Rent a Pocket Wi-fi for Easier Travel

As you can read about in the post “Pocket Wi-fi is Now an Essential Item for Travelers“, having a stable internet connection during your stay in Japan is a must.
Most visitors from abroad coming to Japan will be landing at Narita International Airport, the biggest airport in Japan. If you’re one of the many coming in through this hub  right outside of Tokyo, you might be wondering how easy it is to nab a pocket wifi at the airport after landing. And we’ve got plenty of tips to help make sure getting connected is as smooth as can be.

Quick Tip: Book Ahead!

First things first, if you are thinking of just winging it to find your pocket wifi rental after you land in Japan, we suggest you reconsider and make a booking in advance, before coming.
There are WIFI rental counters at the airports where you can apply and rent on the same day, however, most of them  have limited stock and they might be sold out on the day you arrive. Another important thing to note, is that some pocket wifi rental companies only accept advance bookings.
Another reason we suggest this is for the sake of you wallet! Prices are almost always cheaper for online bookings compared to counter pricing. Just think of it like this, when you pay at the counter, you’re also paying for the convenience of the same-day pickup.
Also, even advance bookings can be sold out during the peak seasons, like in March, April, October, and December. (This is especially true during holiday and Japan’s high tourist seasons,  spring and fall. For more information on the national holidays and peak travel times, see our article here.) If you are planning to travel during the high season, we recommend you make a booking extra early.

Renting a Pocket Wi-Fi at Narita Airport

While selection is limited, some pocket wi-fi rental companies have their own counters at the airport.
Those without individual counters offer a collective pick-up service at a counter called “QL Liner Counter” or from the Japan Post Office in the airport. Alternatively, most offer to deliver packages  to your accommodation by mail for you to collect from the front desk.

Though there have been talks about opening an airport counter, CDJapan Rental has decided to hold off for now so that it can continue to offer its loyal customers the lowest price possible on rental items. For collection at Narita Airport, orders can be placed online and packages are delivered to the post office in either Terminal 1 or 2 for customers to collect. While opening an individual counter is not something they plan to do, adding a QL Liner Counter option is in the works!

If it’s most important for you to speak directly to the shop staff and get assistance on how to use the product etc., it’s good to pick a company that has their own counter.
The downside is that their prices are relatively high. Also, make sure your flight arrives during their open hours.

3. Companies that are available at the post office

The post office in Narita Terminal 1 and 2 are open 8:30AM to 8:00PM, 365 days per year.
If you’re planning to make a post office pick-up, it’s important to make sure you do so with adequate time. For a flight scheduled to arrive at night after 7PM, there may be not enough time to collect your package. Going through immigration can be rather unpredictable, and after you collect bags, it might be well over an hour. If you have a particularly late arrival, have your package delivered to your hotel or to any Japan Post office near your accommodation instead.
