploration, and networking within a global hub of innovation and opportunity in London. "My BSc International Political Economy and MSc Marketing at the University of London were intellectually stimulating and personally fulfilling, shaping my academic and professional trajectory in profound ways, opening doors to job opportunities both in the UK and globally," she said. "The skills and knowledge I gained have been instrumental in advancing my professional growth. Living in the UK has exposed me to diverse work cultures and networks, enriching my career trajectory since I graduated." As Events Operation Manager at QS Quacquarelli Symonds, Polina speaks to international students and global institutions often, and sees the positive impact that studying abroad can offer; including exposure to different perspectives, cultures, and ideas, fostering global citizenship and preparing them for an interconnected world. "For a destination country, like the UK, international students contribute to the cultural diversity, bring fresh perspectives, and enrich the academic and social fabric of universities," Polina said. "Proactive efforts to embrace diversity and support the unique needs of international students are essential for their positive experience and success in the UK. This could look like: ⚙️Clear and comprehensive support services, including academic guidance, accommodation assistance and mental health support that is tailored to international students’ needs. 🤝Inclusive policies, cultural awareness programmes, and diverse student clubs that help foster a welcoming campus environment and build a sense of belonging. 📄Transparent guidance on visa processes and immigration regulations to alleviate uncertainties and concerns for international students. We welcome the findings of the Government’s independent report from the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), this morning recommending the Graduate Route Visa should remain in place. At QS, we champion the transformative impact of international education, which is a cornerstone of diversity, innovation, and economic growth. Our forthcoming report, International Graduates Outcomes, which we co-authored with #UUKi, draws on the perspectives of 10,500 international graduates from UK universities. Set for release on May 23rd, the report’s insights show the importance of the Graduate Route Visa and the benefit to the UK from hosting international students, including: - 51% of graduates who remain in the UK are employed in key sectors such as healthcare and education, often filling critical skills gaps. - Even after returning home, 71% of graduates maintain a close connection to the UK, with 57% more likely to engage in business with the UK, reflecting the long-term diplomatic and economic benefits of international education. - 73% of graduates felt that the Graduate Route Visa met their expectations. The GRV plays an essential role in attracting students to the UK, enriching our educational framework, and making substantial contributions to our economy. As we consider the future of the GRV, we believe it is crucial to address any potential misuses without compromising its core benefits, including ensuring agents are closely monitored. The evolving policy landscape and changing perceptions about studying in the UK mean that universities are under huge pressure to communicate their value, particularly as global competition intensifies, with repercussion on the financial stability and resilience of UK higher education system. As a trusted partner to the higher education sector, QS is committed to supporting universities and nurturing the ambitions of international students. Join us on May 23rd for a LinkedIn Live session. We will delve into the comprehensive findings of the UUKi-QS report and discuss how to improve the experience and outcomes of international graduates and their essential contribution to the UK society and economy.   #QSInsights #HigherEducation #InternationalStudents Vivienne Stern Jamie Arrowsmith Harry Anderson
