Should I take my regular birth control pill if I have taken the morning after pill?

Someone asked us:

If I take the pill daily, and I feel like I may need to use Plan B if I’m worried, should I take my regular birth control pill that day as well?

Yes. If you’re on the pill and you take Plan B (also known as the morning-after pill or emergency contraception), you should continue taking the pills from your birth control pack as you normally would.

But if you’re taking the pill correctly, then there’s no need for Plan B. Taking the pill regularly protects you all the time, and you don’t need to use emergency contraception unless you miss pills. If you’ve forgotten a pill and you’re not sure whether or not there was a lapse in your pregnancy protection, check out the section of our birth control pill page called “What Do I Do If I Forget to Take the Pill?”
