History of the Portuguese Empire

Portugal in the Sea of Oman - Religion and Politics is an editorial achievement, which is unique in the Arab World. In cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Oman, the University of Aachen and the Centro de Estudos Históricos (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), more than one thousand documents, ranging from 1504 to 1697, from the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (Lisbon), are published in a trilingual edition (original portuguese, translation into English and Arabic). Thus, invaluable primary sources are now available for scientists all over the world and a new scholarly dialogue about this essential period for the Arabian History can ensue.

O presente texto tem como propósito a intenção de procurar definir o que é um império
e que componentes são necessárias para se definir o mesmo.
Império extravasa o domínio político e entra na esfera da economia e da cultura, ou será
que sempre lá esteve? Torna-se muitas vezes problemático o instituto humano de fazer uma
historiografia seccionada e etiquetada. Todavia, cada vez mais vemos o cruzamento dos
círculos, bem como de várias ciências, a fim de conseguirmos ter um debate sério e
completo. Hoje, falamos abertamente dos impérios económicos, dizemos tal coisa por
termos a ideia de algo volumoso, gigantesco e/ou megalómano, todavia veremos neste texto
que em alguns casos a dimensão geográfica não é tão importante, ou que não é algo
categórico.

Este trabalho reúne documentação de natureza epistolar que originalmente publiquei, de forma separada, in Mare Liberum. Revista de História dos Mares  (números 4 e 17, respetivamente de 1992 e 1999). Trata-se de textos constantes dos espólios dos dois historiadores e escritores que os assinam, que se conservam no Arquivo de Cultura Contemporânea Portuguesa  da atualmente designada Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, em Lisboa. Conto divulgar, talvez muito proximamente, por este meio (Academia.edu), não só o conjunto dos documentos já por mim publicados em edições tipografadas pertinentes à marcante obra historiográfica coletiva que foi a História da Colonização Portuguesa do Brasil, editada há quase cem anos, como dezenas de outros textos que selecionei, compilei e transcrevi, baseado no exame dos mesmos dois espólios ---- e que correspondem, praticamente, à totalidade dos neles incluídos que à H. da C. P. do B. dizem respeito, visto que, sobretudo, o vastíssimo e fundamental espólio de Malheiro Dias foi alvo de uma quase exaustiva investigação da minha parte.

A Constituição Política da Monarquia Espanhola, de 19 de março de 1812, seria conhecida na Espanha como a Constituição de Cádiz. Sua elaboração precoce fez da Espanha um dos primeiros países do mundo a ter sua Constituição escrita. Ela foi o resultado da luta organizada pela sociedade espanhola contra o Imperador Bonaparte e se tornaria o bastião do liberalismo durante a década de 1820 em todo o Ocidente, influenciando países europeus e americanos que lutavam pelo constitucionalismo e a limitação da monarquia. A França, longa aliada, havia coagido a dinastia reinante a entregar a coroa em 1808. A resposta da população foi a resistência organizada. O invasor estrangeiro seria recebido por uma população pronta para o enfrentamento – que resultaria, inclusive, na primeira derrota de Bonaparte em terra –, e por uma elite preparada para organizar um movimento político que culminaria no texto constitucional.
Influenciada pelas experiências francesas e americanas, a Constituição de Cádiz foi um texto liberal. Suas normas estabeleciam a democracia representativa por meio de um sufrágio de quatro graus. Ao contrário das tendências da época, poucos requisitos existiam quanto a rendas ou propriedades. Os espanhóis escolheriam seus representantes, e a eleição seria feita com mais liberdade do que as constituições antecedentes haviam permitido.
A influência sobre a Constituição, no entanto, não foi só a da ruptura e da separação em busca da liberdade. A Constituição de Cádiz também foi marcada pela experiência inglesa, pelo desejo de manter instituições estáveis, respeitando a história e a tradição. Não é por acaso que o seu preâmbulo enuncia que as cortes estavam restabelecendo as antigas leis fundamentais da monarquia, acompanhadas das mudanças oportunas – alterações muito amplas, influenciadas pelo liberalismo. Não seria esquecido o respeito às leis medievais e às tradições do povo. A norma não foi uma simples reação ao sistema anterior, não negaria as suas instituições históricas. Como proferiram os deputados espanhóis, havia séculos as antigas leis já eram a Constituição da Espanha, que agora seria escrita e modificada para atender às necessidades contemporâneas.
Sob os auspícios das ideias dessas três influências – invasão estrangeira, liberalismo francês e respeito ao passado – se reuniriam os deputados, cerca de trezentos. Quase um terço desse grupo era de membros do clero. Os advogados e os servidores públicos formavam um grupo de cerca de cinquenta membros cada, e os militares eram quase quarenta. Os demais grupos sociais eram fracamente representados. Os trabalhos foram conturbados. As discussões envolviam os principais temas do liberalismo, que precisavam ser adaptados para a realidade da Espanha. A Constituição de Cádiz precisaria reger um país sitiado, que manteria o sistema monárquico, era muito religioso, temia um caos como o criado pela Revolução Francesa e, no entanto, almejava criar uma das normas mais liberais e democráticas do seu tempo.
O produto dos trabalhos foi o estabelecimento de uma monarquia constitucional moderada, amplamente limitada pelo principal órgão de representação – as cortes. Esse legislativo, por sua vez, passaria a ser o centro de emanação das leis e das principais decisões da Espanha. Uma profunda igualdade entre os espanhóis foi estabelecida, e apesar de tantos membros do clero, a Igreja perdeu quase todos os seus privilégios, ao lado das demais classes distinguidas anteriormente. Muitos foram os avanços: a liberdade de imprensa, o fim dos tormentos, os direitos individuais à liberdade e à educação, a jurisdição unificada no Estado, o fim das corporações de ofício, a igualdade entre americanos e europeus, a representação proporcional à população, e por fim, a submissão igualitária de todos à Constituição e à lei.
Com a queda de Napoleão em 1814 e a formação da Santa Aliança, a restauração da monarquia teria lugar em toda a Europa, e também na Espanha. A Constituição de Cádiz cairia apenas dois anos depois de viger, com a volta do rei destituído. Os reis voltavam à política com poderes semelhantes aos do passado. Devido à guerra e ao curto período de vigência, especialistas afirmam terem existido poucos efeitos concretos das normas gaditanas sobre a sociedade nesses primeiros dois anos.
A história da norma espanhola não seria tão lembrada se tivesse vigido apenas esses dois anos iniciais. Através da vontade popular e do exército, a Constituição seria reposta em vigência para o chamado Triênio Liberal, entre 1820 e 1823. Nesse período a inspiração foi grande para todo o mundo ocidental: ela era a mais influente Constituição liberal vigendo na Europa. Os outros países haviam voltado a ser governados por monarcas centralizadores do poder político. O liberalismo que restava havia sido restringido na Europa. Na França, governava novamente um Bourbon, apesar das limitações impostas. Por sua história de criação e por ser um bastião de resistência liberal durante a restauração, o texto espanhol foi, então, admirado por outros revolucionários que buscavam os mesmos ideais. A Constituição de Cádiz, a partir desse momento, se tornaria um estandarte de liberdade e fonte de inspiração na busca por igualdade. Na Itália e em Portugal, ela seria mais do que um farol, seria proclamada Constituição, e foi fonte de influência profunda no início das vidas constitucionais desses países.
A influência da Constituição de Cádiz no Brasil foi motivada pela sua importância para o liberalismo durante o Triênio Liberal (1820 a 1823) – coincidente com os anos da independência e da elaboração da primeira Constituição no Brasil (1822 a 1824). A importância do texto espanhol para a história de Portugal e a Revolução de 1820 também foram fatores para que o texto fosse relevante nas origens da independência brasileira. Enquanto a ligação do Brasil com Portugal era forte, a enorme influência espanhola sobre os portugueses gerou efeitos também no Brasil.
Apesar da sua documentada história de influências sobre diversas nações ocidentais europeias e americanas, a Constituição de Cádiz é pouco estudada nos seus efeitos sobre a América Portuguesa. Esta é inspiração do presente trabalho: conhecer as normas liberais espanholas e analisar a extensão da sua influência sobre o Brasil. No primeiro capítulo é feito o estudo do contexto e do teor da Constituição de Cádiz. O escopo é apresentar de maneira sistemática todo o texto da Constituição – com seus trezentos e oitenta e quatro artigos, sendo os mais importantes transcritos nas referências para facilitar a consulta.
O método principal é a pesquisa qualitativa em fontes primárias históricas e em normas. Ao lado das fontes primárias, o acesso aos doutrinadores de Direito Constitucional e História do Direito são utilizados para contextualizar o ambiente e verificar os efeitos jurídicos sobre a norma na Europa.

This article focuses on regionalist voluntary associations in the former Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique during the twentieth century, relating them to the issues of social capital and plurality of identity, and linking them to the context of the Portuguese Diaspora. It studies the contribution made by associations based on regional ties in an imperial and ultranationalist space, and analyzes how that same contribution not only strengthened the social capital in their communities, but also upheld identities, which were less closed and more plural, despite the prevailing action of colonialism. Furthermore, the work of these popular institutions made it possible to enlarge the geographic and social contexts of regionalism, a Western phenomenon that has been re-assessed by scholars over the last few decades.

Este artigo propõe um olhar cruzado sobre o associativismo regionalista nas ex-colónias de Angola e Moçambique, relacionando-o com as problemáticas do capital social e das identidades plurais e articulando-o com o contexto diaspórico.
Analisa o contributo das associações que assumiram um vínculo regional num espaço imperial de sobrecarga nacionalista e o modo como esse mesmo contributo permitiu não só o reforço do capital social nas suas comunidades como a afirmação de identidades menos fechadas e mais plurais, apesar do colonialismo actuante.
Além disso, o labor destas organizações populares tornou possível o alargamento dos contextos geográficos e sociais do regionalismo, um fenómeno do mundo ocidental que teve, nas últimas décadas, uma redobrada atenção por parte da academia.

This article analyses how the Portuguese overseas empire was integrated into the global politics of the Catholic Monarchy. By studying the conflict of Ormuz in the period between 1600 and 1625 and by seeking parallels with other conflicts scattered throughout the different regions of the empire, it seeks to demonstrate that the evolution of the Portuguese overseas territories during the Iberian Union largely depended on the geopolitical priorities of Castile, something which contradicts the thesis of Portuguese political autonomy that historiography has long defended.

The article analyzes the reign of the King Manuel I of Portugal (1495–1521), during which the long-standing Portuguese effort to find a sea route to India culminated, Subsequently, the Portuguese power in India was established. Then, the Portuguese influence in Asia spread as far as to China and the Maluku Islands. At the same time, the Portuguese sailors explored the east coast of Africa. The first Portuguese also set foot in Brazil. However, the text also deals with the development of the Portuguese expansion in Morocco and Congo, which are areas that sometimes remain in the shadow of the Orient. Finally, it describes Manuel's centralization of power in Portugal itself and the self-presentation of his court.

In this chapter we propose to discuss the strategies deployed by Portugal, a peripheral country in nineteenth and twentieth century Europe, to use its African Empire as a token for asserting its position in the European arena. Beyond diplomatic and political demarches, technology—and particularly the building of railways—was at the core of the Portuguese imperial agenda, determining the way African territories were immersed in the global market. Engineers played a central role in this process by discussing and eventually deciding the layout of the railway lines that were at the core of new anthropogenic landscapes, thus establishing an economic hierarchy among geographical spaces not only within the colonies, but also in a worldwide context. We will use two case studies, one in Angola and one in Mozambique, to argue that technological choices in the colonies were strongly pervaded by political and economic European agendas.

Inevitavelmente a revisitação poética de Macau implicaria para Fernanda Dias a confrontação com a memória do Império a que a aventura marítima portuguesa das Descobertas conduziu, com os resquícios do passado colonial que o espaço e as suas vivências transportam consigo. Também na sua “aventura colonial” ela se destaca, pela inteireza da sua entrega e fidelidade à sua musa. A integridade da sua demanda poética só podia desdobrar-se na integridade complexa do seu culto/canto à Macau que revisita;  por sua vez, esta implica, por um lado, o que designei como adentramento invulgar na cultura e civilização eleitas, e, por outro lado,  o confronto com o Império português, com os seus mitos, os seus resíduos tangíveis e intangíveis.

The conquest of Melaka by Afonso de Albuquerque was a feat of arms celebrated by poets and chroniclers and traditionally referred to as a major achievement in the settlement of Portuguese Estado da Índia. However, some questions may be raised concerning its real significance: the decision of taking the city by force and its possible misjudgement; how Melaka was far from Goa and the main centres of Portuguese presence in Asia and completely depended upon local conditions; the strategies developed by the Portuguese that allowed the city to survive in a potentially hostile environment and, finally, the arrival of the Dutch in Southeast Asian waters and the collapse of Melaka’s former position.

第一巻ではそれぞれ、（１）近世大名の社会資本としての豪華絵巻、（２）町人階級の娯楽としての古浄瑠璃、（３）徳川幕府の式楽としての能を、『相模川』という幸若末流の語り物の三バージョンを通して、三章で追究します。第二巻では、第一巻で取り上げた「純日本文学」を比例として、バチカン文庫所蔵のバレト写本より三編を取り上げ、また三章でそれぞれ分析します。まず（４）西・日・葡・伊、諸国語による諸本の伝存する、日本を舞台とした奇跡譚を扱い、予言と成就の順番の整理過程が覗えることから日本語版がもっとも早い詞章を残していることを論証し、イエズス会副管区長コエリョによる奥書から、秀吉の破天連追放令に対するコエリョの九州侵略作戦を支えるための日本向けのプロパガンダとして書かれたということを明らかにします。次に（５）『イエス・キリストのご受難物語』を中心に、幸若舞などの語り物文芸との語誌、常套句、テーマ上の共通点から、語り物文芸のもう一つの末流であることを証明します。最後に（６）『受難道具問答』を中心に、聖母マリアがイエスに対して身内敬語を用いる模様を論じます。なお、神学的解説文では、受身動詞の主語を「—より」で示し、受身の助動詞には「る・らる」ではなく「給ふ」を使うという独特のあり方がイエズス会の羅日動詞活用表にちょうど合致することから、漢文訓読の類似解読法として「羅文訓読」が形成しつつあったということを指摘します。

This dissertation is a transversal study of changes undergone by the kōwaka ballad during Japan’s transition from the middle ages of civil war, free exchange with Asia, and European contact, to the orderly domestic and foreign relations of the Edo period. As the kōwaka, which in the sixteenth century had rivaled the noh theatre for warrior patronage, began to change medium, format, and sociopolitical context in the seventeenth century, the traditional view is that it “quickly deteriorated once the samurai began turning to urban fads and foppery.” (Araki 1964) However, my materials tell a different story. Each chapter grows from my transcription, edition, and translation of a previously-undiscussed artifact. An illustrated handscroll of a latter-day ballad in Princeton’s library shows how that format was used for political commentary by Kyoto book craftspeople and their warrior-bureaucrat patrons in the time of Edo’s ascendancy. A libretto held in Paris adapts the same ballad to the early puppet theatre, this time making the main characters female and intensifying the melodramatic sentiment that appealed to the urban commoner class created by Kyoto’s new monetized economy. A noh play extant in three libretti in Tokyo rewrites the same story as an unproblematic paean to shogunal authority, while nevertheless displaying a critical consciousness of the working of ideology. In Volume Two, I introduce three pieces of Jesuit missionary literature in Japanese from a 1591 manuscript in the Vatican Library, whose vocabulary and formulae borrow heavily from the kōwaka. A miracle story set in Japan bears a colophon suggesting its function as a polemic against Hideyoshi’s expulsion edict. A ballad of The Passion of the Christ displays Japanese Jesuit appropriation of kōwaka discourse in its most developed extant form. A devotional meditation on the Instruments of the Passion grapples with a poetic paradox created by the role of honorifics in Japanese, while a theological postscript is rendered in a formulaic, Luso-Japanese discourse created on analogy with Sino-Japanese. Together, these new texts reveal not the kōwaka’s death but its diffusion and renewal along many cultural trajectories during Japan’s transition to early modernity.

The study examined the Benin – Portuguese Relations: Ughoton as a Benin Port (1485 – 1506). It further examined the coming of the Portuguese through the Benin port, Ughoton to Benin City. It also analyzed the articles of trade to Ughoton. It accounted for the factors responsible for the decline of Portuguese trade in Benin and Ughoton and the significance of the relationship to Benin and Ughoton.

The study relied on both oral interviews and documentary data. The oral data were based on unstructured interviews with the Odionwere (Oldest man in Ughoton), Ohen –Okun (The Chief Priest of Olokun temple) and other elders in Ughoton. The documentary data were sourced from intelligence reports, divisional reports, colonial letters, dispatches, government reports and correspondences. The data were subjected to internal and external criticisms for authentication and then to textual and contextual analyses. 
The study found that Prince Ekaladerhan, the only child of ogiso Owodo, the last Ogiso of Ogiso dynasty was the founder of Ughoton in about the eleventh century. The study also found that from the fifteenth century Ughoton was the port of Benin kingdom during the period of Benin Portuguese trade relations. The study demonstrated that this trade brought a lot of benefits to the people of Ughoton, Benin kings and the Europeans. It was discovered that, the trade declined due to bad climatic conditions, the Benin’s refusal to accept Christianity fully and that the trade did not bring the expected returns.

This paper studies how the annexation of Portugal by the Spanish Habsburgs between 1580 and 1640 impacted its military technology, and especially artillery. By focusing on the documentation from the Spanish artillery administration, it highlights the strategic role that Portugal, and especially Lisbon, came to play in the military organisation of the Spanish monarchy. Soon after the annexation, the royal Council of War in Madrid took over the leadership of artillery matters regarding Portugal and integrated it into the wide administrative network of the Habsburg monarchy. By entering the orbit of a state which, according to Parker, was a pioneer actor of the military revolution, Portugal gained new institutional structures and benefitted from a widely transnational circulation of knowledge and experts. The artillery personnel of Portugal soon included seasoned Castilian officers, Italian engineers, as well as gunners and gun-makers coming from the four corners of Europe, while some Portuguese technicians got involved in Spanish imperial dynamics, being sent to Cuba with the mission to create a new gun-foundry. The transfer of technology and knowledge was strengthen by the implementation of artillery lessons taught by Italian and Castilian masters, on the model of the schools of the gunners that the Spanish monarchy opened in other artillery hubs such as Milan, Palermo, Burgos and Seville.

In 1959 Frantz Fanon met in Rome with Angolan writers related to the foundation of the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola). This essay will attempt to analyse the context and the implications this meeting was to have on the organization of the struggle for independence of the Portuguese colonies up to the end of 1961. At the same time, it will look at the theoretical developments fostered by this struggle and the immense practical difficulties encountered by the anticolonial activists, given the extreme genocidal brutality of Portuguese imperialism.
