Arnoldo Foà, son a of a Jewish-Italian family, was not a star but a widely known and beloved actor. He was also a theatre writer and artist. His life as a young man and actor reflects the tragedy of the Italian Jews victim of the racial laws and of the Nazi invasion. I wrote this portrait for a book dedicated to a Dutch scholar of Italian literature, particularly interested in Italian-Jwwish culture.

This is my "lateral" contribution to a monographic dossier concerning the legend of the Priester John. Many of the other contributions tell what the Western, Christian peoples "knew" about the peoples of the steppes and their relations with the imaginary clercyman-king. Hence the title of my paper, where I draw a sinthetic picture of their ancestral culture, from tengrism to totemism, from their matching colors and cardinal points to their ability in tapestry.

This paper remarks "strange" omissions and reticence in a book which largely influences Italian literature on the Armenian question. In particular, about what happened before 1915 in the Caucasus and in the Balkans the narrative of this book cannot be considered other than quite misleading.
Continuity and discontinuity between the late Ottoman and the early Republican ruling classes and their purposes. Over, before and behind the nation, the State.

Caucasian diaspora was formed when refugees came from their native lands in
Northern and South-western Caucasus, as a consequence of the extermination and
expulsion policies that were implemented by the Tsarist Empire. In the last decades
of the Ottoman Empire, displaced Caucasians not only represented a considerable
proportion of the Muslim population in Anatolia, but also came to occupy a large
part of the Ottoman state apparatus, especially in the army. This paper provides due
preliminary information on this scarcely known topic that pertains to millions of
people in modern-day Turkey, the majority of which are Circassians.
During WWI, individuals and communities from the Caucasus acted as loyal
and willing Ottoman Muslims, but, at the same time, they strove to return to their
lost native lands. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the Mudros
truce, many Caucasians had a prominent role in the “Turkish national struggle”, but
were reluctant to abandon the irredentist perspective; many others joined the loyalist,
anti-nationalist camp and it was a Circassian, the Circassian par excellence, Ethem
Dipsheu, who openly challenged Mustafa Kemal’s leadership inside the nationalist
movement.
Before the foundation of the Republic, some Circassian communities who had
reportedly committed betrayal were punished with deportation from the Marmara
Sea region to Eastern Anatolia. In this way Mustafa Kemal warned both the powerful
Caucasian lobby inside the establishment and the whole population of the “new
Turkey”: nothing other than complete commitment to the Turkish nation would be
accepted and the expression of separate identities would be totally forbidden. Hence,
the Circassians were the first victims of the Kemalist regime’s massive repression. With
few exceptions, the Caucasians bowed their heads, whereas many Kurds did not.

Nearly seven million Turkish citizens are fully or partly descendants of refugees
coming from Northern and South-Western Caucasus and more than two million of
them keep and vigorously affirm a strong commitment to their roots. The public
expression of their identity was totally forbidden from 1923 to 1946, but has been
more or less tolerated since then. After a discussion of some meaningful events of
the republican age, a survey of the current situation of this community is provided.
Traditionally present in the Ottoman and later republican state apparatus much more
than the Kurds, perceived as a privileged rather than a victimized minority, the
Caucasian diaspora looks increasingly less inclined to blend in.

This article is part of a monographic number devoted to the abolition of the Caliphate and analyses three "peripherical" sides of the question: the bewilderment of the Balkan Turks, generally attached to the figure of the Sultan-Caliph; the battle of the anti-Kemalist exiles for a Caliphal, yet liberal and smoothly progressive monarchy; on the contrary, the hostile attitude of the Alevis towards the Sunni Caliphate.

This long essay is based on the precious funds present in the archives of the Italian Navy and consequently provides new interesting details on the action of our Armed Forces in the Aegean Anatolia in the years 1919-1923 and on the developments of the situation in that area. The lack of syntony between Italy and the Allied powers and the harshness of Italo-Greek rivalry come out with particular evidence. The documents i have found and treated provide also a lively socio-anthropological portrait of the local communities.

Less known and studied than its military, political and diplomatic aspects, the
demographic aspect of the decadence of the Ottoman Empire is not less important. Under
unfavourable conditions, the Ottoman state implemented demographic engineering in order
to provide decent subsistence and dwelling to the Muslim refugees coming mainly from the
territories seized by the Tsarist Empire and to increase control over the Christian communities.
The greatest (and most tragic) wave of refugees occurred in the years 1862–1864, when the
Tsarist Empire implemented a policy of extermination and expulsion of the native inhabitants
of Western Caucasus. Later, in the memory of the Balkan Christians, these refugees became
villains, as they were the tool of the Ottoman repressions. This long term process includes the
massive killings and bloody resettlement of the Anatolian Armenians in 1915, which must be
viewed not as a sudden starting point, but as a final “perfect storm” caused by the accumulation
of ominous factors.

This paper deals with the situation of the Caucasian-origined population of Tukey. It focuses on three aspects: the difficult, controversial shaping of its own identity; the experience of the review Jıneps, which aims at connecting the struggle for the recognizing of the Caucasian identities with a a more general struggle for the democratization of the Turkish society; and the Abkhazians, who, contrarily to the other sides of the Caucasian diaspora, look at Russia as a worthwhile ally.

This paper shows and underlines the strongly uncommon approach to WWI of Turkish historiography and public opinion. The WWI is commonly approached as part of a longer continuous turmoil leading to the foundation of Republic (1923) and two episodes (Gallipoli battle and the bloody cleansing of the Anatolian Armenians) absorb the better part of interest and intellectual energies. About the latter issue, the recent debate is narrated and discussed in detail.

A critical assessment of what we know and can suppose on this important religious thinker and politician of late-XIV-early-XV century and his possible followers, a couple of solutions proposed to the scientific community about a couple of unclear informations coming from the sources (for instance, the "church" where Bedreddin is told to have been born in our opinion could be the private chapel of the Chirstian fortress Bedreddin's father had conquered), many philological remarks and final observations on his/their place in modern Turkish culture.

The so-called dönmes were (are?) Jews who followed (follows?) the messianic call of Sebbatai (or Shabbatai) Zevi, formally following Sunni Islam; in Turkey they, even more than "normal" Jews, have been classical objects of conspiracy theories nurtured by ultra-nationalistic and fundamentalist circles. In 1942, in the implementation of the Capital Tax Law, they were for the first and – so far as I know – the last time officially classified as a separate group with a special status.  In Ottoman age their main center was Salonica, where they had a great impact on social and economic life, so much so that they were called also Selanikli (Salonicans). In the context of the aforementioned hostile theories, Mustafa Kemal himself (who was born in Salonica) happened to be “accused” of having Jewish origins and/or to be a dönme. Indeed, in late Ottoman age they generally shared progressive views, many were freemason and many (often these same individuals) joined the movement of the “Young Turks”. They were compact towards the “others” and maintained strict secrecy about their religious practices. Therefore the problems scholars generally face in retracing the history of Turkish Jews are far greater with regard to the dönmes.

This article shows the structural problems of the Turkey shaped by Mustafa Kemal, and so the far and near causes of the success and charisma of the present President of the Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. For years he has been representing a peaceful and positive revenge of the society on the State, but now, in the frame of the feud with the Gülenist movement, he embodies a deeper anti-intellectual drive. This work argues that one of the consequences of this regressive mentality, matched with the authoritarian involution of Erdoğan's régime, can be a serious qualitative deficit in Turkish ruling class.

The topic of this work is how the Italians of Smyrna, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and some prominent Italian politicians conceived to restore and even reinforce Italian presence and power after the terrible fire which destroyed large areas of the city immediately after Turkish reconquest. These aims and project were conceived and discussed in the very same days when Fascist party came to power. English version of my monography (Italian original 2014), a comprehensive account of the origins, the core years and the aftermath of the massacre and forced exodus of the native population of the North-western Caucasus. It contains the full transcriptions of very important documents in French, documents which were since now roughly known or unknown. It presents and discusses also some relevant Italian reports, one of them defining in 1862 Russian operation "war of extermination". The book presents also a conceptualization of this tragedy in comparison with other tragedies commonly acknowledged as genocide.

This is the single comprehensive scientific book in Italian on the tragedy of the Circassians in the XIXth Century. On the strictly documentary side, it contains the full transcription of the documents of the Italian consulate in Trebisond and above all of very important documents in French that have been known until now only partly and imperfectly through English reports. The book is not only on the forced exodus of the Circassian but also on their merging in the growing Turkish nation and on the difficult emergence of the recollection of the experienced tragedy in the republican age. Comparisons with and reflexions on the much more known Armenian tragedy are present. Turkish translation published, English translation in progress.

This book was the the first comprehensive study on this issue. It enquires the involvement of Italy in the last step of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. After the WWI from the very beginning Italy acted much more as an adversary rather than a shareholder of the official allied Turk policy and supported the Turkish national struggle, in the hope to be rewarded in the future. A large trasversal front of public opinion - from the extreme left to the extreme right, including catholics - stood for Turks against English and Greeks. The failure of this soft-colonialist project had serious - before my book quite forgotten - effects in the lack of reputation of liberalism and in the coming to power of Mussolini.
