Mentorship is critical for early- and mid-career faculty success. Fiona Goggin, professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Kristen Gibson, professor in the University of Arkansas Food Science Department, received Outstanding Faculty Mentor Awards for providing outstanding mentorship to their colleagues. The entomology and plant pathology department also received this year's Provost Award for Departmental Excellence in Mentoring. We conduct research and achieve scientific discoveries that benefit Arkansans and beyond. Public research for all.
About us
The Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station is the state’s premier research agency for agriculture, food and natural resources. We are the research arm of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, one of the 20 institutions in the University of Arkansas System. Agricultural producers and processors look to the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station for research-proven technology. Through site-specific research under local conditions, we help Arkansans in the food and fiber sector adopt new practices that are appropriate for their circumstances. We also conduct extensive research on environmental and quality of life issues and count Arkansas families and communities among our stakeholders. Our mission is to conduct research and achieve scientific discoveries that benefit Arkansas citizens, expand agricultural sustainability and profitability, promote environmental stewardship, strengthen local and state economies and ensure safe and nutritious food supply.

Congratulations to Pouya Sohrabipour, grad student in the University of Arkansas Biological and Agricultural Engineering department, for taking first place in the poster contest at the AI in Agriculture Conference earlier this month. Sohrabipour worked with assistant professor Dongyi Wang on work that aims to efficiently detect and segment chicken carcasses on conveyor belts. They aim to pave the way for the integration of vision systems into robotic arms for autonomous poultry processing. Other co-authors on the work include Siavash Mahmoudi, Chaitanya Pallerla, Lee Schrader, and Wan Shou. First-year Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology master’s student, Anmolpreet Kaur is working with assistant professor Joanna Kud to investigate the molecular interactions between plants and nematodes “to better understand how soybean protects itself from root-knot nematode infection,” a major concern for farmers in #Arkansas and across the U.S. In addition to her research, one of her favorite things about being a grad student are the “new opportunities to interact with people and acquire new knowledge about science.” U of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture University of Arkansas Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural Food and Life Sciences University of Arkansas Graduate School and International Education #AgFoodLife #AgFoodInnovators #GradStudentLife

What do #AI and #MachineLearning have to do with animal science? Ask computational biologist Aranyak Goswami, a new assistant professor with the U of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture who is here to boost animal health and productivity research using these emerging technologies. “One of my main interests will be to explore microbiomes to improve cattle and poultry health,” Goswami said. “There are a lot of genomes which are coming out that need to be sequenced, and there are several gaps in this field.” Welcome, Aranyak Goswami! Wendell Hutchens is working to build up the turfgrass industry in Arkansas and beyond. His research focus is managing problematic turfgrass pests, but he's also been collaborating with Mike Richardson on research evaluating water management in golf course putting greens. Wendell's ultimate goal is to positively impact the turfgrass industry and build lifelong connections with the outstanding people who make it up. "I really love how it feels very personal, and you really get to know folks," Wendell said. "I don't think there's a better industry." Ph.D. student Faith Ouma in the University of Arkansas Food Science Department is working with associate professor Griffiths G. Atungulu, PhD to find optimal rice storage conditions to minimize the production of aflatoxin — a carcinogenic health hazard. In addition to her research, one of Faith’s favorite things about being a grad student is “networking and learning about what others are focusing outside [her] area of specialization.” Dr. Atungulu is the director of the University of Arkansas Rice Processing Program, and Faith works as part of the team of graduate students supporting the program. Billy Hargis has achieved much as a U of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture researcher and professor, but now he has an added honor — the newly named Eimeria hargisi — thanks to researchers at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. Hargis decided to commemorate the honor in an unexpected way — with a tattoo of the pathogen on his leg. Preserving nutrients and flavor while maintaining safety is the goal of a new framework for food processors developed by researchers with the University of Arkansas Food Science Department. Their study was recently published in the Journal of Food Protection. Co-authors on the paper include Arshpreet Kaur Khattra, Surabhi Wason, Kevin Thompson, Andronikos (ANDY) Mauromoustakos, Jeyam Subbiah, and Jennifer Acuff. This research was supported in part by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The FRST Project has launched a new #fertilizer recommendation tool that could save farmers money and reduce excess nutrient losses to the environment. A team of over 100 soil science and agronomic professionals from nearly 50 universities, four USDA divisions, several nonprofit organizations, and one private-sector partner worked for six years to develop the free, web-based tool. Participating scientists from the U of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture include: Nathan Slaton, assistant director of the Arkansas Ag Experiment Station; Gerson L. Drescher, assistant professor of soil fertility; Bronc Finch assistant professor and state extension specialist for soil fertility. Deanna Osmond, soil science researcher at North Carolina State University, is also one of the FRST Project leaders.
