‘Game of Thrones’ Recap: Daenerys Must Make a Drastic Choice

'Game of Thrones' Recap: Daenerys Must

SPOILER ALERT: Do not keep reading if you have not seen “Game of Thrones” Season 7 Episode 4, titled “The Spoils of War”

This week’s “Game of Thrones” begins at Highgarden, with the Lannister army marching off with wagon-loads of gold taken from the Tyrells. Bronn reminds Jamie that he still owes him a castle for his service to the Lannister family. But Jamie says that the gold is meant to pay back the Iron Bank for the Seven Kingdoms’ massive debts. Jamie then tasks Bronn with getting all the farmers in the surrounding lands to surrender their grain.

In King’s Landing, Cersei meets with Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank, who offers to back her financially now that the kingdom’s debts have been repaid with Tyrell gold.

In Winterfell, Lord Baelish presents Bran with the dagger that was almost used to kill him years earlier, but Catelyn saved him. When Baelish mentions to Bran that there is so much chaos in the world, Bran unexpectedly quotes Baelish, saying “Chaos is a ladder.” Meera Reed interrupts, and Baelish leaves. Meera tells Bran that she must leave in order to protect her family from the White Walkers. Bran gives her a simple “Thank you,” which does not sit well with Meera, given the sacrifices she and her brother made to keep Bran safe. But Bran says he is no longer Brandon Stark, but rather the Three-Eyed Raven.

On a hilltop overlooking Winterfell, Arya approaches by horse. She walks through the castle’s gates and is stopped by two guards. They refuse to believe she is Arya Stark, but she will not be denied. They eventually escort her inside out of fear for what will happen if she is who she says she is. Arya sits in the courtyard, drinking in her home for the first time in years. She slips past the guards and goes to wait in the crypts beneath Winterfell for Sansa. The sisters reunite and embrace one another. They stand before their father’s grave, with both revealing they had long, unpleasant journeys getting back home, but their stories are not over yet. Sansa then tells Arya that Bran has also returned.

In the godswood, Arya and Sansa find Bran sitting alone in a newly constructed wheelchair. He knows all about her list of names of people she plans to kill, proving to her that he has developed psychic powers. He then draws the dagger that Baelish gave him and offers it to Arya. All three Stark siblings then return to the castle, where Brienne, Pod, and Baelish observe them.

At Dragonstone, Daenerys still has no word back from the Unsullied who stormed Casterly Rock. Jon Snow asks for a word with her on the beach. She, Jon, and Missandei walk beneath a nearby mountain, where Jon shows them the massive amount of dragon glass within. He then takes Daenerys deeper into the mountain, showing her ancient runes carved into the rock. He says the Children of the Forest made the markings “a very long time ago.” The carvings show the Children and the First Men working together to fight the White Walkers. Jon reminds her that they will need to fight together if they hope to survive. She says she will fight with Jon, but only when he bends the knee. Jon says the North will not accept a Southern ruler, but Daenerys says that they will accept her if he does.

Outside, Tyrion tells Daenerys that although they took Casterly Rock, the victory was hollow after Cersei and Jamie’s deception. Daenerys is furious and questions Tyrion’s strategy against his family. She insists that she will fly her dragons to King’s Landing and burn Cersei out. Tyrion protests, and she instead asks Jon Snow for advice. He tells her that she will lose the love of the people if she uses her dragons to kill innocent people.

In Winterfell, Pod’s training with Brienne continues. Arya observes and speaks with Brienne, asking to train with her given her victory over The Hound. Sansa and Baelish look on as Arya and Brienne begin to spar. Arya proves more than a match for Brienne, demonstrating the vast amount of training she has undergone since her days in King’s Landing under Syrio Forel. Afterwards, Arya sees Baelish has been watching all along. He quickly nods to her and moves on.

Back at Dragonstone, Davos and Jon encounter Missandei. She asks him why he bears the surname Snow instead of Stark and he explains that he is a bastard. She then tells them that Daenerys set her free from a life of slavery and that all who came across the sea with Daenerys serve her now out of loyalty and gratitude. They witness a Greyjoy ship approaching, with Theon coming ashore. Jon grabs Theon and tells him the only reason he won’t kill him is the good he did for Sansa with the Boltons. He tells them that Euron has captured Yara and needs help getting her back. They tell him that Daenerys has left.

The Lannister army is back near King’s Landing, with Jamie and Bronn at its head. While speaking with Dickon Tarly, they hear a noise. The army assembles as the noise grows louder. Suddenly, a massive army of Dothraki appear on the horizon. As they draw closer to the front line, Daenerys appears on the back of one of her dragons. She burns the Lannister soldiers en masse, leaving the rest for the Dothraki to cut through.

In the melee, Bronn is thrown from his horse. He fights his way through the carnage but is cornered by a Dothraki soldier. He uses the massive crossbow Qyburn designed to kill him before prepping it to kill Danerys’ dragon. Tyrion observes the carnage from afar, stunned at the bloody scene before him. Jamie, on horseback, watches as his soldiers burn alive. Bronn takes aim, but misses. Daenerys spots him below and circles around. She and her dragon come in for the kill, but Bronn hits with his second shot, wounding the dragon. Nevertheless, the dragon is still strong enough to destroy the crossbow.

The dragon is forced to land due to the injury. Jamie watches as Daenerys pulls the massive crossbow bolt from its hide. He then grabs a nearby lance and rides forward to kill Danereys and her dragon. Someone who appears to be Bronn barely manages to knock Jamie off his horse before the dragon spits fire his way. Jamie sinks into the nearby lake and the scene slowly fades to black.

  1. Jackson W says:

Wow, what an episode. Edge of you seat…. will Jon bed Daenerys?

  2. Nancy says:

Am I the only one that saw this ? When Jaime was sinking/ falling in the water, I remembered that is how Branden looked after Jamie pushed him out the window.

  3. Jmcarr33 says:

So, you do not think they will use Jamie in a trade for Ellaria and Yara?

  4. Nikita says:

Perhaps Arya (posing as Jamie) finishes Cercie with the imps blade.
Then both “brothers” do the deed. It is plausible if Deny captures Jamie.

  5. mstone169 says:

Jaime and Bron will be pulled out of the river by the Dothraki and taken prisoner. Tyrion and Jon Snow will convince Jaime that the White Walkers are the real enemy. Jaime will strangle Cersai when she fails to listen about the White walkers and he sees her as pure evil. Jaime becomes King and all 3 The Lannisters The Starks and Targaryns join forces and battle the White Walkers together. Series concludes with Sam in the citadel writing a book a Song of Fire and Ice… or none of that will happen

  6. Flack Daddy says:

You are wrong, the gold hasn’t made it to kings landing yet, brovos dude makes a point of saying they will back then once the gold arrives and cersi says Jaime is personally taking it there.

  7. I’ll be the first to admit I under estimated the Scorpion when Qyburn first unveiled it to Cercei — I laughed out loud at how stupid it looked. But seeing it in action as Bron expertly maneuvered it had my heart racing & I lost it when Drogon was hit. Someone please tell me Drogon’s wound is just a “flesh wound”?!

  8. Michael says:

Great show tonight! I suspect that Jaime is saved by the dragon or Brahmans captured by Dany and carried back to Dragonstone. There Jaime gets word that Cercie accepts Euron’s hand thinking Jaime dead of course and breaks his heart. The Dothraki meet up with the Sullied and March on Kings Landing. Finally Westoros is united but the aknight King shows up near the edge of the Wall near Dragonstone. Then 16 months later we get to find out what happens

  9. reedah says:

Will Jon bend the knee for Dany? Only if she lifts her skirts ;)

  10. GT says:

It’s good to see the 3 Stark siblings reunited after years of separation and not knowing the other’s situation. It would be a heart warming scene too once Jon Snow returns to Winterfell and sees his young family members together again. That Valerian dagger should be meant to end Littlefinger, with Arya doing the deed. Poetic justice, indeed. I can’t stand LF following around and salivating after Sansa, a teenager. He’s gross and conniving! I would like for Arya and Gendry to hookup. It’s only fitting since their fathers (Robert Bratheon, Ned Stark) were best friends. Gendry would be a good match for Arya, he was able to calm and take her haughtiness down a notch or 2 in the past. Jon/Daenerys hookup is inevitable. They’re both hard headed and borne to lead, no surprise there since they came from the same family tree. Seeing Lady Brienne impressed with Arya’s fighting skills is priceless. Brienne is not easily impressed, but for her to realize a Stark child can fight is awesome. I’m hoping Tyrion Lannister is not the traitor in the Targaeryan team. I hope the traitor is Varys so Daeny can burn him alive as she promised she would.

  11. I hate this season.

First episode, the entire “Iron Islanders” get snuck up on and have their entire armada killed without so much as a fight.

Second episode, the Tyrell’s literally give up and get slaughtered.

The third episode, after the dragon’ flames burned the entire lannister army )aside from Jamie and that dirtbag he hangs out with) the said dirtbag Brahm I think his name is runs to a spear gun, now he should have benn killed at least 30 times from the d’th raky (sic) the fiercest fighters in the whole story, but somehow avoids certain death 30 times and grabs the speargun. Having never, ever fired this gun before you just knew he would have no problem hitting a FLYING dragon.

After that I walked out. going forward I’ll read the recap the next day and decide whether I want to watch the stupid show.

I only pray that the last two books are nothing like this terrible season.

    • Aj says:

You wanna be a realist now? After watching 6 seasons of dragons being born, the dead rising, and many other FICTIONAL occurences, you want to be the guy that says “of course the bad guys have terrible aim but the good guy hits every shot” like shut up if you don’t like this season why bother to look it up and then continue to write an entire paragraph in the comments section?

  12. Bronnkowski says:

Jaime’s armor is dragging him down..I wonder if Danny captures him and he joins up with little bro !

  13. ECheung says:

My absolute FAVORITE best-line moment from the entire series…and mostly because of its subtlety!
Remember when Jon Snow asks Ser Davos “How many men do we have up north—ten thousand? Less?”
    Ser Davos answers, “Fewer.”
I wonder if anyone else noticed that Davos’s line is not only an “answer” to Jon’s immediate question as to “how many men…”, but an instance of an underling CORRECTING THE GRAMMAR of his KING!!! (though apparently unnoticed by the latter).
AAAANNNND that this moment itself is a CALLBACK: a season or two ago, when Stannis and Davos are on the flagship headed to King’s Landing, Davos makes a similar statement and uses the word “Less” too—and Stannis immediately corrects Davos by saying, “Fewer.” Davos then says, “What?” And Stannis says, “It’s ‘fewer.'”
No wonder Davos learned how to read so quickly–that guy’s a sponge!

    • Evan says:

I loved that!! The only reason I remembered it was because I just borrowed Season 5 on bluray from the library this past week and binged it.

      • ECheung says:

And, seriously, the only reason I remembered it is because I have two pet peeves, and one of them is when people use “less” or “fewer” incorrectly. Sadly, I’m also a baseball fan, so I have to go through life hearing stuff like, “That’s two strikes on the batter, with a runner on third and less than two outs…” Arrrrghhh!!!!

  14. Mandy says:

Do we all still secretly care for Jamie…. including Tyrion. Would Tyrion really kill Jamie for Dany?

    • Brym says:

Jaime has a Valyrian steel blade, and Cersei’s prophecy from Maggie (sp) is that her brother will kill her and she assumes it’s Tyrion. I hope it’s Jaime. Kingslayer indeed.

    • Jen says:

why is that even a question? Tyrion isn’t ‘killing’ Jaime. Jaime will continue to make his own decisions, just as he always has.

    • Sandy Asirvatham says:

I loved that moment. It will sail over most people’s heads just the way Davos’ grammatical correction sailed over Jon’s.

  15. Edward says:

One of the best Thrones episode to date. A spectacle.

  16. Christine Aquino says:

    Absolutely stunning tonight!

  17. Krystal Masala says:

Great episode! Can’t wait for the next one!
