The election of Kamala Devi Harris, born of an immigrant Indian mother, cancer specialist Shyamala Gopalan, originally from Chennai, has put the global spotlight like never before on the small but high-achieving Indian-American diaspora. The community happens to be the most educated with the highest median income in the US, and has excelled in almost every area it has touched―from politics to administration, entrepreneurship to technology, medicine to hospitality, science to academia, business to entertainment, philanthropy to social activism.
This evocative collection―of the kind perhaps not attempted before―captures the rise of Indian-Americans across domains, by exceptional achievers themselves, like Shashi Tharoor, the ones who have been and continue to be a part of the “rise”, like MR Rangaswami and Deepak Raj, top Indian diplomats like TP Sreenivasan and Arun K Singh, scholars like Pradeep K Khosla and Maina Chawla Singh, and others who were part of, associated with, or keenly followed their stories.
A collector's item, this eye-opening saga of a diaspora, which is possibly amongst the most successful and enterprising globally, would not only prove to be highly readable and insightful for a wide readership, but also immensely substantive for scholars and people in governance.

This book uses the timeliness of the increased visibility of the Indian American community to explore the high impact of this group of immigrants in 16 essays. It offers ideas, stories and historical perspective from across industries that will interest Indian Americans, of course. It is also a sociological discourse that will engage all readers fascinated by the very American narrative of immigrant adjustments and assimilation.

Despite the fact that Kamala Harris is in no way responsible for the rise of Indian Americans or vice versa renders the inclusion of her name in the title somewhat sycophantic and laughable, the book is a catalogue of the great success of a large section of Indian Americans, many of whom are first generation immigrants. It is a worthwhile reading in that amidst the tales recounted are hidden the many factors that contribute to the success of a minority community in a nation to which they are new entrants. Yet, the book is glaringly incomplete for the omission of the other side of the story that includes many Indian Americans who are struggling as also the continuing bias and glass ceilings obstructing their progress. Coming at a time when anger towards immigrants is high in the USA, I also wonder if this would fan those flames further among those who do not care to comprehend fully the ingredients to this rise of Indian Americans.

For anyone who works in the US-India corridor, this book is a nice addition to the repertoire of works that inform how the diaspora are forging U.S.-India relations. Highly recommend for those in the space!

Each chapter tells the journey of a prominent contributor from South Asian (Indian) origins. I found the chapter by MR Rangaswami fascinating showing the trial and tribulations of a young student coming to the U.S. to attend school, ending up with a job offer that lead him on his journey to becoming a very successful and influential entrepreneur. The challenges of the Indian immigrant is highlighted but so is their unbelievable determination and moxie.

I knew the Indian community in the U.S. had a strong presence in fields such as medicine and hospitality, but reading the chapters on those industries made me realize how our community is now using our numbers to organize and become a powerful political voice. It's a journey in the making, and reading this, I felt proud of my Indian heritage and proud to be a Patel!

I picked this up because I am a huge admirer of one of the contributors, MR Rangaswami. Originally I planned simply to read his chapter (which was truly compelling) - but once I started perusing the rest I kept getting pulled into other wonderful essays, which are rich in real-world insights and inspiring stories. Really terrific.

I’ve always been interested in diaspora studies particularly in the varying experiences of the Indian diaspora populations around the world, and this book was a great insight into the Indian-American community’s history in this country. I learned a lot about what the Indian-American community has overcome to get where they are now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in knowing about the journey of Indian Americans !

This book nicely captures the meteoric rise of Indian Americans, from various dimensions...

'From the City Hall to the White House' (as one chapter says..) or from programmers to tech company board rooms, today Indiaspora is indeed omnipresent and influential in the US.. and this book chronicles events shaping that journey very well

The way contributors from varied disciplines have been assembled together itself helps add that balanced perspective to its theme

Looking like a novel in some parts and a short story collection in other parts, the book manages to effortlessly engage the reader..!

Given my deep connections to the tech world - living in Bengaluru, the "valley of India", I found the chapter on silicon valley (Accidental Capitalist) a fascinating read..!

Easy to read and informative, the book is truly a collector's item.

Highly recommended..
