Innerbiblical Interpretation

Die assyrische Belagerung Jerusalems gehört zu den entscheidenden historischen Ereignissen in der Geschichte des Alten Israels. Die Erinnerung daran wurde in der biblischen und ausserbiblischen Literatur entsprechend oft bewahrt. Allein in der Hebräischen Bibel wurden die Geschehnisse sowohl im Jesajabuch wie in den Königebüchern als auch in den Chronikbüchern aufgenommen und sind forschungsgeschichtlich als die sogenannten Hiskija-Jesaja-Erzählungen bekannt geworden.
Die mit dem Jahrespreis 2019 der Universität Zürich ausgezeichnete Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Klärung der Literatur-, Theologie- und Religionsgeschichte der Hiskija-Jesaja-Erzählungen. Da zwischen den Hiskija-Jesaja-Erzählungen und anderen Texten in den Vorderen und Hinteren Propheten auffällig viele Verbindungen bestehen, wird der Textbereich Jesaja 36–39 / 2. Könige 18–20 im Horizont der innerbiblischen Exegese interpretiert. Überdies belegen die Hiskija-Jesaja-Erzählungen Inhalte, die für die Entwicklung des biblischen Monotheismus wichtige Wegmarken darstellen. So bringt dieses Buch zugleich neue Perspektiven für die gegenwärtige Monotheismusdebatte ein.

Around the turn of the eras, the dominating view of what a prophet should be is a penitential preacher. This image can scarcely be derived from the „critical potential“ (Nissinen) of Ancient Near East prophecy but rather stems from prophetic-theological reflexion in the context of the Old Testament writings. From the point of view of a prophecy of doom, penitential preaching retrospectively serves to substantiate the people’s guilt. From the perspective of a prophecy of salvation it is prospectively parenetic. Finally, in the Book of Jonah even the absolute announcement of destruction in fact appears to be an appeal to repentance.

The purpose of this paper was to re-examine the question of dependence between the Song of Moses (SM) and the Asaph Psalms (APss). Our own studies led to the assumption: The SM (Deut 32) is an essential reference text of the APss (50; 53–83). Eckart Otto, on the other hand, came to the conclusion: The SM is not the starting point and reference text for the APss, but rather it draws on them—in conjunction with other psalms and prophetic texts—and is in this respect a final text. The study presented here examined both views on the basis of detailed comparisons between the SM and six of the twelve APss (50; 74; 77–79; 81). The main focus was on the question of whether an intended dependence can be sufficiently plausibilised on the basis of the textual indications, and—if this is the case—on the determination of the direction of dependence (relative literary-historical chronology).
As a result of this study, there is a fairly high probability for the dependency vector SM → APss. In this respect, a relative chronology has been established without any dating or further conclusions being drawn concerning the comparative texts.Apart from questions of historical dependence, the biblical-canonical embedding and reading direction has its own weight: The SM is given as a prophetically-hortatory word for Israel’s time in the land, and in this respect the sequential reading direction SM → APss is legitimised in any case.

Die Erzählungen über die Einsetzung der Aaroniden ins Priesteramt in Lev 8-10 sind ein wichtiger Dreh-und Angelpunkt in der Diskussion um das Ende und den Umfang der Priesterschrift und die diachrone Schichtung der sekundär-und nachpriesterlichen Texte. Meike J. Röhrig fragt in der vorliegenden Studie nach der Verortung der Erzählungen in Lev 8-10 in der literarhistorischen »Stratigraphie« der hinteren Sinaiperikope und zeichnet nach, wie sich hier in mehreren Schüben sekundärpriesterliche Fortschreibungen aneinandergereiht haben, die teilweise in einer »schriftgelehrten« bzw. auslegenden Beziehung zu ihrem unmittelbaren priester(schrift)lichen Nahkontext stehen. Zugleich leistet die Autorin einen Beitrag zur Schärfung des Begri s der »innerbiblischen Schriftauslegung« und seiner Eingrenzung innerhalb der Fülle redaktionsgeschichtlich beschreibbarer Textentstehungsprozesse.

This book focuses on the way the biblical writers used allusive soundplay to construct theological discourse, that is, in service of their efforts to describe the nature of God and God's relationship to humanity. By showing that a variety of biblical books contain examples of allusive soundplay employed for this purpose, Kline demonstrates that this literary device played an important role in the growth of the biblical text as a whole and in the development of ancient Israelite and early Jewish theological traditions.
