The archipelago of Saõ Tomé and Principe is sometimes referred to as "Africa's Galapagos", as it is home to more than 200 species that exist nowhere else on Earth. However, at least a third of them are threatened with extinction, as invasive and introduced species, expanding agriculture, illegal logging, and other unsustainable use of natural resources put pressure on the islands’ unique ecosystems. Our partner BirdLife International engages local communities and authorities in an effort to halt deforestation and protect the primary forests which harbour many of the archipelago’s most threatened endemic species. President Biden has signed the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act into law! The new law will reauthorize and enhance the bipartisan Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA), which protects the habitats of migratory birds all along their seasonal routes. “This legislation recognizes that conservation knows no boundaries, and reversing troubling declines in bird populations means investing in habitats and communities throughout the hemisphere,” said Audubon CEO Elizabeth Gray, Ph.D.. Prior to its reauthorization, the NMBCA benefitted more than 5 million acres of habitat across the nesting, stopover, and wintering grounds for more than 350 migratory species. To continue this effective work, we now need Congress to fully fund this program, to protect birds wherever they fly.

📣 After years of dedicated conservation efforts, our Partner Ορνιθολογική BirdLife Greece has proudly announced that a pair of Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus) has been spotted nesting on the majestic Meteora rock formation in central Greece! This is a momentous occasion for the team of HOS/ BirdLife Greece and all the fans of the Egyptian Vulture, both within and beyond country’s borders. 💚 The renowned and beloved ‘bachelor of Meteora’, a male Egyptian vulture and the last remaining bird in a place that used to host a thriving colony, has been under our Partner's watchful eye for more than ten years. Now, he is no longer alone! (#CoupleGoals 🙃) Early April, a second bird was spotted in the area, and we are very happy to confirm that it is not merely a passerby, as has often been the case in the past, but a bird that has come to stay and create a new pair!
