This page provides data on the number of new housing units authorized by building permits. Data are available monthly, year- to- date, and annually at the national, state, and selected metropolitan area levels. The data are from the Building Permits Survey.
Time Series/Trend Charts: Create your own customizable time series Beginning with the January 2015 release, the building permit data reflect a small increase in the universe of permit-issuing places and are labeled as the 2014 Universe.
Final annual estimates for 2014, based on the 2004 Universe, of housing units authorized by building permits for the U.S. and by Census Region, Census Division, state, metropolitan area, county, and permit-issuing place are now available. Annual Data for the 2014 Universe are also available by region and structure.
For the 2014 Universe, monthly unadjusted revisions for 2014 for the U.S. and Census Regions; and seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2013 through March 2015 for housing units authorized by building permits will be released with the April 2015 New Residential Construction release on May 19, 2015.
