'Too many people are being signed off sick but the prime minister should look closer to home for the causes. There are long waiting times for NHS services for musculoskeletal conditions, such as back and neck pain – the second most common reason for sickness absence. Long waits lead to more complex problems and we know that the greater the amount of time someone is off work, the less likely they are ever to return.' The CSP responded to Rishi Sunak’s speech in which he declared that Britain is suffering from a 'sicknote culture'.

A strange thing happened last week when NHS England published its 2024/25 planning guidance. One word was missing and it is likely to be integral to its success. #RightToRehab #Health #ICF

Getting intermediate care right is vital for patients and health systems. Ten days in hospital for someone over 80 leads to the equivalent of ten years of deconditioning. According to the Health Foundation in 2023, at least 1 in 4 people expecting to receive home-based intermediate care and nearly half of those intended for bed-based intermediate care were delayed in hospital waiting for care. Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust's and Leeds City Council's Active Recovery pilot sees NHS and social care staff working together, jointly planning discharge and visiting people on their first day home from hospital. Joined up working with rehab at the centre is empowering staff to help people live independently in their own homes, reducing the ‘revolving door’ effect with people bouncing between home and acute hospitals. This way of working is yielding results. Fewer hospital discharges are cancelled or delayed, both social care and NHS staff report greater satisfaction in their work, and people discharged from the service need markedly fewer hours of domiciliary social care. How does intermediate care work in your area?
