  • Join us virtually or in person on Wednesday 8 May for a seminar by OECD Chief Economist Clare Lombardelli. Clare Lombardelli will present an overview of the lessons drawn from the latest literature on productivity growth and its policy dimensions, with a focus on three key themes: - the determinants of productivity growth and its dispersion between leading and laggard firms, - the role of technology diffusion, and in particular Artificial Intelligence (AI) diffusion, in the context of an aging population, - the role of human capital, skill mismatches, and labour shortages for productivity dynamics. Drawing on empirical evidence and policy insights, the presentation will touch on opportunities for long-term growth, as well as potential risks for the level-playing field and inclusive economic development. This seminar will be the closing session of the Treasury Guest Lecture Series under the ‘Productivity in a Changing World’ theme and will be introduced by Dominick Stephens, Treasury’s Deputy Secretary and Chief Economic Adviser. Date and time: Wednesday 8 May, 1:30 - 3pm NZST Location: Online, or in person at The Treasury, Level 3, 1 The Terrace, Wellington If you would like to attend the seminar in person, please use this link to register: https://lnkd.in/gWWzdiz2 To register for virtual attendance, please use the link below: https://lnkd.in/gT8Bpc-V

  • Join us on Tuesday 7 May for our next Productivity in a Changing World seminar from Professor Dani Rodrik, Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at the Harvard Kennedy School. After years on the periphery in economics, industrial policy is now the subject of an emerging strand of research. In this virtual seminar, Professor Rodrik will provide a productive overview of how this complex policy works. Our guest speaker will evaluate the standard rationales and critiques of industrial policy against the new empirical approaches to measurement, as presented in the recent paper 'The New Economics of Industrial Policy' he co-authored with R. Juhasz and N. J. Lane. Professor Rodrik will conclude by reviewing how industrial policy is being reshaped by a new understanding of governance, a richer set of policy instruments beyond subsidies, and the reality of deindustrialisation. This seminar will be introduced by Caralee McLiesh, Treasury Secretary and Chief Executive. Date and time: Tuesday 7 May 2024, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM NZST Location: Online You can register for this event via the link below. https://lnkd.in/gdfSnnWf

  • This Friday is our next Treasury Guest Lecture Series seminar with Erik Berglöf, Chief Economist of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), who we are fortunate to have joining us in person in Wellington. With biodiversity declining faster than at any time in human history, nature’s resilience is being severely eroded. Preserving nature and biodiversity is now seen as important as, and closely related to, climate change mitigation and adaptation. There are many opportunities to leverage nature as infrastructure, integrate nature-based solutions into infrastructure development. We are looking forward to next Wednesday's Productivity in a Changing World seminar, with Professor Davud Rostam-Afschar from the University of Mannheim. A key challenge of our time is the secular decline in economic growth around the world. In this seminar, Professor Davud Rostam-Afschar will discuss the role of factors in product and labour markets that contribute to this challenge and explore opportunities identified by economic research that may help get the economy back on track to prosperity. In addition, Davud will consider ways of organising product and labour markets in light of technological progress. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence change the way we work and do business. They may threaten jobs, but they could also help boost productivity. Our guest speaker will be addressing how these new technologies can be leveraged for the benefit of businesses, workers, and consumers. When: Wednesday, 27 March 2024 10.30AM - 12.00PM NZDT Where: Momentum Consulting, Level 8, Simpl House, 40 Mercer Street, Wellington, and also online For virtual attendance, please register via the following link: https://lnkd.in/edBT7kYe To attend in person, please register via the following link: https://lnkd.in/ecge9wuy

In a recent speech at the New Zealand Economics Forum, Secretary to the Treasury Caralee McLiesh talked about the changing fiscal realities facing policymakers and why the Treasury believes a period of fiscal tightening is required now. She also discussed how our fiscal institutions could evolve to meet immediate and longer-term challenges. A copy of the speech is available on the Treasury website. https://lnkd.in/gd6a4kzF
