Elisée Reclus fut géographe et libertaire, indissociablement. Lié un temps à Michel Bakounine, ami de Louise Michel, engagé physiquement dans la défense de la Commune de Paris puis banni du territoire français, il acquit de son vivant une renommée internationale par l'ampleur et l'acuité de ses écrits sur la Terre et les sociétés qui l'habitent. Florence Deprest propose de porter un éclairage nouveau sur le chapitre qu'Elisée Reclus a consacré à l'Algérie en 1886 dans sa monumentale Nouvelle Géographie Universelle. En situant cette œuvre dans le contexte idéologique et scientifique de la société coloniale à l'âge de l'empire, elle montre en quoi certaines interprétations de Reclus sur l'Algérie sont tout à fait représentatives des courants progressistes du moment, et participent de ce que l'on a coutume d'appeler l'humanisme colonial. L'auteure met alors au jour la dialectique de cette description géographique où l'Algérie colonisée incarne un possible renouveau de l'antique Méditerranée, imaginée comme un espace de mouvements et de métissages, mais également un lieu de l'arbitraire colonial, de la perte d'indépendance politique et de la légitime résistance indigène.

“Learning to see”: The excursions of the Viennese geographical institute and the formation of practical culture of geographical observation (in the field) in the era of Albrecht Penck (1885–1906).

Albrecht Penck (1858–1945) essentially contributed to the development of geomorphology as a scientific branch of geography. As professor of physical geography at the Vienna University, he was one of the first university geographers who introduced systematic academic training with cartographic tutorials and regular excursions. He founded the “Vienna School of Physical Geography”, which gained great international reputation even beyond Austria-Hungary. The article investigates how the institutionalisation and teaching of geographical fieldwork contributed to the emergence of a geographic practice culture. The focus is on the reconstruction of the “field” as the central place of geographic knowledge generation and the contextualisation of the sociocultural and material conditions of the epistemic process of fieldwork. Using the examples of Albrecht Penck’s excursions, the article will analyse the converging contradictions between a critical and comparative geomorphological and an increasingly affirmative cultural-geographical observational practice.

Albrecht Penck (1858–1945) prägte wesentlich die Geomorphologie als naturwissenschaftlichen Zweig der Geographie. Als Professor an der Wiener Universität führte er als einer der ersten Hochschulgeographen kartographische Übungen und regelmäßig angeleitete Exkursionen ein und begründete die „Wiener Schule der Physischen Geographie“, die auch über Österreich-Ungarn hinaus eine große internationale Ausstrahlungskraft und großes Renommee besaß. Im Mittelpunkt des folgenden Beitrags steht die Frage, wie die Institutionalisierung und Vermittlung von Feldforschung zur Herausbildung einer geographischen Praxiskultur an Universitäten beitrug. Der Fokus liegt auf der Rekonstruktion des „Feldes“ als zentraler Ort der geographischen Wissensgenerierung sowie der Kontextualisierung der soziokulturellen und materiellen Bedingungen wissenschaftlichen Handelns. Hierbei sollen die sich in der Lehre A. Pencks bündelnden Widersprüche zwischen einer kritisch-vergleichenden geomorphologischen und einer zunehmend affirmativen kulturgeographischen Beobachtungspraxis untersucht werden.

Resumo: A moderna concepção de Geografia tem sua base em estudos desenvolvidos por Immanuel Kant no século XVIII, os quais foram posteriormente aprofundados por outros geógrafos. Entretanto, no final do século XIX e início do século XX, há um resgate e uma melhor difusão das ideias de Kant por meio do movimento que ficou conhecido como neokantismo, este teve em Alfred Hettner uma das figuras de maior destaque. A partir da segunda metade da década de 1920, emerge no meio acadêmico norte-americano o geógrafo Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992), responsável pela difusão e análise dos conceitos kantianos e hettnerianos a nível internacional. Sua obra teve grande impacto na Geografia, pois o autor foi capaz de realizar o que até então não havia sido produzido nessa ciência, estudos de cunho epistemológico e metodológico, além de sistematizar significativa parcela das reflexões produzidas pelos “teóricos clássicos” desse ramo do saber científico. Dessa forma, a presente tese tem como objetivo central demonstrar a importância do pensamento e obra de Hartshorne à comunidade geográfica brasileira, devido a pouca difusão do autor no país. Além disso, procura-se também enfocar a diversidade da produção hartshorniana, evidenciando os avanços prestados pelo teórico no campo da história do pensamento geográfico, bem como em relação à Teoria e Método em Geografia, Geografia Regional e Geografia Política.

Abstract: The modern conception of Geography is based in studies developed by Immanuel Kant in the eighteenth century, which were subsequently deepened by other geographers. However, in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, there is a rescue and a better diffusion of the ideas of Kant through what became known as Neo-Kantianism, this one had in Alfred Hettner one of the most prominent figures. From the second half of the 1920s, emerged in the North American academia the geographer Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992), responsible for dissemination and analysis of Kant’s and Hettner’s concepts internationally. His work had a great impact on the geography, because the author was able to accomplish what until them had not been produced in this science, studies of epistemological and methodological nature, besides systematizing a significant portion of the reflections produced by the “classical theorists” of this branch of scientific knowledge. Thus, the present thesis has as its central objective demonstrate the importance of Hartshorne's thought and work to the Brazilian geographic community, due to the low diffusion of the author in the country. Furthermore, search to also detach the diversity Hartshorne’s production, highlighting the advances provided by the theoretical in the field of the history of geographic thought, as well as in relation to Theory and Method in Geography, Regional Geography and Political Geography.

Anarchism and geography have a long and disjointed history, characterized by towering peaks of intensive intellectual engagement and low troughs of ambivalence and disregard. This paper traces a genealogy of anarchist geographies back to the modern development of anarchism into a distinct political philosophy following the Enlightenment. The initial rise of geographers’ engagement with anarchism occurred at the end of the nineteenth-century, owing to Élisée Reclus and Peter Kropotkin, who developed an emancipatory vision for geography in spite of the discipline’s enchantment with imperialism at that time. The realpolitik of the war years in the first half of the twentieth-century and the subsequent quantitative revolution in geography represent a nadir for anarchist geographies. Yet anarchism was never entirely abandoned by geographical thought and the counterculture movement of the 1970s gave rise to radical geography, which included significant interest in anarchist ideas. Unfortunately another low occurred during the surge of neoliberal politics in the 1980s and early 1990s, but hope springs eternal, and from the late 1990s onward the anti-globalization movement and DIY culture have pushed anarchist geographies into more widespread currency. In reviewing the literature, I hope to alert readers to the ongoing and manifold potential for anarchist geographies to inform both geographical theory and importantly, to give rise to more practice-based imperatives where building solidarities, embracing reciprocity, and engaging in mutual aid with actors and communities beyond the academy speaks to the ‘freedom of geography’ and its latent capacity to shatter its own disciplinary circumscriptions.

Between 1780 and 1860, geography is progressively becoming a full scientific field in Europe, built thanks to renewed institutional and academic principles, especially in France, Prussia and Great Britain. At the same time in these three European countries, geographers expect that their field will be finally considered as a proper science, compared for instance to history or mathematics. In order to complete this aim, they gradually organise geographical knowledge according to scientific patterns. The French, Prussian and British spheres are affected by a similar process. This scientific and academic construction of a proper geographical field is influenced by a universalistic spirit, inherited from the European Enlightenment, but also deeply affected by political context. Between 1785 and 1860, geographical knowledge is recognised as strategic : it plays a major role in the states politics and, therefore, in the organisation of the different policies developed in this period. By questionning at the same time the field of geography and the field of politics and policy, this dissertation intends to highlight how the process of academic and scientific construction of geography engaged at the same time in France, Prussia and Great-Britain is essentially in a position of tension between a demand of universalism and the progressive nationalisation of geographical knowledge.

The essay examines the cartographic images and decorations present in the Italian public buildings during the 15th and the 16th century, highlighting the context of the topographic representations of the Venetian dominions proposed by Cristoforo Sorte to the Republic. With the same aim, the essay takes into account the professional story of Egnazio Danti, author of the maps which decorate the “Guardaroba” of Cosimo I in Florence and the Gallery of geographical maps in the Vatican.

Only Polish words from Marcin Paszkowski’s “Dictionary” have been published up to now while their Turkish equivalents have never been edited although two scholars (Ananiasz Zajączkowski 1938 and Stanisław Stachowski 1989) intended to do so. In this article the reasons for this situation are discussed and explained, as well as a solution is suggested as to how the source can be useful.

At the beginning of the 19th century, geography is still in a process of being created as a proper discipline. One man especially takes place in that process : Alexander von Humboldt. Among his contributions, he gives pictures an important part in the production of geographical knowledge. Pictures, and moreover maps, are never used only as simple illustrations, but they are included in and as a scientific program. The creation of a new cartographical way, the pasigraphy, is a clue of the importance of pictures in his career. This article aims to show how pictures in the Humboldtian research help to build his conception of the world.

A partir de duas Teorias do Conhecimento, baseadas em Aristóteles (Segundos Analíticos) e Ernst Cassirer (Ensaio sobre o homem), o presente texto explora as noções de conhecimento científico e conhecimento simbólico, respectivamente. Partindo destas, e de suas inerentes filosofias, este trabalho irá arrazoar como tais teorias influíram/influem na epistemologia geográfica.

As is well known, today’s urban reality makes geographers question some traditional oppositions such as city-countryside. For instance, Edward Soja explores the regionality of cityspace in the light of two main concepts: “synekism”, that is “dwelling together in a shared space”, and “thirdspace”,
that is a space considered as third as regards the opposites converging in it. In this paper, I shall assert that the notion of third/thirdness (third way between opposites) is nothing but the cultural legacy of Italian chorographical tradition, at least according to the way in which this tradition imposed itself in Bologna, in the second half of the sixteenth century, thanks to some geographers such as Egnazio Danti and their praxis of chorographical surveying. By interpreting Danti’s chorographical maps – in particular that of the Bononiensis Ditio, where the city and the countryside constitute a unitary lived space, without any sharp cultural boundary – as well as the history of some toponyms and cippi we
still meet with in the countryside around Bologna, I shall attempt to show why the chorographical culture of image is grounded on the middle terms, on the third ways between opposites. In my view, it is exactly from the thirdness proper to chorography that contemporary geography should re-start in order to find a new representational code for lived spaces.

This article aims to make a retrospective of the several theses that for decades characterized the work of Neil Smith on gentrification and the agents and processes inherent in this process. It is based on the discussion and reflection on the several perspectives of the Marxist paradigm of geography and its impact on the concepts and methodology used by Smith, from the late 1970s until the recent end of his academic career, to understand and analyze the process of gentrification as urban restructuring, within the theoretical and methodological framework of Critical Geography.

A la charniere du XVIIIeme et du XIXeme siecle, Alexander von Humboldt realise une serie de voyages scientifiques et geographiques en Europe, en Amerique et en Asie. Connus en grande partie par sa tres riche correspondance, ces voyages sont tous marques par la presence et l'intervention d'acteurs du monde politique europeen. Par leur soutien financier, materiel et moral, ainsi que par leur delimitation spatiale, temporelle voire thematique des objets des expeditions, ceux-ci structurent pratiquement et intellectuellement le deroulement des expeditions humboldtiennes. Aux alentours du moment 1800, la geographie se trouve alors engagee dans un mouvement de construction disciplinaire, questionnant ses objets, ses methodes et ses pratiques. Insere dans ce processus, le voyage constitue un enjeu identitaire fort de l'elaboration et de la definition des savoirs geographiques modernes. La participation des acteurs politiques dans les voyages interroge leur role d'operateurs...

Most important currents in human geography participate in a social theory which is based on the common interests of individuals living in a common space. The role of social classes in the explanation of geographical facts is neutralised by means of three distinct mechanisms : transsubstantiation (social classes are reduced to naturally given facts); abstraction (the negation of the existence of social classes) and « banalisation » (social classes have no particular role in the explanation of geographical facts). The consequence is that a territorial social theory in geography can foster nationalism and the perpetuation of the capitalist order in the same way as marxism is not without link with another totalitarism.

From 1839, Jean-Baptiste Bory de Saint-Vincent leads the topographical and geographical section of the commission in charge of the scientific exploration of Algeria. During three years, between 1840 and 1842, with a team of ingeniors he travels accross the country and therefore contributes to the collect of topographical, geographical and demographical information. The french government demands this data in order to manage the region. The information furnished by Bory de Saint-Vincent are nevertheless astonishing, because he depicts a huge territory, much bigger than in reality, which is almost empty with men. In a geographical and demographical point of view, he deforms the algerian colonial space and turn it into a spatial idea built upon his own illusions. Despite his isolation in the scientific french field and in the french government, Bory de Saint-Vincent remains straight in his conception. This article means to understand how he builds such a theory. In a perspective of spatial history of colonialism, it also intends to question the complex relations tied up between the production of geographical knowledge and the military and colonial context in which it takes place. The example of Bory de Saint-Vincent in Algeria invites indeed to proceed to a global analysis of the context, the discourse and the personal matters. It therefore leads to a systemic lecture of the production of scientific knowledge in colonial context.

Este trabalho é parte de um esforço que vem sendo desenvolvido nos diálogos do Grupo de Pesquisa em Ensino de Geografia na Amazônia, buscando as bases da geografia brasileira e suas repercussões no ensino de geografia. Neste artigo analisamos como a dialética foi um dos elementos de estruturação da geografia crítica brasileira e como ela foi debatida nos anos de 1970 e 1980. Optamos por fazer um debate inicial a partir da revisão bibliográfica de Maximo Quaini, Edward Soja e Milton Santos, explorando como cada um dos autores relacionou a dialética com a problemática espacial. Acreditamos que a maneira como cada autor usou a dialética foi diferenciada e trouxe contribuições diferentes para a geografia. Ressaltamos que este é um estudo inicial que deve ser complementado em um duplo movimento: o primeiro de aprofundamento da leitura sobre os autores tratados aqui de maneira introdutória. Um segundo de ampliação das análises, incluindo outros autores igualmente importantes sobre a temática.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo central ubicar los trabajos con perspectiva de género en la producción cientíca de la Geografía argentina, a partir de la metodología de Análisis de Redes Sociales. Fueron recuperados 1038 artículos cientícos publicados en 16 revistas cientícas de Geografía en el período de 2008 hasta 2018. La búsqueda de los artículos se centró en cuatro indexadores de revistas cientícas: Latindex, Scielo,
Redalyc y Directory Open Acces Journal (DOAJ). Los criterios de selección se dieron a partir de revistas cientícas de Geografía en Argentina, con doble indexación. Con las palabras-clave de cada artículo fue posible construir una red en forma de grafo y llegar a dos ejes principales de reexión: 1) La posición de centralidad de temas como ‘Territorio’ y ‘Ordenamiento Territorial”; 2) La posición periférica de las investigaciones desarrolladas con temas de ‘Género’ y ‘Sexualidades’ en la Geografía argentina’.

L'auteur explique pourquoi au début il a décidé de propager la nouvelle géographie nomothétique et a opté ensuite pour la géographie radicale. Il situe sa recherche ulterieure dans l'ensemble des grands courants de pensée de la géographie sociale et appuie deux idees fondamentales qui lui ont servi de fil conducteur: la science sociale doit être une science réflexive qui remet la société en cause; la tâche de la science est l'explication des faits sociaux, la compréhension empathique ou esthétique n'est qu'une phase preparatoire dans le processus de l'explication.

Resulta indiscutible la influencia, e incluso en numerosas ocasiones el determinismo, que ejercen los factores geográficos sobre casi todos los aspectos de la vida humana, por ejemplo la forma en que se organiza cada sociedad en un territorio concreto.
Esto abarca desde su vestimenta y sus actividades económicas hasta otras dimensiones más espirituales, por decirlo así, tales como sus creencias, carácter y actitud ante la vida, es decir, lo que suele denominarse idiosincrasia o índole de los pueblos.
Como es obvio, el caso de la naturaleza de la Española no es una excepción, sino más bien todo lo contrario. El propio hecho de su condición insular es, sin duda, uno de los elementos que más han condicionado, o al menos afectado, su desarrollo
histórico y esa es claramente la principal razón del interés que ofrece el estudio de la geografía para el conocimiento de la historia dominicana.
El origen de la investigación geográfica y, por ende, cartográfica, acerca de la Española se remonta, como es bien sabido, a los primeros tiempos de la exploración, conquista y colonización de América, cuyo primer territorio descubierto por los españoles, de importancia para ellos, fue precisamente dicha isla. No en vano puede afirmarse, como hace la antropóloga estadounidense Lynne A. Guitar, que «en un sentido muy
real la Hispaniola fue la cuna de lo que llegaría a ser llamado americanos y cultura americana –un pueblo y una cultura tripartitos: indio, africano y europeo». Si bien «no sobrevivió a la conquista inicial del Caribe», el sobrenombre que Pedro Mártir de Anglería dio a La Española, a la que llamó «madre de las otras islas», se reveló muy acertado. Por su parte, el gran historiador dominicano Américo Lugo denominó a la Española «isla sagrada de América».
En cualquier caso, las islas en general siempre han atraído sobre sí la atención de la geografía y la cartografía clásicas, dentro de las cuales dieron lugar incluso a un género específico: los llamados islarios. Una de las muestras más acabadas del mismo es la obra de Benedetto Bordone que lleva por título Libro di Benedetto Bordone. Nel qual si ragiona de tutte l’isole del mondo... Bordone «comienza su descripción por las islas del Occeano Occidentale», y en «una anotación marginal que
se lee en la parte del índice correspondiente a las islas de este océano» el autor señala que «queste tutte son per levante alla Spagnola», es decir, que todas ellas se encontraban al este de la Española. Se trata de un «gesto de prudencia» que, a juicio
de la geógrafa argentina Carla Lois, «parece hablar de un océano en expansión, que podría aportar más islas al poniente» de La Española, dado que la edición de la mencionada obra de Bordone data de 1528,3 cuando aún no habían concluido las
exploraciones del litoral americano. Cabe subrayar el hecho de que la Española era vista como el principal punto de referencia cartográfico, por tratarse de la primera tierra del Nuevo Mundo que había sido descubierta, conquistada y colonizada
por los europeos.
En la introducción de su obra, Benedetto Bordone sugiere que con ella «actualiza los conocimientos sobre las islas: indica los nombres antiguos junto a los modernos y también incluye las islas recientemente encontradas de las que no se tenía noticias
porque anteriormente le lor navigationi no investigarono piu altre che quello che da gli loro antichi ritrovarono scritto». En efecto, los descubrimientos atlánticos que se habían venido sucediendo sin interrupción desde finales del siglo xv reactivaron de forma muy notable el interés hacia los islarios.
En este contexto de gran efervescencia cartográfica y geográfica se ubica el famoso Islario de Alonso de Santa Cruz, cuyo título completo, Islario general de todas las islas del mundo dirigido a la S. C. R. M. del rey don Phelipe nuestro señor por Alº. de Santa
Cruz su cosmógrapho mayor, revela con claridad el ambicioso planteamiento de la obra. El autor, que nació en Sevilla alrededor de 1505 y murió en Madrid en 1567, participó en la expedición de Sebastián Cabot (o Caboto) de 1526, hacia la Especiería, en busca de las islas de Tarsis, Ofir, Cipango y Catay, en calidad de veedor, «pues era hijo de uno de los armadores que mayor aporte económico había hecho para esta empresa». Aunque no llegó a cruzar el estrecho de Magallanes, Cabot sí «se internó en el Río de la Plata y en el Paraná, fundando el asiento de Sancti Spiritus, donde se
encontraba Alonso cuando el ataque y destrucción por los indios», del que se salvó «milagrosamente», y en 1530 regresó a Sevilla. Toda la experiencia acumulada en estos viajes fue muy importante para «sus trabajos náuticos y geográficos», entre los cuales se encuentra la obra cumbre de Santa Cruz, el Islario general, que es «un derrotero de todas las costas del mundo conocido, basado en los más recientes viajes». Tal como subraya Héctor José Tanzi, «sus mapas son también muy prolijos y bastante acertados» en lo relativo a América.
El manuscrito completo del Islario de Santa Cruz debió terminarse hacia 1560, y en él su autor aborda el estudio del conjunto de islas, al tiempo que plantea que es «una obra que reúne la cosmografía, la geografía y la corografía». Por consiguiente, «los textos descriptivos se alían con láminas cartográficas […], en las que encontramos un extenso y exhaustivo inventario isleño». Santa Cruz advierte que «la materia de la geografía consiste en la cantidad o medida de los lugares», por lo que no es extraño que «en sus mapas corográficos o regionales, las islas aparezcan alineadas, es
decir, repitiendo un patrón estético que no está vinculado con la posición geográfica real de las islas y que parece un inventario sin pretensiones de estricta georreferenciación».
La obra comienza con una dedicatoria dirigida al rey Felipe II por el autor, en la que este justifica su trabajo y explica diversos conceptos geográficos. El breve capítulo titulado «Introducción a la Sphera», que precede al Islario de Santa Cruz, constituye «una síntesis o compendio que tiene algo de prontuario, recopilación y sinopsis del pensamiento astronómico del autor, de cómo la Tierra se inscribe en el Universo». El hecho de abrir su trabajo con este compendio «es una manifestación expresa de que la obra a la que encabeza es puramente geográfica sin perder su valor cosmográfico».
Dicha síntesis teórica está basada, «fundamentalmente, en la autoridad de Claudio Ptolomeo». En efecto, Alonso de Santa Cruz, el primer cosmógrafo que recibió oficialmente este título, «une a su trabajo geográfico-cartográfico la tradición humanística, ya expresada en su Libro de las longitudes», así como la experiencia acumulada «con los nuevos descubrimientos». Gracias a tales aportes, el autor escribió «una obra que responde a esta situación»: el Islario general de todas las islas, que es «tratado geográfico y atlas al mismo tiempo, como la Cosmografía de Ptolomeo». El Islario general propiamente dicho consta de cuatro partes, la primera de las cuales se refiere al Atlántico Norte; la segunda, al Mediterráneo; la tercera, a
África y el océano Índico; y por último, la cuarta, a América.
Las lógicas limitaciones que presenta el trabajo que motiva estas líneas, así como sus características peculiares, no restan un ápice al valor del mismo, sino más bien al contrario, toda vez que se trata de un documento excepcional, por cuanto revela el nivel del «conocimiento científico que tenían los españoles del mundo y, en particular,
del continente más nuevo».9 Es indudable el interés que tiene el Islario de Santa Cruz para el estudioso de esa época, dada la utilidad de su contenido, que proporciona un material muy rico para posibles investigaciones sobre aspectos relacionados, entre otras disciplinas, con la geografía, la cartografía, la filología, la botánica, la zoología y,
por supuesto, de forma aún más relevante, con la historia.
Por dicha razón resulta tan llamativo el hecho de que esta obra sea relativamente poco conocida, pese a algunas ediciones como las de la Real Sociedad Geográfica de España, en 1918 y 1920, que emplearemos en este artículo para reproducir el texto de Santa Cruz, y las de Mariano Cuesta Domingo (Alonso de Santa Cruz y su obra cosmográfica), en 1983-1984 y 2003, respectivamente. Sin embargo, el desconocimiento acerca de este trabajo se remonta en el tiempo, varios siglos atrás. Así, Antonio Blázquez señala que hacia 1539 Carlos I ya había encomendado a Santa Cruz «la formación del Islario general», pero este se consideró «perdido hasta
que en 1909 el jefe de la Sección de manuscritos de la Biblioteca Nacional de España», Antonio Paz y Meliá, «pudo comprobar que figuraba catalogado como de Andrés García de Céspedes». Paz lo hizo constar en la "Revista de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos", donde consignó «las alteraciones que Céspedes había introducido en la obra de Santa Cruz para hacerla pasar como suya». Céspedes ocupó el cargo de cronista y cosmógrafo mayor entre 1596 y 1611.

En 1807 et 1810, Conrad Malte-Brun propose à travers deux entreprises éditoriales, la revue des Annales des Voyages, de la Géographie et de l'Histoire et le Précis de la géographie universelle, de fonder une discipline géographique sur des bases solides et communes. Il s'agit de la première entreprise de ce genre en langue française, qu'il convient de saluer et d'envisager comme un moment d'histoire des sciences remarquable à ce titre. Malte-Brun entend en effet accélérer la reconnaissance et l'autonomie de la géographie dans le champ des sciences, en lui conférant une identité disciplinaire cohérente et solide. Celle-ci est construite sur les bases d'un collectif de géographes, qui doit se retrouver dans des méthodes, outils et concepts communs. Si l'annonce liminaire est claire et convaincante, la lecture de ces deux textes laisse apparaître des choix épistémologiques bien spécifiques dans le projet porté par Malte-Brun, parmi lesquelles : la prééminence de la littérarité aux dépens d'un travail d'analyse ; le rejet d'innovations méthodologiques pourtant portées par d'autres géographes, comme le terrain ; enfin, sur l'autonomie scientifique tant souhaitée l'emporte encore largement l'hétéronomie face notamment aux sciences historiques. En analysant ces textes, cet article vise à éclairer un moment historique de fondation pour la discipline, dans la mesure où le projet de Malte-Brun influença largement la géographie de cette époque.

Dans les pays germanophones, l’évolution de la féminisation de la géographie universitaire au XXe siècle fait se succéder l’âge des « pionnières » à celui des « conquérantes », puis l’époque d’une présence féminine normalisée (quoique toujours minoritaire) dans les principales catégories professionnelles de la discipline, et du développement d’un féminisme critique, marginal mais actif. Cependant l’étude du champ disciplinaire en termes de féminisation permet également de considérer ses ailes « humaine » et « physique », de mesurer la diversité des modes de professionnalisation, de saisir sa sensibilité aux événements politiques et militaires du XXe siècle et de décrire certains phénomènes de transferts culturels internationaux et de mise en place de réseaux scientifiques, à différentes échelles. L’évocation des carrières de femmes permet ainsi de proposer une « autre » histoire de la discipline.

This paper emphasizes the role of Emannuels de Martonne's epistemological standpoint as a model for the "vidalian" (French classic) school of geography, which was as much effective as it was a very normative one but also very implicit. First, I try to reconstruct the internal consistency of his views about geography. Then, I show the very strong realism expressed by De Martonne in many texts. Finally, I focus on the different ways by which his writings reinforce this realistic (and naturalistic) standpoint.

Cet article considère la posture épistémologique d'Emmanuel de Martonne comme un patron pour la géographie vidalienne, d'autant plus opérant qu'il découlait d'une pratique normée mais implicite. Dans un premier temps, il s'agit de se demander si ladite posture possède une cohérence interne. Emerge alors un ultraréalisme éclairant nombre d'aspects de l'écriture martinonienne. Dès lors on peut suggérer sa pertinence comme modèle de la posture géographique classique.

With the help of the tools of poetics, this epistemological work first offers to explain how the particular “realism” of the geographers of the twentieth century can shed light on a number of epistemological prejudices of the “postvidalian” paradigm. Next it puts into perspective the movement of rejection of traditional geography that arose in the 70’s, which can be described according to T. Kuhn’s model of the “scientific revolutions ”. We are shown how, over a period of seventy years, ways of writing and of thinking were imposed on the “French School of Geography”, backed up by a position of realism that was largely intuitive, but useful for providing norms for legitimate practices. Since the years 1940-1950, some had perceived the weakness in the classical position, which, in the 60’s, gave rise to a “malaise”, and to attempts at consolidating orthodoxy. On the other hand, the open crisis of this paradigm emerged later, following on a conflagration with a much wider impact (May 1968), which went a long way towards lifting inhibitions against criticism from within. In this context of the collective calling into question of realism, certain authors contributed to the formulation of an alternative position, which could be qualified as “constructivist ”. The Kuhnian model, which was useful in describing the classical situation of Geography, proved to be less relevant from the moment that Geography became truly part of the Social Sciences.

En la década de 1840 una agrupación de la ciudad de México conocida como Academia de Letrán convocó a distinguidos literatos nacionales interesados en temas científicos, entre ellos, la Geografía. Éstos dieron a conocer algunos escritos sobre el país en la revista titulada El Museo Mexicano que se publicó entre 1843 y 1846. This paper concerns the changes in human geographical research over the last 20 years as far as the mainstream Anglo-Saxon publications are concerned. We contend that although a lot of continuity appears through the further co-existence of the three broad approaches in geography (regional, theoretical quantitative and radical), societal and scientific changes have brought new elements into geographical practice. They can be captured with four characteristics: human geography is holographic, ethnographic, constructivist and institutionalist. The two first characteristics are metaphors of the geographical empirical science that seeks to unveil the whole within the parts and the symbolic order behind every practice. The two others are more essential and point to the fact that geography now explicitly examines the socio-spatial reality as a social product shaped by and reshaping human institutions. As a result geography has made a lot of progress. It uses more relevant concepts to engage in clarifying the problems of our time, the physical environment is reintroduced in human geography as a hybrid category and the old opposition between the idiographic and nomothetic approaches is finally transcended. However, there are limits to the postmodern constructivist stance, which imply that radical geography remains a crucial component of human geography in order to explicit problems of social justice.

Normalmente el legado de casi todos los intelectuales y profesionales empieza a ser valorado post mortem – y en muchos casos, digámoslo claramente, se trata de un reconocimiento exagerado de la obra de ellos que tiene que ver más con el pesar de los vivos (y con un “deber” o una deuda ritualizada en el mundillo científico) que con el verdadero aporte del trabajo realizado por el homenajeado ya ausente. Si he aceptado escribir sobre el perfil profesional de un colega – Matthew Edney – es porque considero que es uno de los geógrafos contemporáneos más innovadores e influyentes, tanto por sus ideas y sus proyectos como por la originalidad de sus reflexiones y por su capacidad para revitalizar el campo de la cartografía y de la historia de la cartografía como parte de la tradición geográfica (algo que, por cierto, estaba en crisis y “haciendo agua” por todos lados, con estudios superficiales y estructuralmente deficientes en los aspectos teóricos, conceptuales y metodológicos que exige el estudio de los mapas y, en rigor, de todo material y toda fuente). Y, además, considero que los homenajes más valiosos se hacen en vida. Eso quiero ofrecer.

This paper aims to precise how french geographers started, at some point, to developp a theoretical discourse about scales. It especially tries to interpret and discuss the obviousness of scales for French geographers. This study is strictly focused on French tradition, because a main part of what is examined here was developped during the 1960's, when French geography wasn't very curious about foreign traditions. However, in the 1970's and 1980's, when American and British geography became a major reference for French geographers, this situation started to evolve, including the question of scale. This paper is by no means an exhaustive story of the developpment of scale theories among francophone geographers. This would be a matter for a PhD thesis or more, so my goal is a bit restricted.
In the first part, "When scale becomes visible", I try to describe a process initiated in the 1950' and peaked between the 1960's and 1970's, that put scales out of their status of common tool to become a part of theoretical geography. A that time, scale was related to different levels of reality, more or less autonomous, more or less independent, from which a very intuitive idea of discontinuity in the reality followed.
The second part ("Criticism about scalar realism") is focused on the doxa of multiscalar approach. I try to point an embarrassing side-effect of the emphasis on the variation of observation levels : instead of being a methodological procedure, this is mostly a disciplinary imperative ("We have to study things at different scale levels") that is barely justified. I try to explain when this vulgate appeared (during the 1970's) and I suggest an alternative view through an article written by J.-B. Racine, C. Raffestin et V. Ruffy (1980).

Depuis une quinzaine d'années, les géographes se penchent sur l'enjeu des interrelations entre savoir et pouvoir au sein de leur discipline. Dans une perspective historique et
épistémologique, cet article propose d'illustrer ce questionnement à travers l'exemple du géographe
et naturaliste prussien Alexandre de Humboldt. Son parcours est remarquable, autant par ses contributions à la construction de la géographie moderne que par sa proximité avec les cercles du pouvoir européen. En 1829, Humboldt réalise un voyage à travers l'empire russe, à la demande du tsar Nicolas Ier. Le pouvoir russe contrôle tout le déroulement de l'expédition et ne laisse pratiquement pas de latitude à Humboldt. À travers l'exemple spécifique du voyage asiatique réalisé en 1829 par Humboldt, il s'agit d'éclairer les modalités des interactions savoir-pouvoir au cœur de cette réflexion. For the ten-year (or so) anniversary edition of Justice Spatiale-Spatial Justice, and ten years after the founding conference entitled “Spatial Justice and Injustice” in 2008, we would like to open contradictory debates and discuss the concept of spatial justice.

Dessa forma, a fenomenologia busca estudar os fenômenos, tudo aquilo que constitui a nossa experiência, a partir da própria análise da maneira como eles aparecem a nós, havendo para isso uma preparação do olhar de quem estuda-que deve trabalhar em suspensão fenomenológica, ou estado de parênteses.. This paper analyses the French "classical" or "vidalian" school of geography's standpoint about the reality and its intelligibility. It aims to show how Vidal de la Blache's pupils thought of reality as something one has a direct access to, with no need of a mediation or representation. This idiosyncratic kind of realism is depicted as having two main goals: it has to show respect to the high "complexity" and richness of reality, and it has to replicate (in some ways) what reality is made of. Those views have massively shaped the epistemological and cognitive abilities and the literary results of the French classical paradigm of geography.

Cet article s'attache à montrer la posture de l'école française de géographie dite "classique" ou "vidalienne" concernant l'intelligibilité du réel. Il s'attache à montrer que celui-ci était, pour les élèves de Paul Vidal de la Blache, accessible sans solution de continuité, sans la médiation de représentations. Est alors interrogé ce réalisme visant non seulement à respecter mais même à restituer les "réalités géographiques". Ceci débouche sur de bien curieux stratagèmes d'écriture

Laura Peaud montre en quoi les deux contextes differents dans lesquels Humboldt mene ses recherches au Mexique et en Russie conduisent a des formes et des contenus scientifiques antagonistes et eclaire plus generalement la posture du naturaliste face au politique.

Au debut du xixe siecle, la geographie est en pleine construction disciplinaire. Parmi tant d'autres, une figure participe specialement a ce processus : Alexander von Humboldt. Un de ses principaux apports se trouve sans aucun doute dans son usage de l'image. Les images, et en particulier les cartes, ne sont jamais mobilisees comme de simples illustrations des savoirs geographiques qu'il produit, mais participent pleinement a son programme scientifique. Cela se traduit notamment par la realisation d'une nouvelle forme cartographique, qu'il nomme pasigraphie. Cet article vise a saisir en quoi l'usage des images dans l'œuvre de Humboldt participe a sa vision geographique du monde.

Cette communication s'inscrit dans la perspective plus large du spatial turn et du transnational turn, en s'appuyant notamment sur les travaux de D.N. Livingstone et C. Whiters. Elle vise à interroger le parcours d'une figure de la géographie du XIXe siècle, Alexander von Humboldt, en mobilisant une entrée spatiale. Celle-ci est envisagée comme complémentaire d'une approche internaliste, qui s'intéresse aux discours produits, et s'insère ainsi dans une perspective externaliste qui prend en charge le contexte social, historique et politique de production du savoir géographique. L'enjeu de cette communication est de montrer que l'entrée par les lieux, les réseaux, les circulations et tous les ressorts de la spatialité permettent de mieux saisir les enjeux épistémologiques des savoirs géographiques humboldtiens.

This paper is a course that I initiated during the 1990's and finalized for the French National Centre for Distance Education. It's focused on the uses of the notion of "system" in French human geography, especially since the 1970's. The first part is a presentation of the General System Theory (GST) and a discussion about causalities, designed for Students. It uses geographical examples.
The second part, "System theory and human geograhry", is focused on how French human geography took over the concept of system. It aims to show how heterogenous the works and thoughts under the label of system are, in spite of a common theoretical affirmation.
Finally, the paper developps a case study about the notorious Franck Auriac's Thesis, "Economic System and Space" (1979), about the Languedoc's vineyards in the south of France, treated as a socio-economic system.
