Complex writing systems – such as the Egyptian, the Cuneiform, the Anatolian Hieroglyphic, the Chinese or the Mesoamerican ones – display a characteristic iconic quality. To various degrees, their signs adopt forms with recognizable visual referents. Crucially, the values of these signs can be motivated in various ways by their visual referents. In a number of different manners, scribes could also deliberately enhance or obscure the iconic potential of signs. The field for this kind of playfulness or iconic manipulation is broad, yet it is constrained by certain rules. The same goes for the general level of iconicity in any complex writing system. The course aims at developing methodological approaches toward identifying the different facets of iconicity as a central phenomenon of complex writing systems. Iconicity is conceived here as an inherently pragmatic and dynamic category. It reveals its potential as a methodological framework at the interfaces between a) the text artefact in which the signs exist, b) the broader semiotics of the (visual) culture to which a writing system is more or less closely related, and c) the cognitive issues associated with sign recognition and reading.

A sign is not iconic per se but can be 'seen as' iconically motivated to some degree, depending on who sees it and the context in which it occurs. Iconicity is thereby an inherently pragmatic category. As a great deal of new research makes clear, fluent reading in complex writing systems involves two pathways, the semantic and the phonetic. On the cognitive plane, iconicity may enhance the reading process, while also being subject to neurological constraints in terms of shape recognition, for example. On the semiotic plane, iconicity tends to support the seeing of the sign as a sign, rather than as standing for some value it represents. In regular practices of writing, iconicity may then contribute to the reading process but also needs to be kept below a certain threshold, if only to allow for fluent reading. This has consequences for the selection of sign forms, the possible formal variation of individual signs, the derivation of further signs and values (through deictic, differential, or compositional procedures), and processes of cursivization. These functional, and ultimately cognitive, issues are also central both to the rise of early writing and to its later development. For example, the age-old 'pictographic' thesis of a 'primary iconicity' in the rise of writing, teleologically evolving towards increasingly reduced iconicity, merits thorough reconsideration, in both semiotic and historical terms. Conversely, certain quantitatively more marginal, but culturally no less central, practices of writing – for instance in ludic, enigmatic, or even cryptographic writing – may emphasize the iconic quality of signs to the point of impairing fluent reading, making the reader 'stumble' over the signs as it were, while simultaneously unveiling other levels of meaning, even non-linguistic meaning. These practices can be crucial for cultural ideologies and native (or non-native) metadiscourses about the iconicity of signs, which often do not line up with what we know about the historically documented derivation of signs. On a more directly visual plane, iconicity may be highlighted in ways that blur the divide between the image and the written, between the continuous and the articulated. As a pragmatic category, iconicity exists only in actual text artefacts. The structure of a whole text, even an administrative document, may itself be iconic with respect to the administrative practices that generated

This paper consolidates reflections from different disciplinary perspectives, synergising them under the umbrella of Semiology (L. JÄGER). Hence will be reconstructed, what is called the public space. Using the example of Small Placards (understood as a special Form of Communication; W. HOLLY) the textual and non-textual constitutions of public space will be focused, discussing in which way these two phenomena bidirectionally interact. In order to do so, different types of signs have to be analysed: Here only written-language, pictorial and architectural signs, as resources of semiosis, can be analysed in their function of constituting space. This consideration is entirely framed by a holistic and action- theoretical understanding of communication (i.a. K. EHLICH).

The term graphetics serves as the title for a scientific discipline that deals with problems concerning the formal and material aspects of scripts. Thus far, this subject has mostly been excluded from linguistic theorizing because there was general agreement among linguists that the specific shape and look of written language - and its varying features, for example font, type size or color - do not contribute to the semantic meaning of written utterances. It is one of this master thesis' main goals to dispel this myth which ultimately resulted in the neglect of graphetic issues. The first part of this thesis gives an outline of the most relevant historical conditions, obstacles, and milestones that are central to the development of graphetics. As part of this historical reconstruction, preliminary definitions are collected and discussed, vocal advocates and their work are presented, and key problems are compiled. The second part presents the draft of a graphetic model that constitutes this thesis' theoretical innovation. Based on the visual properties inherent in German script a hierarchy of descriptive graphetic units and levels is postulated and discussed. The third part - giving this thesis its title - focuses on psycholinguistic, primarily perceptive issues in the context of the fittingly titled perceptive graphetics. The final part of this thesis summarizes the most relevant interdisciplinary theoretical fragments that, together with the presented descriptive model, merge to uncover a range of unresolved issues and scientific desiderata that ultimately serve as a means of incentive and orientation for future research in this area.

2018_Scriptura Franca?
Insbesondere für eine primär „logographisch“ orientierte Schrift erscheint dies unzureichend: „There could have been no initial expectation that what was written would correspond with what was spoken. Language was not the original chief focus of writing ...“ (Baines 2012: 29).
