AJC circulation continues to fall

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s circulation continued to plunge in the six-month period ending March 31, the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported Monday.

The Atlanta daily’s daily circulation fell 24.7 percent to 195,582, while Sunday circulation dived 13.9 percent to 397,925.

“The circulation numbers don’t come as a surprise,” AJC Publisher Michael Joseph said in a statement on the AJC’s website. “They reflect some strategic moves we knew would impact volume. These decisions also allowed us to return to profitability.”

The AJC also noted it has in the past year made tough business decisions, cutting staff, moving to a new headquarters in Dunwoody, raising its single-copy price from 75 cents to $1 and dramatically trimming its distribution area down from 49 counties to 20.

Twenty-four of the 25 biggest American newspapers reported circulation drops. The Wall Street Journal was the sole gainer. Overall, the nation’s daily newspapers saw average daily circulation decline by 8.7 percent from March 2009 to March 2010. Sunday circulation on average was down 6.5 percent.
