According to a passage of Pausanias, Pyrrhus dedicated two series of inscribed shields, respectively in the sanctuary of Athena Itonia in Thessaly and in the sanctuary of Zeus in Dodona: starting from this reference we will try to reconstruct the ‘real’ intentions of the sovereign and the politics that he wanted to adopt after his return from the expedition to the West and after a (decisive?) victory against Antigonus Gonatas. It is evident, in fact, that Pyrrhus’ devotion for the gods might not be sufficient to explain the reasons of the dedications. Causes of political nature and propaganda are, instead, to be considered crucial. Archaeological data have confirmed only up to a point the testimony of the Pausanias: the discovery of one of the Macedonian shields dedicated in 278 B.C. in Dodona, Pyrrhus portraits with the crown of oak leaves and, lastly, his relics preserved in the Epirotic sanctuary contribute, on one hand, to understand the role that this place played in the propaganda of the king but, on the other hand, open a new problem related to the original preservation’s place of the dedications.

The present work aims to prepare a list of the inscriptions that Polybius explicitly mentions throughout his Histories. The project will explore the variety of angles from which Polybius looks at the epigraphical evidence, and test in what ways he chooses to utilize these documents. Most importantly, it will attempt to c...

The interdisciplinary research project aimed to represent ideal cities based on the thought expressed by Aristotle in the Politics. From the text of the philosopher and based on archaeological traces of 4 cities of the ancient world (Miletus, Agrigento, Olynthus, Metapontum), ideal cities were created, built in compliance with the characteristics of the site and considering the most suitable political shape for them, trying to mimic Aristotle’s thought. For the philosopher, the ideal form of the city is inseparable from its political form, both in force and form; albeit the geographical characteristics of the site must be functionally different. Physical contexts of the four cities chosen have been the starting point for the identification of the political form and, consequently, of the urban shape; this is designed by assembling architectural types of the Greek world. The results were presented by models made with 3D printers.

“Where Shall we Found our City?” Locating the Ideal Constitutions in a Topographical Space in Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero
Abstract: The present work looks at ancient political and philosophical considerations (with special attention to Plato, Aristotle and Cicero) on the best place where a long-lasting, harmonious city should be founded. After discussing both the advantages and the dangers borne
by the sea, the aforementioned authors suggest that the city should be kept at a “safety distance” from the coast. Among them, Cicero alone – with the model of Rome in mind – comes up with the idea that the river may be the safest link to the sea. Cicero, thus, indicates the river as the ideal place for the foundation of a city, as it allows the city to enjoy the advantages of the coast, while protecting it from seaborne perils.
Keywords: Plato (Laws), Aristotle (Politics), Cicero (De re publica), Advantages and Dangers of the Sea, Topographical Space and Ideal Constitutions, Rome.

The essay focuses on the historical and narrative digressions in Pausanias’ Periegesis, exploring
those concerning also, or exclusively, Athens. The author analyzes the treatment and space that Pausanias reserves to Greek history in general, and to Athens in particular.
He pays special attention both to the overall structure of the work and to the book on Attica, with a specific focus on the information preserved by the first paragraphs (I 1-2, 4), which occupy an emphatic position within the Periegesis. Besides, the author reflects on the nature of the research carried out by Pausanias, and attempts to reconstruct the history of the textual transmission of the Periegesis, a work which, strikingly, has come down to us with a title foreign to the writer’s usual vocabulary.

The interdisciplinary research project aimed to represent ideal cities
based on the thought expressed by Aristotle in the Politics. From the text of the
philosopher and based on archaeological traces of 4 cities of the ancient world
(Miletus, Agrigento, Olynthus, Metapontum), ideal cities were created, built in
