  • How the EU can support the Ukrainian defence industry. To win the war, Ukraine needs above all a lot of guns and ammunition. But it remains dependant on Western arms deliveries. In a new Brief, Jan Joel Andersson and Ondrej Ditrych call on the EU and its Member States to support Ukraine in developing its defence industry, focusing on 2 aspects: ➤ Investment in 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 and repair and maintenance facilities closer to the battlefield. ➤ Integrating Ukraine’s defence industry into the 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞. Revenues from 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 should be used to finance this. Read their Brief below 👇 or head over to our website.

  • #EUForesight: 10 critical trends that will significantly impact the EU in the coming decades. 1️⃣ 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞: a shift from cooperation to competition with new threats emerging such as hybrid warfare, information manipulation and the race for space dominance. 2️⃣ 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬: geopolitical fragmentation and the green transition lead to new threats to economic growth, while the economic and technological rivalry between the US and China affect global trade relations. 3️⃣ 𝐀 𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Europe's demographic decline, coupled with an aging population, puts pressure on the labour market and social security systems. 4️⃣ 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: climate change is accelerating and the EU will be severely affected. But it cannot tackle this emergency on its own. 5️⃣ 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: global energy consumption is rising, and so is the use of fossil fuel. The energy transition is likely to benefit some more than others and could open up new arenas of geopolitical competition, and social tensions within countries. 6️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: inequalities are growing in importance and complexity. Beyond economic inequalities, access to education, technology, healthcare, infrastructure, climate justice or intergenerational fairness are becoming increasingly relevant. 7️⃣ 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: the deployment and adoption rates of new technologies are accelerating and technological convergence is increasing. 8️⃣ 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡: the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted global interconnectedness, while widening the gap between rich and poor. The health sector will continue to be a driver of scientific and technological innovation. New treatments and therapies could bring huge dividends, while challenges such as anti-microbial resistance require close attention. 9️⃣ 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐬: Urbanisation and technological advancements transform how we live, work, and learn, with both opportunities and challenges. 🔟 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲: democracies are experiencing sustained attacks on their freedoms and way of life, with technology playing a complex role. For more on these trends and some of the strategic choices EU policymakers will have to take, check out the ESPAS report - Global trends to 2040.

  • Geopolitical Europe anyone? EUISS Director Steven Everts is back from Kyiv and raises the alarm: Ukraine needs more military support, and FAST. Europe & the West must act now. Supporting Ukraine to victory is achievable, it's the right thing to do and it's in our own interest. Key takeaways from his latest commentary: ⚔️ 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: #Ukraine desperately needs more air defence systems, fighter jets, and domestic weapons production support. ⏰ 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: the longer the war drags on, the more difficult it becomes for Ukraine. 🤝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: supporting Ukraine is also about protecting European security interests. ⚠️ 𝐀 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Europe must step up its commitment by: ➤ Delivering 7 air defence batteries (Patriot or similar) ➤ Expanding the F-16 coalition ➤ Supporting Ukrainian domestic weapons production ➤ Launching formal EU accession negotiations This is a critical moment for #Ukraine and Europe. Many thanks to European Council on Foreign Relations for the study visit to Kyiv. ➡ Read Steven's full commentary: https://lnkd.in/e7VjG7je
