Today is #EarthDay and to join in with this year’s theme of #PlanetVsPlastics, we wanted to share how we’ve been working to eliminate or reduce our single-use plastic usage within the Met Office. Eliminating single-use plastics has been achieved by replacing plastics with non-plastic alternatives, for example, removing plastic bottled drinks in vending machines and using paper parcel tape instead of plastic for outgoing deliveries. Where no suitable alternatives are available, we reuse or reduce our usage, including the reuse of packaging materials we have received with incoming parcels and phasing out shrink wrap rolls used in catering. We are proud to hold the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Champion Award – for tips on reducing your plastic usage, see their website: https://lnkd.in/e4Ce39-i Find out more about waste management at the Met Office: https://lnkd.in/ejBGy-Y4 Participate in Earth Day by finding a cleanup event near you: https://lnkd.in/gXQDRy87

Did you know we have a corporate charity that we partner with on projects and support their research and campaigns? Our partnership with The Wildlife Trusts links to our 'force for good' value, and the charity links to our sustainability and biodiversity aims. Yesterday our executive team volunteered with Devon Wildlife Trust in Exeter's Ludwell Valley Park. They installed new ‘kissing gates’ using an improved design for dog walkers and to stop cattle getting through.

Ed Borlase is a Bronze level Glider operator in Devon, and part of Dartmoor Gliding Society. Here he tells us the crucial role the weather, weather forecasts and data play to be able to fly safely. #WhenAccuracyMatters   “I always find it amazing when you actually see the forecast playing out in front of you as predicted; whether it’s being stuck on the ground in an intense downpour of gusty rain as a cold front pushes its way through, or when you really feel the power and strength of a thermal as it’s lifting you upwards at a rate of 800ft a minute – it’s all pretty incredible!”    Hear from Ed about the specific types of lift gliders need in order to stay in the air, how he got into gliding and the role of weather forecasting and data:  https://bit.ly/3JcDmAF And you can see how our presenter and meteorologist Aidan Mcgivern fared when he swapped our weather studio for a 2-person glider 1500ft above the ground: https://bit.ly/3xrWibO

In the photograph we can see Ed wearing a light blue shirt and he appears to be being filmed speaking as we can see the back of a man with dark hair holding a video camera in the forefront of the image.
