Lieux de memoire

Introduction:
This paper seeks to address the following questions: Can we establish that meaningful relationships existed between some Gallo-Roman sanctuaries and the Iron Age lieux de mémoire (‘places of memory’) over which they were founded if the sites experienced periods of abandonment? If so, could we then view their histories as continuous? Previously, scholars have allowed continuity of place in these cases, but generally denied that any substantive relationship existed between the two epochs. Further, the modern definition of continuity does not allow sites with significant interruptions of occupation or activity to be described as having a ‘continuous’ history. However, in this paper, I will propose that we consider continuity differently. I believe that continuity may also be demonstrated by the enduring significance that places of memory possessed for local communities, a significance that attracted the foundation of new central places, and could be appropriated at sites’ reoccupation. Through the appropriation of places of memory, newly founded central places were linked to past epochs of sites’ histories, and granted legitimacy to define contemporary identities by their antiquity.
In order to present this alternative notion of continuity, I will outline a theoretical framework that uses the concepts of central places and lieux de mémoire to model the progression of sites from their initial states, through their periods of abandonment, and into their later histories. I believe that by reconsidering continuity within the framework of these concepts, we will gain a better understanding of how these sites were perceived and experienced in antiquity, and may wish to revise how we define continuity to better suit ancient perspectives.
The initial section of this paper will be devoted to the theoretical aspects of the topic. It will define places of memory and central places, and present the theoretical framework. The second section will illustrate the theoretical considerations using the case study of Ribemont-sur-Ancre, the well-known Gallo-Roman sanctuary founded upon a place of memory from the La Tène B2/C1 period (late third century B.C.). The case study will address: the creation of the place of memory at Ribemont, and the activity of its initial epoch; what it came to mean to the local community over its period of abandonment; and how the site’s significance was appropriated at the foundation of the Gallo-Roman sanctuary in the early Roman period. Discussion of Ribemont will conclude with an illustration of how the site’s history may be modelled using the study’s theoretical framework, and brief summary of the sanctuary’s subsequent development. The final section of the paper before the conclusion will briefly address three comparative examples – Gournay-sur-Aronde, Nitry, and Mirebeau-sur-Bèze – to illustrate how the theoretical framework may be applied to other sanctuaries for future studies.
While addressing only one case study in detail in this paper, I believe that the framework presented here may be applied to many other Gallo-Roman sanctuaries founded upon places of memory in Gaul and Britain. Hopefully, the parallels and interactions between the concepts of lieux de mémoire and central places discussed here will encourage further integration of the concepts in future considerations.

À travers la lecture du catalogue de l’exposition « La splendeur des Camondo », j’ai remarqué que les dernières fiches de signalisation du camp d’internement de Drancy (p.107, cat 238 - après 1942) portaient la mention d’une adresse de logement à Pau (14 boulevard des Pyrénées div. 2 E) Léon et Bertrand Reinach. Très intéressé par la vie des Camondo et m’apercevant en lisant divers ouvrages sur la saga familiale que les derniers des Camondo ont résidé à Pau - ville où j’enseigne la géographie à l’université en tant qu’ATER [à l’époque]- je me suis permis de faire un reportage photographique sur la dernière demeure des Camondo (lignée) au numéro 14 boulevard des Pyrénées. Entre mémoire, histoire, oubli et redécouverte, la mémoire des Camondo refait jour par petit bout. L’enquête de terrain donna lieu à un archivage de l’Institut Nissim de Camondo. -- Through reading the catalog of the exhibition "The splendor of the Camondo", I noticed that the last signs of the Drancy internment camp (p.107, cat 238 - after 1942) An address of accommodation in Pau (14 boulevard des Pyrénées div. 2 E) Léon and Bertrand Reinach. Very interested in the life of the Camondo and seeing me reading various books on the family saga that the last of the Camondo resided in Pau - ville where I teach geography at the university as ATER [at the time ] - I allowed myself to make a photographic report on the last home of the Camondo (lineage) at number 14 boulevard des Pyrénées. Between memory, history, oblivion and rediscovery, the memory of Camondo remakes day by bit. The field survey resulted in an archive of the Nissim Institute of Camondo.

Az 1930-as évek elején, az Alföldön egy családi perpatvar alkalmával az intézkedő csendőrök olyan fe-nyegetésekről értesültek, ami miatt eljárást indítottak egy tíz évvel korábban történt öngyilkosság ügyében. Kiderült, hogy az első világháború után egy magát Pipás Pistának nevező, férfiként élő nő akasztott fel olyan férfiakat, akiktől saját családjuk kívánt megszabadulni. E bűnügyek révén arra keressük a választ, hogy a bűnnek van-e emlékezete, és amennyiben van, ez pontosan miben érhető tetten. Többféle – társadalmi, kulturális és kriminológiai – szempont figyelembevételével készült vizsgálatunk arra hívja föl a figyelmet, hogy Pipás egye-disége ellenére az ügy sok szempontból jól illusztrálja a korabeli női szerepváltozásokat is, amelyek során a nők nem csak azt sajátíthatták el, hogyan birkózzanak meg a férfiak relatív hiányával, de adott esetben át is vehet-ték a maszkulin szerepeket. A tanulmány az eredeti bűnügyi iratok, valamint korábbi interpretációk – köztük elsősorban Szabó László, egykori bűnügyi újságíró és Ember Judit, dokumentumfilm-rendező megközelítései – alapján a Pipáshoz kötődő gyilkosságsorozat emlékezetének felfejtésével a bűnemlékezet feltárásához kíván hozzájárulni.
By exploring the case of Pista Pipás, a female criminal who, after taking up a male identity, murdered a number of men by hanging them in the Hungarian countryside during the 1920s, this study examines the question whether there is a memory of crime, and if so how it could be accurately reconstructed. By analysing the social, cultural and criminological contexts of the case, this study argues that its uniqueness notwithstanding, the Pipás affair in many ways better epitomized the changes female criminality underwent in the wake of the war during which women not only learned to cope with the relative absence of men, but were also often compelled to take over roles that were previously considered to be exclusively masculine. This text seeks to reveal the different levels of the memory of crime on the basis of criminal records, and other accounts, including the interpretations of László Szabó, a former journalist and Judit Ember, a documentary film maker.

This article explores some French Canadian (Québec) students’ historical consciousness of the nation through the lens of Social Identity Theory (SIT). Informed by SIT principles, our narrative analysis shows how most Franco-Québécois categorize the past in homogenous categories (e.g., the imperialist Anglophone; the surviving Francophone) and frame their stories into particular modes of present-day orientations. Implications of this study for history education are also discussed.

Overalt i Spanien tilbagetrækkes gadenavne, monumenter og statuer, der på en eller anden måde hylder general Francisco Francos oprør og hans efterfølgende diktatur. Dette sker på baggrund af vedtagelsen af Ley de Memoria Histórica  i oktober 2007. Loven blev foreslået af premierminister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero fra PSOE , og den anerkender ofre fra begge sider af borgerkrigen og det frankistiske diktatur. Denne lov har fået stor omtale både i Spanien og i resten af Europa, hvor man i den danske presse har diskuteret, om spanierne nu er villige til at ruske op i deres sorte fortid.

Med en blodig borgerkrig og et næsten 40 års langt diktatur i bagagen, var grundsøjlerne for en fredelig overgang til demokrati stilhed og forglemmelsespagter. Med det måtte mange spaniere, frivilligt eller ufrivilligt, putte fortidens forbrydelser i glemmebogen. I 1990'erne opstod der en ny bevægelse, der nægtede at nøjes med den ’ene side af historien’ og som krævede at få sandheden frem i lyset. Blandt disse forkæmpere finder vi den spanske undersøgelsesdommer Baltasar Garzón, der, med sin ’oprydning’ i tidligere diktaturstyrede lande som Chile, nu er gået i gang med Spanien. Han kræver massegrave åbnet, så de efterladte kan give deres afdøde en anstændig begravelse, samt at få stillet de skyldige til ansvar for deres blodsudgydelser. Modstanderne af Ley de Memoria Histórica er at finde i de fleste højreorienterede grupperinger. Det konservative parti PP  mener, at denne lov blot er et ensidigt forsøg på at omskrive historien og slette fortidens spor, fuldstændig som Franco forsøgte at gøre efter den 2. Republik. Et sted som mange højreorienterede frygter loven vil modificere, er Valle de los Caídos . Husende både Francos og Falangens grundlægger José Antonio Primo de Riveras grav, er denne dal selve indbegrebet af fascismen og krigens grusomheder. Men det er samtidig et hvilested for mange tusinde mennesker, både republikanere og nationalister. Ley de Memoria Histórica forbyder al politisk aktivitet og mindehøjtideligheder ved dalen, men der har længe været uvished omkring dens fremtid. Det diskuteres om monumentet skal gøres til et museum med en forsonet erindring til ære for alle de faldne i borgerkrigen, mens andre helt mener, at den kun skal have funktion som en almindelig kirke.

The Restoration of the Czech "Montsalvage". The Question of Karlštejn's Restoration in 60.-80. of the 19th Century
This study should present the way of perception of the castle Karlštejn in Czech milieu of the sixties and eighties in 19. century, in time of expressive public political and cultural emancipation of the Czech society. The castle is possible to present in wide context. In that time new political programm of the Czech land representation is created. One of their new political conception basic requirement was confirmation of historical rights of Czech Kingdom. A symbolical confirmation of Czech rights should have been the coronation of Austrian monarch by St. Wenceslaus crown. The sanctity of the crown that should be the most important in the ceremony was transferred to the castle which was meant to be built as a home for the Czech coronation jewelry.  But the bad condition of Karlštejn could not allow to take it as historical symbol of the Czech kingdom. The coronation and restoration of the castle could have been started at the end of eighties of 19th century, when there was a better political and economical situation. The project of the restoration made architect Friedrich Schmidt from Vienna. There was a fight about the ethnic origin of a founder or a builder of the castle during dealing about the castle restoration. We can find nationalist motives on both sides, the Czech a the German too. The perception of the castle Karlštejn in time before his restoration presents special symbolical meaning that has the castle in historical consciousness of a new forming society.

Historien om musik i Danmark – hvad vil det sige? Hvad har en stat eller en nation som Danmark med musikhistorien at gøre? Og hvad har historien om musik i Danmark med nutidige virkeligheder at gøre? Denne bogs svar på begge spørgsmål er, i korteste form: en hel del, men aldrig alt.

Musik og musikliv i Danmark har i perioder været påvirket af enevældige kongers temperamenter, af nationale institutioner, koloniale politikker, ideer om nord og syd, om dansk og udansk. Men musik er også en meget mobil kunstart uden den store respekt for landegrænser og aldrig kun en national størrelse.

Historien manifesterer sig i eftertid og nutid i form af både fysiske og mentale erindringssteder: af lurblæsere, Carl Nielsen og højskolesangbøger. Men der kommer også hele tiden nyt, andet og fremmed til. Og hvis historien former os, sker det omvendte også: Vi spiller gerne på historien som på et instrument, men melodien forandrer sig hele tiden.

Sono quelli in cui si sono consumati gli eventi e le battaglie poi entrati a pieno titolo nella narrazione pubblica attraverso la scuola e le poesie patriottiche, l'odonomastica, i monumenti, la pittura, le pubblicazioni ad uso edificante: Goito, Pastrengo, Curtatone e Montanara, Magenta, Solferino, San Martino, Calatafimi e così via. Nel caso delle più celebri insurrezioni popolari, specialmente quelle del 1848-49, il nesso spazio-tempo si fa dominante. Le Cinque giornate di Milano, l'8 agosto a Bologna, le Dieci giornate di Brescia sono gli esempi più conosciuti, unitamente alle vicende delle repubbliche di Venezia e di Roma. Writing this text, we meant to present an application of Pierre Nora's theory of the Places of Memory in the area of Public Sculpture and Public Art studies. We know that Public Sculpture and Public Art are two artistic disciplines that deal a lot with History, and count a lot too with Memory, presenting for their representations and uses a good example of the fusion between both, this way reaching and accomplishing one of Nora's theory main requisitions. Finally, our scope will be to propose and to discuss a classification model that might integrate both public sculpture and public art distinct logics, unifying their meanings from the point of view of the study of historical registrations and memorial remembrances.

El capítulo analiza el curso general que ha seguido el proceso social y político de preservación de los sitios de conciencia y memoria en Chile en el período comprendido entre 1990 y 2018, con énfasis en tres aspectos: la resignificación de los antiguos centros represivos de la dictadura cívico-militar (1973–1990), el rol y las principales características de la diversidad de lugares de memoria existentes y el desarrollo de propuestas educativas surgidas tanto del Estado como de los sitios de conciencia mismos para la enseñanza del pasado reciente.

L’objectif de ce travail est de problématiser le concept de centre clandestin de détention à partir de trois matériaux produits à des époques différentes et en provenance de champs distincts : le politico-institutionnel, le scientifi co-académique et le juridique. L’effort fourni pour encadrer théoriquement ce concept discursif nous amènera
à repenser ses frontières poreuses avec des catégories voisines telles que le camp de concentration et l’établissement pénitencier. Notre réfl exion se fonde sur une série de questions : en Argentine, qu’appelle-t-on un centre clandestin de détention ? Qu’est-ce qui le caractérise ? Quels critères fi xent ses limites ? Le lieu physique délimite-t-il son unité en tant que telle ou peut-on envisager l’existence d’un centre clandestin qui accepte, successivement dans le temps, plusieurs lieux géographiques ?

Posterior a la caída de la dictadura de Federico Tinoco Granados (1917-1919), la ciudadanía y el gobierno local de San José impulsaron una serie de políticas públicas para convertir ciertos sectores de la capital, en sitios de conmemoración de la resistencia contra la dictadura y sus héroes fallecidos. Sin embargo, la política del gobierno costarricense en los años posteriores, privilegió el olvido de la memoria de resistencia en pos de un discurso conciliatorio que trajera paz y fraternidad, a una sociedad dividida por la experiencia de la dictadura tinoquista. Uno de esos sitios conmemorativos fue la Calle 9 de la capital, conocida actualmente como el Barrio Chino. Esta ponencia, tiene el propósito de proponer una serie de estrategias de gestión y activación, desde el ámbito conceptual, para recuperar la memoria colectiva original de la Calle 9 que dio origen al Paseo de los Estudiantes como sitio de conmemoración.

"The purpose of the article is to analyse the phenomenon of “lieux de mémoire” in Eastern European football in 1945-1991 period and research its feautures basing on the case studies of Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Albania.

The article is composed of two integrally associated parts:
- The first introductory section attempts at describing the phenomenon of “sites of memory” and its links to football. The theoretical background contains Pierre Nora’s general idea of “sites of memory”, Maurice Halbwachs research on social frames of collective memory and, less, Frances Yates reflections on mnemotechnics. The author focuses on “sites of memory” connected to the issues of European football and on socio-political and cultural factors which they stem from. The main objectives of this part is to define and characterize the phenomenon of “football sites of memory” and create a basic typology of it. The author formulates and give grounds to hypothesis claiming that football symbols can be treated as “sites of memory”.
- The second section is a case study of important “sites of memory” in satellite/USSR-aligned Central-Eastern European countries during the 1945-1991 period. These examples are classified into four model categories on two different level. The first level is the integrity of the state – it gives categories of “integration” (internal strengthening of national/social/cultural community) and “decomposition” (breakdown of mentioned community). The second level is the attitude towards the communist regime – it gives categories of “adaptation” (acceptance of the non-democratic regime and subordination) and “resistance” (opposition against mentioned regime). These categories are useful to group selected case studies of “football sites of memory”:
-- Poland-USSR matches in 1957 (2:1, World Cup Qualification), 1972 (2:1, Olympic Games) and 1982 (0:0, World Cup) – “resistance”,
-- Germany winning the World Cup in 1990 – “integration”,
-- Czechoslovakia winning the European Championship in 1976 – “adaptation”,
-- The “Euroidiots” Bulgarian team Levski Sofia loss to Royal Antwerp in 1989 – “resistance”,
-- Riots after Romanian win over Denmark in World Cup Qualification match in 1989 starting the “Romanian Revolution” – “resistance”,
-- Hungarian “Golden Team” in 1953-1956 period –  “adaptation”,
-- Role of “Maksimir events” in 1989 for the decay of Yugoslavia – “decomposition”,
-- Albanian - West Germany 0:0 draw in 1967 – “adaptation” and “integration”.

Reflection on these issues verifies the hypothesis and opens a scientific discourse on the topic of “football sites of memory”. This part of the article is based on the main literature concerning the socio-political and cultural aspects of football in Eastern Bloc in 1945-1990 period."

Der Abschnitt „Aus der Geschichte der Medizin“ beginnt mit dem sehr bewegenden Text der Historikerin Oonagh Hayes Gedenken anstossen ? Warum am Gräberfeld X (der Opfer) gedacht wird. Die Autorin widmet sich der Gedenkpraxis, die sich aus der besonderen Geschichte des Gräberfeldes X, dem Bestattungsort des anatomischen Instituts der Universität Tübingen ergeben, in das zwischen 1933 und 1945 1077 Leichen von überwiegend aus politischen Gründen Hingerichteten eingeliefert wurden. Diese Gedenkpraxis war sehr lange von unglaublichen Verleugnungen geprägt, ehe die 1952 an der Stelle des Gräberfeldes errichteten drei steinernen Kreuze, 1963 durch eine Gedenktafel ergänzt, auf der auch die oft fehlerhaft geschriebenen Namen der Toten festgehalten wurden, 1990 würdig zu einer Grabstätte für die verbliebenen Überreste der seht inhomogenen Opfer umgewandelt wurde, aber erschütternderweise von einer Schändung mit Hakenkreuzen nicht verschont blieb. Die durch viele Verwerfungen charakterisierte Entstehungsgeschichte der Gedenkstätte wird in der sehr reflektierten Bewertung zu einem Teil des Gedenkprozesses mit einer „palimpsestartigen Überlagerung und Durchdringung von Spuren der eigenen Geschichte“.

LE MONASTÈRE DE POUTNA – LIEU DE MÉMOIRE
Le monastère de Poutna a été fondé par Étienne le Grand de Moldavie pour abritter les sépultures de sa famille. De nos jours, il y a encore à Poutna 12 dalles funéraires: celles d’Étienne le Grand, des ses épouses (Maria Assanina Paléologhina et Maria Voichiţa), des ses enfants (Bogdan et Petru, Bogdan III prince de Moldavie et Maria-Cneajna), de sa belle-fille (Maria, épouse du prince Petru Rareş), de son petit-fils (Ştefăniţă ou Étienne IV prince de Moldavie), de Iuga grand vistier (trésorier), du métropolite Teoctist Ier (m. 1478), du métropolite Iacov Putneanul (m. 1778) et des parents de celui-ci. Quelques-uns des tombeaux (ou peut-être tous) ont été couverts avec de somptueuses couvertures, dont une seulement présente le portrait du défunt, à
savoir celle de Maria Assanina Paléologhina. Cette broderie funéraire, dont la dégradation (Fig. 1-7) dénote une longue utilisation effective, a été conçue comme un veritable gisant, qualité identifiée par André Grabar; mais il y a encore quelque chose de plus. La princesse y est représentée sous une arcade, comme, parfois, les impératrices et les empereurs byzantins (Fig. 8-12) ou comme les saints (Fig. 13) – moyen artistique pour marquer la majestas deorum. Au fond, la broderie de Poutna est une expression de la conception médiévale sur „les deux corps du roi” (Ernst Kantorowicz) et l’immortalité du souverain. Le socle actuel du tombeau de la princesse Maria Assanina Paléologhina (Fig. 15) est, en réalité, un fragment de balustrade, pareille à celle de l’église de Bălineşti (département de Suceava) (Fig. 14). Peut-être, à l’époque d’Étienne le Grand, les socles des tombeaux de Poutna étaient peints comme ceux de l’église épiscopale de Rădăuţi, datant du même temps (Fig. 16 a, b): à Rădăuţi, la décoration des socles et celle des vêtements portés par les princes représentés dans le tableau votif (Fig. 17) se ressemblent beaucoup. Le tombeau d’Étienne le Grand est taillé en marbre; à l’époque, l’utilisation du marbre „se fait en référence à l’Empire [Byzantin], dont on veut s’affirmer soit le fidèle serviteur, soit le continuateur légitime” (Jean-Pierre Sodini). Évidemment, le tombeau en marbre du prince de Moldavie transmet un message dont la nature n’est pas esthétique, mais politique. Les chroniques moldaves attestent que la belle-mère d’Étienne le Grand, la princesse Maria Despina (épouse de Radu le Bel, prince de Valachie), a été elle aussi ensevelie à Poutna (1500), mais sa dalle funéraire n’existe plus dans ce couvent. En revanche, la couverture de celle-ci (conservée dans le trésor de Poutna) peut offrir des indices pour chercher l’endroit du tombeau disparu (Fig. 18). La couverture est usée, tachée et brûlée sur son côté droit (Fig. 19), ce qui signifie que le tombeau a été placé du côté droit de l’église, plus précisément du narthex. Les tombeaux du monastère de Poutna étaient abrités dans des enfeus peints avec les portraits funéraires des personnes ensevelies. Malheureusement, la reconstruction de l’église au XVIIe siècle les a anéantis. Une étude comparée avec le baldaquin de l’église d’Arbure (département de Suceava) (Fig. 21, 22), prouve que les
baldaquins de Poutna ne sont pas tardifs, mais contemporains des tombeaux. Ces baldaquins – successeurs des antiques ciboria – étaient peints à l’intérieur avec des scènes eschatologiques et funéraires et colorés à l’extérieur en rouge. On retrouve des restes des fresques seulement sous le baldaquin de Bogdan III (Fig. 23 a, b). Le tombeau d’Étienne le Grand a été aménagé du côté droit, autrement dit dans
la place d’honneur de l’église, suivant une règle attestée pour les tombeaux des rois serbes et des tsars bulgares, mais pas en Moldavie avant Étienne le Grand. Le monastère de Poutna – avec la tombe de Dragoş (le fondateur du pays de Moldavie), avec le sarcophage en marbre d’Étienne le Grand, avec les portraits funéraires (aujourd’hui disparus), avec le gisant brodé de la princesse Maria Assanina
Paléologhina, avec toutes les couvertures tombales, avec les armoiries de la dynastie sculptées au-dessus des tombes des fils d’Étienne – peut être consideré, pour la Moldavie, un veritable lieu de mémoire, à l’instar, pour d’autres espaces historiques, de la cathédrale de Palerme et de la cathédrale Saint-Denis.

For the 16th birthday of the hereditary prince Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach on 3 September 1773, his teacher Christoph Martin Wieland had the play "The Choice of Hercules", a "dramatic cantata", performed at the Weimar court theatre. Did Wieland thus connect to a tradition of the Hercules myth connected with the dynasty or the place "Weimar", or did he use the motif because its Europe-wide distribution made it a catchy and malleable material for his intended empire-wide impact? The article asks in which media and in which forms the Hercules motif had appeared in Weimar since the end of the Middle Ages, and how Weimar appropriated this European myth.

Zum 16. Geburtstag des Erbprinzen Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach am 3. September 1773 ließ sein Lehrer Christoph Martin Wieland im Weimarer Hoftheater das Stück "Die Wahl des Herkules", eine »dramatische Cantate«, aufführen. Konnte Wieland damit an eine mit der Dynastie oder dem Ort »Weimar« verbundene Tradition des Herkules-Mythos anknüpfen, oder bediente er sich des Motivs, weil es sich seiner europaweiten Verbreitung wegen als ein eingängiger und formbarer Stoff für seine reichsweite Wirkungsabsicht anbot? Der Beitrag fragt danach, in welchen Medien und in welchen Formen das Herkules-Motiv in Weimar seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters erscheint, und wie sich Weimar diesen europäischen Mythos aneignete.

Comment le passé est-il présent dans nos mémoires collectives? Quels sont nos héros et héroïnes? Quels sont nos mythes, nos «lieux de mémoire»? Cet ouvrage collectif analyse à l’aide de nombreux exemples les usages du passé dans le processus de construction nationale.

Le lecteur sera confronté à une démarche qui lui semblera à première vue déroutante: non pas une histoire nationale «traditionnelle» – la reconstitution des grands faits nationaux –, mais une histoire de la construction des représentations luxembourgeoises. Ce livre étudie donc des symboles (comme le Lion Rouge), des légendes (Mélusine), des mythes (la «grève générale» de 1942), des dates phares (1839) et des lieux de référence (les hauts-fourneaux de Belval).

El Valle de los Caídos es, en la actualidad, un tema que sigue suscitando interés, ya que, aparte de su carga simbólica y su capacidad de debate, aún hoy son desconocidos algunos detalles de su construcción, desde el número exacto de presos que participaron en los trabajos, hasta el número de accidentes que se produjeron. Con este trabajo de investigación hemos intentado esclarecer algunos de esos puntos que aún permanecen oscuros aportando nuevos datos y testimonios.

À partir d’une géographie de la mémoire, j’aborde les stratégies de planification urbaine en relation avec l’organisation, la tenue et le bilan des méga-événements. Leur souvenir, remémoration et manipulation par les élites locales rentrent dans une politique urbaine sur le long terme pour justifier parfois des choix hasardeux ou judicieux. J’aboutis à trois résultats corollaires de la forme, du fond et de la fonction des méga-événements à partir d’une recherche archivistique, d’une enquête de terrain sur les sites olympiques à Barcelone et d’une revue de littérature renouvelée sur le sujet : une complémentarité entre les Jeux olympiques et les Expositions universelles s’observe avec l’importance du palimpseste urbain fonctionnant comme un système intégrateur, une mémoire collective des méga-événements reste prégnante grâce au tourisme de masse et de niche, les qualités de l’éphémère de la manifestation se font ressentir dans la production matérielle et immatérielle forgeant une mémoire collective.

The memory of the mega-events as an instrument of urban planning

From a geography of memory, I discuss urban planning strategies related to the organization, conduct and review the mega events. Their memory, recollection and manipulation by local elites fall into an urban policy in the long term to justify sometimes bad or good choice. I end up with three corollaries results from the form, substance and function of mega-events from archival research, field research at Olympic venues in Barcelona and a review of literature on renewed topic: complementarity between Olympic Games and the World Exhibitions is observed with the importance of urban palimpsest functioning as a system integrator, a collective memory of mega-events remains pregnant with mass tourism and niche qualities transience of the event are felt in material and immaterial production forging a collective memory.

The geological divergence of the North American and Eurasian plates creates a geological border known as the mid-Atlantic ridge. The continual diverging forces and intense volcanic activity of the sub-oceanic ridge have given birth to the landmass we know as Iceland. Symbolically, the geographical emergence of Iceland is a direct result of the distancing of both the old and new worlds. Iceland and its people rest at the crossroads of two very different societies, making it hard to share a sense of belonging with either continent, despite the unifying forces of globalization. Iceland's unique history and geographical isolation have resulted in a weak sense of belonging with either the historically rich European or progressive North American continents, thus fostering a strong ethnic and nationalistic identity. In lieu, Iceland has formed and maintained its own unique identity with help of both continents, becoming a geographic and cultural halfway intersection between both. This strong cultural identity can be best observed at Pingvellir, a lieu de mémoire representing the history, struggle, and relentlessness of Iceland's thirst for an identity of its own. The ensuing discussion outlines this thirst and how it paved the micronation's development of a strong national identity resistant of global cultural hybridization.

Հետազոտության մեջ փորձ է արվում ընդհանուր գծերով և մի քանի հիմնական շեշտադրումներով վերլուծել Ֆրանսիայում Հայոց ցեղասպանության ժխտման քրեականացման օրինագծի վերաբերյալ Պիեռ Նոռայի հայեցակարգը: Այն դիտարկվում է հիշողության և պատմության նրա տեսության և ընդհանրապես պատմության և հիշողության վերաբերյալ տեսությունների համապատկերում: Քննարկվում է Նոռայի՝ Հայոց ցեղասպանությունն ու Հոլոքոստը հակադրելու միտումը: Ֆրանսիացի պատմագետն աննկատ կերպով աստիճանակարգում է երկու ցեղասպանությունները՝ օրենքով ամրագրման իրավունք վերապահելով հրեականին այն դեպքում, երբ հայությունը 1915 թվականին ենթարկվել է ոչ միայն ու պարզապես Ցեղասպանության, այլև հայրենազրկման:

This research is an attempt of analyzing Pierre Nora’s concept of the locations of memory with a major emphasis on the debate on criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide in France. It is viewed, on the one hand, within the system of theories on history and memory in general, and on the other hand, Nora’s theory of memory and history in particular. The author discusses the French historian’s tendency to oppose the Armenian Genocide to the Holocaust. Unnoticeably, Nora hierarchizes the two genocides, reserving the right to be fixed by law only for the Holocaust, whereas in 1915 the Armenians not only suffered massacre but also lost their land.

Una de las principales finalidades de la arquitectura radica en la búsqueda de un LUGAR donde el ser humano
pueda habitar.
Lugar como centro y trasfondo donde discurre la vida, donde ser. Así, surge el cuestionamiento acerca de la
significación y la importancia de la noción de lugar y su relación con la arquitectura, que se presenta a través
de un diálogo entre diversos autores de diferentes disciplinas como la filosofía, la antropología, la literatura y la
arquitectura.
Lugares que se podrían definir como envolvencias donde confluye lo que envuelve y lo envuelto, donde el ser
humano es el centro, abiertos a recibir, cuyos límites permanecen en equilibrio en una relación profunda con
su genius loci, caracterizados por una singular identidad que los hacen únicos e inexplicablemente maravillosos.
Lugar y arquitectura que se anudan en distintos conceptos, siendo capaces de cobijar la coexistencia del
tiempo asentado en espacio, adquiriendo una permanencia que consigue otorgar reposo a lo pasajero, donde el
ser humano tiene la posibilidad de habitar el presente dotándolo de una identidad que lo convierten en único y
especial, rozando la totalidad, cuya resonancia traspasa los límites físicos impregnado el cuerpo y el alma, la
percepción y la memoria.

In light of Cassey's statement that place is the most fundamental form of embodied experience and the site of powerful fusion of self/body, space and time (1996: 9), I have analysed his phenomenological account of place, site and space through the concepts of place of memory („lieux de memoire” – Pierre Nora 1999), non-place (Auge 1992) and nostalgia (Boym 2001). Thus I connected the concept of place with the notion of home which is typically idealized as a topographic wholeness in which the allienated self seeks comfort. Nostalgia will be analysed here in terms of belonging and longing for a home that no longer exists or has never existed. When a topos incites a sense of belonging, it is possibly a „home” profusing in places of memory (Nora 1999). When it does not arouse a sense of belonging, it might be a non-place (Auge), a mere site of transience in which our body seems displaced. For illustration, I have chosen Tarkovsky's movie „Nostalghia” (1983) in which the main character's feeling of displacement and longing is portrayed along with his  sense of kinship with the mad man with whom he shares the feeling of alienation. I consider this movie emblematic for the trope of nostalgia and place-boundness as theorized by Cassey and Boym.
