Congratulations to the 2023 Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize winners: Jared Bennett and Justin Hicks from Louisville Public Media. Their winning entry, "Invasive and Incomplete: How flood cleanup left eastern Kentucky feeling violated and vulnerable" is an investigation for The Kentucky Center Investigative Reporting. The Schorr Prize judges finalist judges — NPR White House correspondent Asma Khalid and Here & Now co-host Scott Tong — said: "As listeners, we were struck by the richness of the residents who told their stories of grief and loss. Jared and Justin's team combined these voices with appropriate music mixed to deliver first-hand experiences to the audience. It's an engaging listen… also a testament to solid investigative reporting delivered to the listener by audio and illustrated to the web audience online."

Reporter Martha Bebinger has been recognized for her reporting on efforts parents are taking to keep their children and others alive amid the worsening opioid crisis with a 2024 Gracie Award from Alliance for Women in Media. The story, "'I ain't found it yet.' No line this mother won't cross to save her addicted daughter," was the result of a collaboration between NPR and WBUR and won for News Feature in the Radio - Nationally Syndicated Non-Commercial category. https://lnkd.in/ekhVxr2p "This is a story that urgently needed to be told. Martha wanted to show the lengths to which parents like Renae will go to keep their children alive amid a merciless drug epidemic — but who often do so in the shadows due to fear or shame," said WBUR Executive Editor for News Dan Mauzy. "Martha pursued this story for years. Now, thanks to her extraordinary reporting and to Renae, who was willing to share her story, parents and loved ones know they are not alone."

Imagine if, one day, you are accused of something. Something horrible, violent, heinous. Something you swear you did not do, and nothing you say can convince anyone otherwise — even the people closest to you. That’s Sophia Johnson’s story. Sophia was starting fresh: A new life, a new husband, a baby on the way. But it all unraveled on January 10, 2002, when her mother-in-law Marlyne Johnson was found murdered in her home. Days later, Sophia was charged with the murder. To this day, Sophia swears she didn’t kill her mother-in-law. But someone says they witnessed it — her own brother. When family betrays family, who do you believe? In this story of a sibling rivalry beyond compare, WBUR’s Amory Sivertson turns the clock back. She reexamines an unsolved case, a family torn apart, and a woman who wasn’t believed. From WBUR and Zac Stuart-Pontier of ZSP MEDIA, “Beyond All Repair” is a 10-part true crime investigation into a cold case. And the series ends with an answer. The first two episodes of “Beyond All Repair” are out today. Subscribe now: https://lnkd.in/eHNmCME3
