In the late 19th century, picture framer John Thallon took meticulous notes in the form of a ledger. Within, he recorded the names of his clients – from opera singers to sea captains and renowned artists – frame types and even packing details. Today, thanks to the patience and persistence of our talented NGV Conservation team, and the generous support of Jarman Framing and the Professor AGL Shaw AO Bequest, Thallon’s ledger has been fully digitized and is available to read online. Join us in celebrating our Conservation department, then explore this historic leather-bound document and discover a fascinating part of Melbourne’s history.
