Sylvia Beach

A conversation about Ellis Avery's novel The Last Nude, including a discussion of Avery’s creation of a veritable who’s who of Twenties Paris: the painter Tamara de Lempicka and her lovers; Violette Morris (the butch French boxing champion of 1923); cult hero Sylvia Beach (founder of the Shakespeare and Company bookstore and the first publisher of James Joyce’s Ulysses); and Ernest Hemingway, whom Avery reimagines as Anson Hall, a writer blocked in multiple ways.

Robert Darnton famously described book history as " one of the few sectors in the human sciences where there is a mood of expansion and a flurry of new ideas. " Indeed, for literary scholars, a renewed attention to the materiality of texts and the networks in which they circulate has spurred exciting new interdisciplinary scholarship. Book History has also done much to expand the archive, considering the " low brow, " " middle brow, " and " high brow " interchangeably. This course will provide a background in some of the major theoretical statements to come from the field, including work on crucial nodes often ignored or dismissed in the study of " literature: " libraries, readers, publishers, and booksellers.

We'll then turn to the exhilarating (and humbling) task of considering the future of the book by examining new formats as well as outdated (and flat-out wrong) twentieth-century predictions of the book's demise. In other words, we'll use futures past (of film, television, and audiobooks) to frame our thinking in the contemporary moment. With this historical context in mind, we'll tackle some of the thorny questions of our present textual moment: How do you read T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land as an app? How about Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries's Dakota? How should scholars work with a text that’s an audiobook before or instead of becoming a print book?

The course will include visits to and collaborations with our library’s Special Collections and the Black Rock Press. As a seminar in theory, the course welcomes students of all periods and specializations as well as MFA students interested in “the book.”

Cet article se penche sur un aspect peu étudié de l’histoire des deux célèbres librairies La Maison des Amis des Livres et Shakespeare and Co : les portraits d’écrivains qui recouvraient littéralement les murs de ces deux lieux, représentations photographiques ou dessinées abordées dans toute leur matérialité, à l’aide des archives de Sylvia Beach, à l’université de Princeton, aux États-Unis, et d’Adrienne Monnier, à l’IMEC, à Caen.

Laure Murat presents her book, Passage de l’Odéon, Sylvia Beach, Adrienne Monnier et la vie littéraire à Paris dans l’entre- deux-guerres (Paris, Fayard, 2003).

This presentation is followed by a round table moderated by Adolphe Haberer (Emeritus, Université Lumière-Lyon 2), with Pascal Bataillard, Michel Cusin and Tiphaine Samoyault, three of the translators who offered a new translation of James Joyce's Ulysses (Paris, Gallimard, 2004).

Abstract: En 1927 fut publié un numéro spécial de la revue Feuilles Libres en hommage à Léon-Paul Fargue. Parmi la pléiade des contributeurs, écrivains francophones (Valéry, Soupault, Michaux, Drieu la Rochelle…) ou non (Rilke, Mario Puccini…), et artistes (Man Ray, Picasso, Laurencin, Klee…), figurait Joyce qui fit présent à Fargue d'extraits de la traduction en cours de son Ulysse.
Cette étude vise à situer le sens de ce hommage discret et vise à repérer le sens de cette amitiés qui unit les deux hommes durant tout le séjour parisien de Joyce de 1920 à 1940.
Le rôle de Fargue dans la traduction d'Ulysse, aux côtés de Valéry Larbaud en particulier, fait l'objet d'un examen particulier et ceci amène à s'interroger sur la place que Joyce aurait aimé lui accorder dans la rédaction/traduction de son Work in Progress, le futur Finnegans Wake.
Il est fait appel au concept d'objet-voix forgé par Lacan pour éclairer comme il se doit l'amitié particulière unissant l'auteur des épiphanies et le ludion des nuits parisiennes.

Estudio sobre el importante papel asumido por algunas mujeres en los profundos cambios que a nivel estético y formal se produjeron en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Tomando como modelo París, el capítulo repasa la diferente visión promovida por galeristas, libreras, artistas literatas que con sus acciones socavaron la cultura imperante abriendo paso a las diferentes vanguardias.
