Biltong is the South African version of beef jerky. Our version of beef jerky is called biltong, which is soft and tender. At Biltong Depot we make biltong the old fashioned way. We slice our beef and cure it with salt and aromatic spices, then air dry it for about 10 days.

Biltong was started by the Voortrekkers in South Africa during their ox wagon trip from the Cape inland to what was formally known as the Transvaal and Orange Free State provinces of South Africa. They had to preserve the excess meat they hunted along the way, so the preserved it by using vinegar, salt, coriander and other spices they had. The meat was hung to dry and became known as Biltong. It had a saltier taste than that made by Mr. Botha and his company. I know this as I was born in South Africa and was taught to make biltong by my Oupa (Grandfather) who was in turn taught by his Oupa.
