At the invitation of Professor Katalin Ligeti, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) at the University of Luxembourg, and in close cooperation with Professor Pierre-Henri Conac, Acting Director of the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) - University of Luxembourg, Professor Marlene Wind, PhD, Director of the Centre for European Politics at the University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet), delivered an inspiring presentation to a full auditorium on the democratic backsliding in some Member States and how the European Court of Justice should react to this development.    During her presentation, Professor Wind also responded to the scholarly critics of constitutionalism, while Lars Bay Larsen, Vice-President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, shared his insights on how the Court applies Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union regarding the Union’s core values. The presentation was followed by an engaging Q&A session and a lively debate moderated by Professor Conac.    Thank you, Professor Wind, for your participation and insightful presentation!

Such a pleasure to give a talk to a full auditorium together with the vice president of the Europæiske Unions Domstol Lars Bay Larsen at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL) - University of Luxembourg My talk was on the paradoxical parallel development we are currently facing of democratic backsliding in the EU and more and more scholarly critique of constitutionalism - urging to take back power from the legal to the political branch. And also on how the Europæiske Unions Domstol simultaneously is pushed to define art2 values like democracy and judicial independence by the many backsliding cases that ends up at its doorstep. "Research in Law means Reading, Thinking, Discussing!"    We welcome Professor Carlos Eduardo Japiassú from the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) to the LCEL community as a visiting researcher! 🌍 Invited by Professor Pierre-Henri Conac, Acting Head of the LCEL, and Professor Katalin Ligeti, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance - University of Luxembourg, Professor Japiassú brings a wealth of expertise in Criminal Law, collected from his extensive academic journey.   With a BA, MA, and PhD in Law from UERJ, and post-doctoral experience at the University of Warwick, Professor Japiassú currently serves as a full professor at UERJ and at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and coordinator of the postgraduate program in Law at Universidade Estácio de Sá (UNESA). His international engagements include lecturing at the Master's Course in Criminal Justice and Human Rights in France, serving as a guest researcher at Beijing Normal University in China, and holding key positions in global legal associations.   During his stay at the LCEL, Professor Japiassú will explore the topic of "Compliance and the Fight against Corruption in Brazilian Law", sharing his insights with our researchers and staff members from both LCEL and the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Finance (FDEF). Reflecting on his experience, Professor Japiassú remarked, "Research in law means reading, thinking, and discussing, and the LCEL, with its special infrastructure, is a great place to do just that."
