The professional association of Victorian barristers who provide legal representation & advice without fear or favour.
About us
The Victorian Bar is a private, voluntary, self-funded, non-profit professional association of barristers who practise in Victoria. Barristers connected to the Victorian Bar’s LinkedIn company profile are independent self-employed members of the Victorian Bar. The work of the barrister is built on the proud tradition of providing strong and independent legal representation and advice without fear or favour to all in the community. Since 1891, Victoria has had a fused or amalgamated legal profession. That is, there has been a single admission to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. The terminology changed with the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) to admission as an “Australian lawyer” and licensing to practise as an “Australian legal practitioner” and “local legal practitioner”. "Barrister” is defined in the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic) as “an Australian legal practitioner who engages in legal practice solely as a barrister”.

It is important to know your legal rights during a bushfire. It is also important to prioritise the safety of yourself and others. If you are not at your property during a fire emergency, Victoria Police, the CFA and park rangers can stop you trying to reach it and order you to leave the emergency area. If a fire is nearby, and you have chosen to stay because you have a financial interest in the property, authorities can't force you to leave. This right applies to landowners, tenants and people who own or lease a caravan in a caravan park. Find out more about your rights during a fire emergency https://lnkd.in/gG_kBBj8

Some Victorians need more support with disaster preparation. They might have a chronic health condition. Or they might live alone, which makes evacuating with pets difficult. Here are some of our preparation tips: • Get your important documents together, including your list of medications. Keep these documents in a weatherproof bag or container. Make electronic copies by taking photos of the documents and emailing them to yourself. Ask a younger relative or neighbour for assistance if you need someone tech-savvy. • Build a support network of people and organisations who understand your needs and can assist you before, during or after a disaster. Keep a list of their contact details and photograph them so you have an electronic copy. • Have a clear evacuation plan and share it with neighbours and your family. If you have a carer, ensure they understand the plan, too. If you no longer drive, factor this into your plan. • Find out where you're supposed to go if there's an evacuation – your local council should be able to help with this. • Keep an eye on emergency warnings and keep your devices charged (phones, tablets, medical equipment). Being prepared helps you stay safe. Visit the Disaster Legal Help Victoria website for more legal information, including on Wills and powers of attorney. https://ow.ly/Y0E550Qsmy9

If you need to leave your home quickly in a bushfire, flood or storm, you may not have important documents like your prescriptions, Centrelink paperwork, Wills or powers of attorney. This can cause stress and delays at a difficult time. Get your important documents together before a disaster strikes. Keep them safe in a weatherproof bag or container. We recommend also making electronic copies so you can always access your information. The easiest way to make an electronic copy is to take photos of your documents with your phone. You can email the photos to yourself, keep them on your phone, or store them in a cloud. You can also use a scanner to make electronic copies. Find out more https://lnkd.in/ggKvH-NH
