We were joined by our newest colleagues yesterday for Take Your Child to Work Day. A few policies had to be temporarily adjusted: dress code was downgraded to ‘casual,’ snacks were provided in every conference room, and mid-afternoon naps were granted to a few lucky staff. The climate crisis is a global health crisis. This week, we are sharing the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative's first-ever Climate Framework. Malaria is a climate-sensitive disease. Climate variability and increasing extreme weather events can both: (1) interrupt malaria prevention and treatment interventions, and (2) affect malaria-carrying mosquitos by creating more ideal environments for this vector to breed and thrive, accelerating the vector lifecycle leading to increased transmission rates. Climate shocks and changing weather patterns threaten to undo decades of progress–and U.S. investments–in malaria control and elimination. NEW BLOG: Gender-based violence (GBV) and gender inequality impact HIV prevention, testing, and treatment outcomes and pose a significant barrier to achieving HIV epidemic control. It can also be cyclical: stigma and discrimination around HIV status can lead to GBV. Through The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), USAID is working with our partner countries to address GBV as an essential component to ending the HIV epidemic and protecting human rights.
