Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a treatment for conditions like traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, and migraines would seem intuitive, given its effect on condition-related ischemia and inflammation. However, hyperbaric therapeutic impacts for these in acute and chronic, or prolonged symptoms are elusive. Leighton & colleagues' review of the utility of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is provided in sections per disease and renders first a review of conventional pathological mechanisms and then articulates hyperbaric treatment targets versus their respective impacts. To promote student participation in physical activity, schools must support autonomy with developmentally appropriate equipment and space to facilitate physically active games. Positive and encouraging adults must maintain socially safe environments where pupils can be active with their friends. Physical education must be highly regarded, and pupils should have multiple opportunities to engage in PA throughout the school day. Learn more about these conclusions from Rosemarie Martin, PhD, in her latest review article, published in the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine: https://brnw.ch/21wJbtJ

A recent study found that only 22.9% of adult women and 17.8% of adult men had been advised to increase their physical activity level by a doctor or other healthcare professional. This is disheartening considering that only 24% of adults meet recommended physical activity levels, 40% of adults in the U.S. are obese, and weight loss drug prescriptions have increased 300%. Dr. Liz Joy and Dr. Mark Stoutenberg issue a call to action for providers to discuss PA with their patients in their latest Exercise is Medicine® blog: https://brnw.ch/21wJ5iz

Males and females experience different trajectories of neuromuscular function across the lifespan, with females demonstrating accelerated deconditioning in later life. Piasecki and colleagues hypothesize that the menopause is a critical period in the female lifespan, during which the dramatic reduction in sex hormone concentrations negatively impacts synaptic input to the motoneuron pool, as well as motor unit discharge properties.
