The 17th Rainbow Reels Queer and Trans Film Festival kicks off Thursday and goes until Saturday — with six feature films, two filmmaking workshops, performances and even a prom night.

Janice Jo Lee, a local musician and poet, helped organize the film festival and said she hopes people will take the time to listen to other people's stories.

"Just hearing someone else's story, I think, is the best way to build a bridge to connecting with them and building a friendship," she told Craig Norris, host of The Morning Edition on CBC Radio Thursday.

"For me, I think, storytelling is how you change the culture. You change people's ideas and how they think about people." she said.

Interested festival-goers can visit the Rainbow Reels website for more information on showings, schedules and ticket prices. There is also an alternate website for information as the main one was reported to have problems at times.
