Association is at the root of all types of learning, even the simplest. Without the association between things already known present in the memory and the comparison with new experiences, human thought would not be possible.

Associations Compete Directly in Memory2014 •
Associations are confusable when they share an item. For example, double-function pairs (with the form AB, BC) are harder to remember than control pairs. Although ambiguous pairs are more difficult on average, it is not clear whether memories for associations compete directly with one another (associative competition hypothesis), as assumed by models that incorporate associative symmetry (bidirectional associations). Alternatively, associative interference results might be explained away by: (a) item suppression hypothesis: competition only between memory for the two target items (A and C are both targets of B); (b) candidate competition hypothesis: The cue (B) retrieves two potential targets, A and C, which compete to be output. These alternative hypotheses could explain previous results in the related, AB/AC learning procedure. Our procedure included a large amount of interference that had to be resolved within a single study set. Participants studied sets of control (single-funct...

The Relevance of the Nature of Learned Associations for the Differentiation of Human Memory Systems2004 •
In a previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study we demonstrated an involvement of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) during an implicit learning task. We concluded that the MTL was engaged because of the complex contingencies that were implicitly learned. In addition, the basal ganglia demonstrated effects of a paralleled proceduralization of fixed stimulus-response associations. In the present study we directly tested the hypothesis that the MTL activation depends upon implementing the complex regularity in task material, whereas activation of basal ganglia does not. Therefore, we rearranged task material such that it did not contain any complex regularity. The statistical comparison of behavioral and fMRI data between the materials allowed for isolating effects that were directly related to the implicit learning process regarding the complex regularity. The results showed a reliable difference of fMRI signal limited to the MTL, indicating a specific functional role of...
How are the constituent features of elements within the environment bound together in memory to form integrated or associated representations? A body of research has started to emerge examining this broad question, with important implications for how we experience the world around us. The present summary explores binding and relational processing across a range of contexts, taking a cognitive perspective in focusing on different forms of binding within working memory and relating this to long-term association formation, before considering how the brain might achieve memory binding.
