Jacopo Tintoretto

Jacopo Tintoretto (1519 ca.-1594) dominated Venetian painting during the second half of the sixteenth century through a unique combination of talent, ambition, energy and imagination. Unlike other great painters of Renaissance Venice, Tintoretto was born in the city and worked there for his entire career. More than any other artist he left his mark on Venice, and his paintings are still found in every one of its neighborhoods. The present book is therefore a catalogue of all his important paintings on public view in the city. Divided by sections corresponding to the Venetian "sestieri", or districts, the volume covers over 120 paintings, including many that have recently received conservation treatment. Entries written by an international team of art historian provide up-to-date information on each picture, covering issues of style, patronage, dating, iconography, conservation, and elation to Tintoretto's oeuvre as a whole.

Le numerose esposizioni delle opere del maestro organizzate a Venezia ed in varie città del mondo: Colonia, Parigi, Washington, ecc. durante il biennio (la data esatta della nascita: 1518 o 1519, è infatti incerta) ed il vasto interesse suscitato dalla produzione pittorica dell'artista hanno infatti favorito gli studi e le ricerche, anche innovativi. Per tale ragione si è creduto opportuno fare, pur provvisoriamente, il punto su Tintoretto, esponente rappresentativo della transizione tra il Rinascimento e il Barocco, chiamando a raccolta gli esperti che maggiormente si sono dedicati ad approfondire interdisciplinarmente la sua opera ed il suo messaggio. La sede non poteva che essere la città di Venezia che ospita ancora oggi gran parte della sua produzione ed in particolare la Scuola Grande di San Rocco che conserva il fondamentale ciclo figurativo sul Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento. Over the past twenty years or so it has finally been understood that Jacopo Tintoretto (1518/19-1594) is an old master of the very highest calibre, whose sharp visual intelligence and brilliant oil technique provides a match for any painter of any time. Based on papers given at a conference held at Keble College, Oxford, to mark the quincentenary of Tintoretto’s birth, this volume comprises ten new essays written by an international range of scholars that open many fresh perspectives on this remarkable Venetian painter. Reflecting current ‘hot spots’ in Tintoretto studies, and suggesting fruitful avenues for future research, chapters explore aspects of the artist’s professional and social identity; his graphic oeuvre and workshop practice; his secular and sacred works in their cultural context; and the emergent artistic personality of his painter-son Domenico. Building upon the opening-up of the Tintoretto phenomenon to less fixed or partial viewpoints in recent years, this volume reveals the great master’s painting practice as excitingly experimental, dynamic, open-ended, and original.

tintoretto and architecture Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594) took an interest in architecture right from his formative years in a particularly lively period for Venetian painting, updated by exciting new Mannerist ideas introduced by Central Italian artists and writers who stayed in the city. Promoted by the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, this book has been published to mark the fifth centenary of Tintoretto's Birth (2019). Its purpose is to explore some highly promising histori­ ographical strands: the relationship between painted space in Tintoretto's paintings and actual physical space; the role of archi­ tecture in shaping composition and its influence on narrative as­ pects; and the original relationship between the painting and the viewer in the various contexts in which the works were placed (ecclesiastical and confraternal settings or public buildings). The different kinds of scholars involved and the exchanges be­ tween the various disciplines were the necessary condition for a systematic investigation into a subject that is inherently interdis­ ciplinary. The book thus brought together historians of architec­ ture, art historians and experts in the history of architectural and urban representation. marsel grosso is a research fellow in the Department of Cul­ tural Heritage at the University of Padua, where he is conducting a project on "Francesco Sansovino and the Arts". He has often dealt with Venetian Cinquecento painting, and especially Titian and his critical fortune in southern Italy. His interests also in­ clude Vasari, Battista Franco and Tintoretto in the significant period in the mid­sixteenth century when Tintoretto is known to have frequented contemporary writers (Aretino, Calmo and Doni). Specialised in the Venetian architec­ tural context from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, he has dealt with the subject in several publications, such as "Una giogia ligata in piombo". Il volume raccoglie i contributi di diversi studiosi, afferenti a varie discipline, con l’intento di offrire un aggiornamento alla ricerca sul territorio, determinante nella salvaguardia, nella divulgazione e nella valorizzazione dei beni archeologici, artistici, storici e etnoantropologici locali. L’area di indagine è, nella sua globalità, il Sebino, con le sponde bresciana e bergamasca, la Franciacorta e la Valcamonica. Gli studi, perlopiù inediti, offrono novità negli ambiti della storia economico-sociale, oplologia, letteratura, storia dell’arte, archeologia di epoca storica, etnoantropologia, architettura e archivistica. Le ricerche sono promosse da varie istituzioni rappresentative del territorio indagato con lo scopo di divulgare e stimolare nuovi percorsi di studio. La pubblicazione è dedicata a don Romolo Putelli, il pioniere degli studi camuni e della tutela del patrimonio artistico e documentario, a cui va il merito di aver salvato e conservato reperti archeologici, oggetti d’arte ed etnografici, fondi documentari e librari che oggi costituiscono il CaMus di Breno, la prima istituzione museale fondata in Valcamonica.
