A society-owned scientific publisher, providing impact, recognition and value for the scientific community

About us

We work closely with researchers, librarians, and partners worldwide to produce academic journals, books and conference series. Our aim is to cover the latest and best research in the physical sciences and beyond. As a subsidiary of the Institute of Physics, any surplus made by IOP Publishing goes directly to the Institute to assist their mission to help everyone build their knowledge of physics and to provide professional support for physicists. IOP Publishing supports global schemes such as INASP and EIFL to promote the dissemination of and engagement with science in developing and transition countries. We provide a range of services to help the scientific community register, validate, edit, disseminate, preserve and maximise the discoverability and authority of their research. These services include: developing novel and innovative journals to meet new community needs; managing peer review; archiving and preserving content; hosting and distributing research online; enabling the discovery of published research; introducing new tools and systems to help authors demonstrate the impact of their work; and publicising journal papers and their authors. IOP Publishing is a strong supporter of open science and open access to scientific research. A pioneer in open access publishing in physics, we launched the first fully open access journal in physics, New Journal of Physics, with the Institute of Physics and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft in 1998. Since then, we have launched several new fully open access journals. In addition, we have introduced open access publishing options for authors in our conventional subscription journals. IOP Publishing combines the values of a scholarly society with the technical expertise and efficiency of a substantial global publisher. Part of the scientific community, we work in close collaboration with our authors, readers, institutions, librarians and partners to ensure that what we do always serves their needs.

Our partner ResearchGate helps us to get a detailed understanding of who our users are, which gives us valuable insight. Essentially, they help us to deliver a better service and grow our author base. Our Chief Publishing Officer, Miriam Maus, delves into the rich insights and impact that Research Gate delivers: https://lnkd.in/eiwG9fVu You can also read more about the partnership in ResearchGate's CEO's blog post below.

    CEO/Co-Founder ResearchGate

IOP Publishing was one of our very first publishing partners and so I couldn’t be happier that they have again expanded their Journal Home partnership with ResearchGate, increasing from 18 to 50 of their journals! This is a real success story. Having initially started with a pilot of just 7 titles in 2022, IOPP already expanded their collaboration in 2023 to 18 of their key journals. To see this now extended again to include all their #openaccess journals, a majority of their subscription portfolio, and a number of their partner’s titles, really celebrates the powerful reach and impact that Journal Home is creating for them. In a great new interview with Miriam Maus, Chief Publishing Officer at IOP Publishing, she discusses the rich insights and unique impact that Journal Home is delivering. This partnership is helping IOPP increase the prominence and usage of their journals, build a better understanding of the global audiences interacting with their journals, and attract high quality submissions and publications. More than 170,000 full text articles covering all areas of physics from IOPP’s leading journals are now available to ResearchGate’s 25m+ members through this partnership – with 220,000+ authors already having these added to their profiles! This is further testament to the value this partnership is creating for IOPP’s journals and the global community of physics researchers. Antonia Seymour – I really enjoyed meeting with you and Miriam at Frankfurter Buchmesse and discussing the future of our partnership. I am so pleased that we are taking this next step in our partnership and look forward to seeing how our organisations continue to increase visibility and access for physics research! And Miriam, I completely agree with your description of our partnership: “IOP Publishing takes pride in the fact that we work with organisations who are innovative and like to do things differently. ResearchGate is one of those, so there's a lot of alignment.” We really enjoy working with innovative partners too! #OpenScience #ScientificCommunication #OA #OpenResearch #PhysicsResearch Sebastian Darr, Mary Sweny, Philipp Hess, Mônica Duarte, Tony Scott, Axel Tölke, Sören Hofmayer, Mathias Astell

“While change can inherently feel uncomfortable, leaders have a responsibility to help others.” This was the opening remark from our CEO Antonia Seymour who took part in a panel discussion about how academic publishers can respond to the demands for transformation and change. She emphasised the importance of building internal resilience to withstand ongoing turbulence and uncertainty. "You have to learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” Read the full report here on Research Information. https://ow.ly/po8z50RnZFq
