The independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK
About us
We are the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity. We enable the delivery of free and fair elections and referendums. This includes focussing on the needs of voters and addressing the changing environment to ensure every vote remains secure and accessible. We regulate political finance – taking proactive steps to increase transparency, ensure compliance and pursue breaches. We use our expertise to make and advocate for changes to our democracy, aiming to improve fairness, transparency and efficiency. We have UK wide responsibilities and are accountable to the UK Parliament, the Scottish Parliament and the Senedd. Our work is directed to meeting the needs of each of the four parts of the UK.

A massive part of the work of The Electoral Commission is making sure voters are able to participate in elections, and of course it’s game over for anyone if they’re not on the electoral register in the first place. The period of our new-look voter registration campaign ahead of the 2 May elections has seen over 1 million applications to register, exceeding expectations and a massive step forward - for us, for the parties and campaigners out campaigning for votes, for the local authorities who drive electoral registration locally, and for our charity partners who help us reach audiences who face barriers to participation. It’s a collaborative team effort to drive engagement and I’m hugely proud of our contribution towards making it happen. Future reform of registration is vital - and is already on the agenda of the government in Wales - to more automatically get voters on the register and remove this practical barrier. We’ll be continuing to make the case for reform, making better use of available data; but for now our focus is on the polls in just over two weeks’ time.
Today is one of the best days of my career. Since launching our new voter registration campaign on 1 March, over one million people have registered to vote! The campaign closed at midnight last night and the response has been amazing. To get one million more people on the electoral register is genuinely one of my proudest achievements. Good comms can make a massive difference. I'm incredibly proud of my team and those across the Electoral Commission who played a part in making this happen; and huge thanks to our agency, McCann Demand. Roll on 2nd May (and don't forget your ID when you vote) 🥳🥳🥳

With elections coming up on 2 May - make sure #YourVoteMatters by using it yourself and not letting someone else take that power from you or anyone else. We’ve teamed up with The Electoral Commission to help prevent #ElectoralFraud and help you know the signs to spot. Has someone you know been intimidated or bribed in order to influence their postal vote, or has someone they know impersonated them to use their vote? If you’re worried and have info that could help stop electoral fraud, tell our charity what you know. We keep you 100% anonymous, so no-one will ever find out you spoke up. Click to learn more about the warning signs to spot and to speak up today: https://lnkd.in/dQM7EVze
