We don't all have to be security researchers or practitioners, but if you use the Internet (and chances are if you're seeing this, you do!), we should all take an interest in how we can remain secure online. "The reality of digital societies is that you don’t have to be an Internet user to be a connected citizen. Understanding the security of the digital realm should, for digital natives, be like understanding personal hygiene." - Robin Wilton, Director, Internet Trust The Network and Distributed System Security Symposium (NDSS) highlights important and emerging areas we all should be paying attention to when it comes to securing our digital worlds. Strong human connections are just as critical as strong infrastructure when it comes to building resiliency. When 4 submarine cables were damaged off the coast of West Africa last month, years of community building proved valuable as network operators across the 13 affected countries began sharing and organizing alternative routes to reconnect their networks and countries to international destinations. Some networks were able to come back online in just a few hours—a turnaround time that wouldn't have been possible years ago. Did you know that we can make a "greener" Internet? Many Internet and environment advocates around the world are not only using the Internet to expand environmental advocacy and change but also to reduce any negative impact the Internet itself has on the climate. Learn more about the relationship between the Internet and the climate, how the Internet is helping the climate, how it's affecting climate change, and how we can adapt. #EarthDay #EarthDay2024 #Climate #ClimateChange #ecofriendly #greentech https://lnkd.in/gYaZatU6

Situated at the foot of the famous Everest Trail, the villages of Khunde and Khumjung are some of the most remote places on Earth. In 2022, Bikram Shrestha of the Nepal Internet Foundation set out to build “the highest community network in the world.” Access to the Internet has changed their lives, providing new economic opportunities, better healthcare, and the ability to connect with the wider world. Learn how we worked with Bikram, along with Broadpeak and 48percent.org to achieve this impressive feat: https://lnkd.in/g9-g9NkP

Policies and decisions by governments are putting the Internet at risk of fragmenting into isolated networks. We can’t let this happen. In a world where connectivity is critical, threats to the integrity of the Internet pose significant risks. Fragmentation prevents ordinary people from being able to create, learn, share, and connect freely. It means loss of access and erosion of our digital rights. We must fight back if we want to preserve the open and global nature of the Internet.
