Pyramid in South Korea

10km from the centre of Uiseong (의성) city, at the inner outskirt of the village Seoktam-ni (Soktap-ri) (=stone tower village), this fine 5 layered rock-piled square pyramid stands.

This pyramid has a space for Buddhist statues, like Zutō in Japan, on every side and 2 of them still contain statues. The prove that this is a kind of Buddhist proto-padoda.

Korean people call these kinds of pyramids as 'pangdanhyeong jeokseoktap (방단형적석탑 = square layered stone-piled tower)', 'kedansik jeokseoktap (게단식적석탑 = stairs-styled stone-piled tower)' or 'pangdan jeokseok yugu (방단적석유구 = square layered stone-piled site)'.

At the entrance of Korean villages, there often stand the totem poles called 'changseung (장승)' or the cairns called 'seonangdang (서낭당)', this village has latter one.

Designated as No. 301 of Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeongsong-Bugdo province
