Description: This high-quality book is the fourth edition of a detailed exposition, by three internationally recognized authorities, of physics, instrumentation, and data processing in nuclear medicine.
Purpose: As stated in the preface, the intent remains the same as it was for the first edition in 1980: to provide a didactic textbook on the physics and instrumentation of nuclear medicine that will be useful both as an introduction for trainees and other newcomers and as a reference for specialists in the field.
Audience: In both breadth and depth, it is suitable as an introductory textbook for residents, fellows, and other physician and nonphysician trainees, such as technologists, medical physics undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral residents and fellows in nuclear medicine. As a reference, it is useful for practicing nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, and medical physicists. It should be noted, however, that some of the material (for example, on tomographic image reconstruction and kinetic modeling) is more mathematical and more in depth than typically found in introductory books and, thus, may be challenging for technologists and some undergraduate students, as well as radiology residents on a nuclear medicine rotation.
Features: After a brief general introduction to field of nuclear medicine, the book progresses logically, covering the underlying physical principles (atomic and nuclear physics, radioactivity, radionuclide production, interactions of radiation with matter) of the field. Subsequent chapters address the technical bases (electronics, statistics, pulse-height spectrometry, detectors, and counting systems) of detecting and measuring nuclear radiations and the design, operating principles, and performance of clinical and preclinical nuclear medicine imaging instruments (including gamma cameras, SPECT and PET scanners, and multimodality devices). Other chapters address tomographic image reconstruction, image quality, tracer kinetic modeling, internal radiation dosimetry, and radiation safety, respectively. Each chapter concludes with a small number of references and suggested additional readings. The book uses hundreds of high-quality figures and tables and hundreds of equations, clearly set off from the text and with all parameters explicitly defined. Dozens of clearly presented, and invaluable, solved problems are included as well. Importantly, this revised and updated fourth edition features a new full-color layout, with many color photographs and nuclear medicine images. The color layout is not only aesthetically pleasing, it also is effective in emphasizing and otherwise conveying key features of the figures. Assessment: Like its predecessors, this edition is a comprehensive, authoritative, and clearly written didactic book on the physics and technology of nuclear medicine. The chapters on electronics, image quality, multimodality imaging, and pharmacokinetic modeling are unique for such a book and are particularly noteworthy. There is, however, a paucity of material on radionuclide therapy in general, and three-dimensional radionuclide dosimetry in particular, topics of increasing practical importance. Further, other than the addition of a chapter on multimodality imaging and updating of the material on SPECT and PET scanners, the content is largely unchanged from that of the previous editions. However, Dr. Cherry and his coauthors convey even complex mathematical subject matter (for example, tomographic image reconstruction) in a style understandable to nonphysicists. Moreover, they are able to relate the quality and information content of nuclear medicine images to underlying physical principles in a generally understandable manner. These features distinguish this book from the many other competing books currently available. It deservedly remains THE standard for introductory textbooks on nuclear medicine physics and instrumentation.
