A piece of hockey history is now part of our collections at the Minnesota Historical Society. MNHS staff met with Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who signed and handed over the custom mask he wore on Native American Heritage Night in November 2023. The mask was designed by Mdewakanton Dakota artist Cole Redhorse Taylor, who participated in the Native American-Artist-in-Residence (NAAIR) program with MNHS in 2014. Fleury wore the mask to honor his wife, Véronique Larosee Fleury, who is an Indigenous person of Canada. MNHS purchased the mask at auction for $35,100, with the money raised supporting the Minnesota Wild Foundation and the American Indian Family Center.
