Decades of overfishing have decimated one third of global fish stocks — upending the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems, and threatening the livelihoods and food supply of hundreds of millions of people who depend on them. Marine protected areas aim to give struggling species a safe haven from overfishing and allow their populations to rebound. But it’s not that simple. According to a new study from Conservation International and the Smithsonian Institution, the majority of protected reefs stretching nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from southern Mexico to Honduras are failing to boost adult fish populations. As a result, fisheries aren’t bouncing back in many places. Researchers have rarely looked closely at the ages of reef fish in protected sites — and the findings are a wake-up call, said Steven Canty, Smithsonian scientist and study author.

Did you miss the premiere of #ChangingPlanetPBS year 3? Don’t worry, you can still catch up with Conservation International CEO Dr. M Sanjayan on his journey. Globally, coral reefs are at crisis point – warming seas cause corals to bleach and without action nearly all reefs could die off in the next few decades. There's a race against time to help damaged reefs recover. This year, Sanjayan visits Laamu Atoll in the Maldives to take part in a world-first collaboration that could be the key to restoring reefs. There are no high-quality nature-based projects without Indigenous peoples and local communities, which is why our first NCS Investment Principles is 'Projects and programs equitably benefit people.'
🌿Tackling the climate crisis demands collective action, and Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) are playing a crucial role. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) is proud to share a powerful video featuring representatives of IPs and LCs discussing what climate finance means to them. 🌍Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) protect a large proportion of our planet's vital ecosystems. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) recognises this, and has partnered with VCMI to co-host a dedicated VCM Engagement Forum run by and for Indigenous People & local communities aimed at supporting and empowering communities involved in or interested in participating in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. 🤝 The video below showcases how #CarbonFinance can benefit Indigenous People and local communities and reinforces the need to support them, ensuring they have a strong voice in shaping a more inclusive and equitable Voluntary Carbon Market. 📈 🔗Find out more about our IPs and LCs VCM Forum: https://lnkd.in/e9ap63jF 🔗Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/ef6brbbN

“Policymakers now have a rare opportunity to leverage their market influence to facilitate a massive reallocation of private money toward saving nature — and there is no shortage of paths to pursue.” Conservation International Senior Fellow Carlos Eduardo Correa Escaf explores how policymakers can leverage fiscal policy, establish new markets through emissions trading systems, and implement conservation payments to redirect private funding towards nature conservation efforts. #EarthDay
