Friedman has gone where no writer has dared go before -- into the brief catalog of Tears for Fears's recorded output in search of meaning and context. The thing about pop music is that one often needs to be the right age and in the right milieu (or at least, tuned in to the right radio station) to take it seriously. A photo of the young Friedman at the end of the book clarifies his qualifications. Me, I was a bit older and living in New York, and my heart was closed to Tears for Fears (though i kinda liked Everybody Wants to Rule the World). And so its interesting to view TFF through the eyes of an erudite fan, to see how the band could be seen as artful, as thematically and conceptually adventurous. I look forward to giving the band another listen with fresh ears.

I am not a fan of eighties pop despite the fact that I often find the worm of a song from that era crawling around my head on a not to rare occasion; however, Friedman’s book on Tears for Fears gave me a greater insight and appreciation of the depth of at least one of the main purveyors of eighties synth pop. The analysis is sharp and incisive and effectively supported by social and cultural context, and at times, and more humorously so by the author’s own passion and memories of the band.

Methodically written, a must for TFF fans and followers. Would have loved some analysis of "Elemental" and "Raoul and the kings..."

For me, "Shout" was formative, the song to which my rightful first kiss was bestowed on another, older girl. Thank you, Dan, for taking me back to that intense, tragic, beautiful, terrible time.
