Starting from the recent publication of the young Antonio Rosmini’s letters (1813-1819), the author of this paper intends to probe the topic of friendship within the formation of the Roveretan philosopher. In particular, two interconnected aspects will emerge. On the one hand, the relevance of the relationships – often qualified by a deep friendship – in which Rosmini matured both as man and scholar. On the other, starting from the personal experience and the several contents he studied, his high conception of friendship.

Fulvio De Giorgi is an expert on Rosmini’s life and spirituality. His contribution identifies the sources and authors that allowed Rosmini to become deeply knowledgeable about Is-lam and its history during his studies at the University of Padua (1816-1819). Simone Assemani, who was Professor of Holy Scripture and Oriental Studies at Padua and pub-lished many works on Arabic culture, is shown to have had a particularly important influ-ence.

This article reconstructs the philosophical path followed by Bertrando Spaventa up to the publication of  La filosofia italiana nelle sue relazioni con la filosofia europea,  which represents the culmination of his studies on the Renaissance. As I will argue, by rediscovering the value of those thinkers belonging to the Italian Renaissance who were already well known and studied outside of Italy, Spaventa offered his contribution to the construction of Italian national identity. However, Spaventa’s attempt was made in clear disagreement with the Neo-Guelph tradition and his discourse on Italian philosophy surprisingly resulted in the denial of any national connotation of modern philosophy.

This paper focuses its attention on Rosmini’s relationship with art, especially painting. Through the analysis of Rosmini’s Diario dei viaggi [ Travel Diary ] - a private journal of aesthetic and historico-artistic character, written between the years 1820 and 1854 in many Italian cities (including Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples) – Rizzioli reveals the little-known profile of a Rosmini connoisseur of art, to whom a reliable, classical taste provides a valid key of interpretation for medieval, Gothic and Baroque works of art.

With this paper, I aim to examine the influence of Rosmini’s thought on Francesco Bonatelli, focusing on the early reflections of the philosopher of Iseo. The brief essay  Sulla sensazione (1852) places itself between Rosmini’s gnoseology and Mamiani’s spiritualism; in the context of the experimental psychology, it provides some interesting suggestions about the nature of sensation, attention, intellective perception and consciousness.

Antonio Rosmini is practically unknown in Lutheran Sweden. Apparently, only one significant Swedish text has been published about his philosophy, an essay in 1879 by Professor E.O. Burman at the University of Uppsala. After a brief introduction of Burman, some illustrative excerpts from his essay are presented in Italian translation.

Beginning with some suggestions on teaching, Rosmini reminds the intellectuals of his time about the two fundamental characteristics of philosophy: humility and courage. Hu-mility consists of recognizing those who have gone before, the forefathers, all those who have tried to think the one truth, like ‘summits’ that constitute the uninterrupted chain of perennial philosophizing. Yet humility does not mean giving up. The philosopher must be ‘courageous’, ready to depart from beaten paths to open new research routes which will become voices of truth. This is the way Rosmini himself philosophizes: with the forefathers and beyond them. This is an important lesson which contemporary philosophy must re-turn to meditate upon.

In this paper the author proposes to reflect on some aspects of the book The Idea of Justice by Amartya Sen, in the light of the work of the Catholic Italian philosopher Antonio Rosmini, one of the first thinkers to use the term “social justice” during the nineteenth century. In the first place, the author shows the similarities between Sen and Rosmini on the importance of reason in the analysis of social justice against purely emotional and pragmatic proposals. Secondly, he proposes a comparison between the analysis developed by Sen and Rosmini on transcendental theories of justice and structural changes in order to reach a just society. Thirdly, the paper intends to show how the choice for the people and their capabilities taken by Sen can be enlightened and deepened from the perspective of Rosmini’s personalist theory of capabilities. Forthly, he describes the cognitive turn proposed both by Sen and Rosmini for institutions and public policies. Finally, the author enounces some o...

In the first part of the essay, the author examines the five plagues of the Church that are presented by the great Catholic intellectual Antonio Rosmini in 1848 in a text entitled Delle Cinque Piaghe della Santa Chiesa which was very influential for Italian Catholicism in the 20 th century. The author argues that the text is not simply a diagnosis of the unsatisfying state of Catholicism but also refers to the question of the sacred and the holy. Holiness is to be linked the unpronounceable Tetragrammaton YHWH designating something inaccessible to human power. Rosmini, conscious of the power mechanisms of society and their totalitarian grasp, imagined a lovingly devoted Church to have the task of renunciating earthly regimes of power, thereby remembering its evangelical origins. The author shows that each of the plagues designates a critique of Church's claim to worldly power. In the second part, he examines a conception of holiness in which the holy designates man as oscillatin...

The article aims to show some significant parallels between the phenomenology of Renato Lazzarini and Antonio Rosmini’s philosophy. Its field of enquiry is restricted to the gnoseological sphere and revolves around the notions of 'intentionality' and 'intuition'. The analysis of the cognitive act will allow us to grasp the particularity of each position, but also to highlight those common elements that are the basis of their shared openness to the metaphysical instance.

This paper proposes a comparison among Husserl, Stein, and Rosmini about the topic of the genesis of community (in Husserl and Stein) and of society (in Rosmini).  For all three thinkers, the recourse to anthropological analysis is fundamental. Through this approach, they investigate the various degrees of human associative forms. The comparison is conducted focusing, in particular, on Rosmini and Stein.

Clemente Rebora, after entering the Institute of Charity, has studied for a long time the figure and the work of Antonio Rosmini. To his Founding Father, the poet-priest has dedicated several prose, but also some verses of his lyric production. With this essay, therefore, I intend to put in relief, in particular, which kind of Roveretan’s portrait is possible to arise from the Clemente Rebora’s poetry.

The life and work of Msgr. Luigi Cesare (De) Pavissich (1823-1905) are at present forgotten; nevertheless, he was an eclectic scholar, interested in many disciplines (including history and culture). He was an important school inspector during the Habsburg Empire. This paper focuses its attention on Passavich’s friendship with Fr. Sebastiano Casara (1811-98), with whom he shared a deep admiration for Rosmini and Rosmini’s doctrine. It also provides a cross section of the sharp dispute between supporters and opponents of Rosmini’s ideas in the decade 1883-93. The dispute had arisen for three main reasons: Rosmini’s heavy, sometimes abstruse language; his unusual way of thinking; last but not least, his relationships with the political debate of the time. Along with other supporters, Pavissich made Rosmini well known in eastern Italy and among Slavic populations.

Starting from Rosmini’s discussion on the issue of foreigners’ rights, the article analyses the author’s thought about justice and individual human rights. It has the following two aims: first, it aims to emphasize Rosmini’s modernity; second, it wants to explain what kind of natural law theory Rosmini refers to, clearing up the interrelationships that our author establishes among right, anthropology, and moral philosophy.

The article focuses on Rosmini’s concept of instinctive behaviour, as it is developed in the Anthropology as an Aid to the Moral Science. Rosmini refers to instinct in opposition to a widespread trend towards the mechanization of the animal; to this aim, he includes in the animal’s instinctuality the faculty of imagination. Animal imagination is seen as responsible for behavioural phenomena such as imitation and sympathy, and can even constitute an inner world organized around reliable space-time coordinates. In the concluding remarks, it will be shown that Rosmini’s approach was highly original in the contemporary and immediately subsequent Italian philosophical context.

The present paper is intended to highlight the figure of the Roveretan priest Pietro Orsi and the important role he played in the education of the young Rosmini. Through the study of the most significant stages of Orsi’s professional career as a teacher we want to search for traces of a long-term educational influence on Rosmini. This can shed light on the intellectual qualities of Rosmini, that were not only cultural, spiritual and moral but also had a decidedly scientific character.

This paper analyzes in its various aspects the relationship between the abbot Rosmini and Giuseppe Morozzo della Rocca, who was bishop of Novara from 1817 to the year of his death in 1842. This relationship marks the birth of the Rosminian Congregation and influences its future diffusion; we will deepen its initial dynamics and its subsequent development, passing through key moments such as the approval of the Constitutions in the geo-political context of the Kingdom of Sardinia between the Restoration and the first uprisings of the Italian Risorgimento. The concluding observations will be supported by the intense correspondence between Rosmini and Morozzo della Rocca, from which an excerpt is given below.

At eighteen, while attending gymnasium, Rosmini had a first important encounter with the scientific disciplines. They aroused great interest in him and led him to integrate the school’s standard study programs through further personal research in physics and mathematics. This paper deals with one aspect of this research, starting from the letters written by Rosmini to his teacher Orsi in 1815. It has the double aim of analysing the scientific skills shown by the young Rosmini and of highlighting the possible inclusion of these skills into larger interdisciplinary projects, that will later become major issues in the philosopher’s production.

The author's intent is to explain how Antonio Rosmini uses the binomial matter-form distinction, which is of Aristotelian origin. He assesses its application in epistemological and ethical issues. With regard to the latter group, he distinguishes between the anthropological and the moral use of such distinction. The author also discusses some Nietzschean and Kantian ideas as they appear in the light of Rosmini’s position.

Antonio Rosmini was an eager reader of philosophical classics and a deep connoisseur of tradition. His work can be intended as a transparent personal contribution to the thoughts of authorities. The idea of being is a delicate issue and seems to be strictly related to that lumen, which he knew through medieval philosophers' works. The author reviews several contemporary studies in order to appreciate Rosmini's critics’ condition regarding the re-lationship between ideal being and scholastic theory of illumination.

Starting from his work L’influenza culturale di Benedetto Croce, the paper proposes a reconstruction of Gianfranco Contini’s conception of intellectual activity. In particular, it argues that the philologist conceived of this activity as a ‘health method’, which is to say as a rational activity that lends order to reality and assuages human anxieties. At the same time, the paper highlights the indebtedness of Contini’s conception to thinkers such as Spitzer,  Holderlin, Rosmini and, indeed, Croce himself.

The essay provides an outline of Italo Mancini’s interpretation of Rosmini. Mancini (1925-1993) was one of the most important Italian philosophers of the second half of the twenti-eth century. His interpretation, which focuses mainly on Rosmini’s ontology and meta-physics, reconstructs the development of Rosmini’s thought from the Nuovo Saggio to the Teosofia; identifying within it a peculiar form of ontologism, which is also critically exam-ined in the paper.

This paper compares Giuseppe Capograssi and Pietro Piovani’s interpretations of Rosmini’s Philosophy of Right. According to Rosmini, the entire question of right is contained within the concept of person. Capograssi considers this identification of ‘person’ with ‘right’ to be the most original aspect of Rosmini’s philosophy of right: the power of an indi-vidual life, through its activity, becomes the source of subsistent right. Emotions, enjoy-ment and personal intimacy are therefore at the root of juridical life. The characteristics of legal institutions can be traced back to the vital reality of individual personal lives. It is because they are free that people connect things with themselves. Thus Piovani considers the historicity of the juridical experience to be what best validates it as the crux of a moral philosophy that seeks to perceive the ideas within the ethos of a society.

The present article intends to show that the aesthetics of Rosmini is an important theoretical node for a regeneration of modernity and that Rosminian aesthetic perspective reveals itself to be prophetic in responding to the issues involved in the contemporary. Rosmini’s aesthetics, attesting the completeness of the relationship between the forms of being and the statute of art as an expression of participation in God by man and man’s theological and eschatological tension in life, helps to reformulate being in a dynamic way, as the contemporary thought wants, without the elimination of metaphysics.

The aim of this introduction is to present a little known text by J. de Maistre, published forthe first time only in 1870 inside the Oeuvres inedites du comte Joseph de Maistre (vol.IV, Vaton 1870), trying to focus on two main themes: the philosophical meaning of theterms ‘art’ and ‘nature’ in the Savoyard counter-revolutionary thinker. Although Maistre’scritic is directed towards the Rousseauian Discourse on the Origin and Basis of InequalityAmong Men (1755), the background of the discussion involves some wider theoreticalquestions about the metaphysical order of the world, its creatures, and about ‘art’as the result of human historical capabilities.

The research focus of this paper is to investigate the interpretation of Aristotle developed by A. Rosmini and M. Blondel. After an introduction describing the contextualization of the current state of research, the context and the method of investigation of the authors’ writings and texts about the authors and their comparison through a correct hermeneutic operation, to assume a theoretical gateway are defined. Next the Aristotle of Rosmini and the Aristotle of Blondel are analyzed. The final achievement – obtained determining the convergence between the moral form of being of Rosmini and the theoretical-practice passage from act to action in Blondel – is that Rosmini and Blondel don’t take leave from Aristotle and his theorizing but they return there and develop it as “exoteric”, which means belonging to Aristotle’s thought even if it isn’t immediately explicit.

The paper investigates the problem of the not-being’s semanticization in the philosophy of Antonio Rosmini. It shows how the problem is strictly invoked by that of the being’s semanticization. The article points out the Augustinian roots of the not-being’s semanticization developed by Rosmini, proving that above all he wanted to refute the positive semanticization of the not-being developed by Hegel, going through a phenomenological critique of the concept of the becoming elaborated by the German philosopher.

The present contribution provides a chronological overview of the main topics of the interest shown by Pope Paul VI in Rosmini during his entire life. This interest was directed on the one hand to the philosophical thought of Rosmini, seen in the context of the Italian Renaissance, and on the other hand (especially in Paul VI’s mature years) to the charitable activity of the Rosminian Fathers. As far as this second issue is concerned, Paul VI’s attention toward Rosmini is focused on the ideal of the universal charity and on the ways in which this ideal has been fulfilled by the Rosminian order.

Recognizing in Rosmini a solid starting point for anthropo-theo-logical reflection, the investigation has moved from the main writings of the philosopher read in synopsis to the reasoning Del bene del matrimonio cristiano , identified as an unicum of synthesis of Rosmini-thought in a nuptial key. We also wanted to trace the analogies to the Trinitarian ontology, where possible, according to the category of relationship, declined within the paradigm of nuptiality.
