The concept of “home” is a crucial leitmotiv in the history of Swiss cinema. More specifically,
Heimat – a concept that intersects with that of “home” without overlapping with it – was an
important issue in Swiss cinema since the silent film era, and became central during the 1940s
and 1950s: the golden age of the Swiss Heimatfilm. In these films, patriotic cultural values are
projected onto idyllic natural landscapes, which become the materialization of the concept of
Heimat itself. New Swiss Cinema marked the beginning of a modern, critical, urban national
cinematography in the 1960s. Since this point, the concept of Heimat, instead of being dismissed,
has been criticized.
In my article, I will argue that this critique can be perceived particularly in Swiss films
related to the Italian diaspora. In many of these films the idyllic representation of Heimat is deconstructed
through the representation of a claustrophobic, precarious or even uncanny domestic
sphere. For many migrants in these films, to be at “home” simply becomes a dream.
Focusing on the analysis of a representative corpus of films, my article intends to bring to
light the complex relationships between home, Heimat and diaspora and, in doing so, to contribute
to the debate which flourished in the social sciences and in media studies around these concepts
and their representations.

This paper aims at analyzing Gertrud Pinkus’s docu-fiction Il valore della donna è il suo silenzio (1980), a Swiss and German coproduction, its genesis, and its circulation amongst Italian migrant women in Switzerland. Pinkus’s film is one of the few works of the twentieth century that deals with Italian emigration from a gendered perspective. It tells the story of a woman who emigrates from the South of Italy to the city of Frankfurt. The analysis of the film focuses on the family life of the female protagonist and her motherhood; the analysis of its circulation builds on the political aspect of its reception. The author supports this analysis with a methodology taken from so-called new film history, with an historical contextualization and reference to gender studies.

Classical Hollywood cinema has always exalted youth and beauty, while pushing old age to the sidelines. The last scene of "Sunset Boulevard", where Nora Desmond walks down the stairs of her villa, has become part of the collective imagination: the feminine body of the silent star descended into madness to escape the contempt and forgetfulness of the film business. In recent years, the social sensitivity towards old people and their media coverage has increased, and cinema seems to have discovered a passion for the aged body. The presence of mature or old female stars is no longer a taboo, but an element to be valued. This article focuses on the documentary genre and dwells on a specific film that has not received the attention it deserves: "The Last Diva" (G. Mingozzi, 1982), devoted to the Italian star of the silent film Francesca Bertini. The analysis will highlight Mingozzi's "mise-en-scène" of the feminine, aged body and, at the same time, draw attention to the complexity of Bertini's performance in relation to her star image and old age.
