Sensitive singer Wheesung steps out of his shell

테스트

[ILGAN SPORTS]

Singer and composer Wheesung is known as a shy introvert, but as a music label president, Wheesung is a man in charge. Ever since he founded his independent label Real Slow in August last year, he’s become a new man thanks to the new responsibilities that come with the title.

“I didn’t used to be a people person, pursuing somewhat unrealistic ideals,” said Wheesung in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “But now I try to see myself in an objective light, and direct myself to more realistic things. The basic elements of my personality won’t change, but I think I’m in the middle of the search for my new self.”

The company’s name, Real Slow, is the stage name that the singer used to use in his younger years before debuting as Wheesung in 2002. The name references his love and passion for R&B music, which still struggles to have much popularity in Korea.

In his new company, there is only a small group of people he has to care for - his manager, a camera director, two music composers and another singer - but this being his first time having to care for professionals other than himself was reason enough for him to switch his style.

“I don’t think my life is going to get better. I’m 37 now, and I imagine how I will be in 10 years. I will be much weaker than now, and probably won’t become more popular. I could or could not be wealthy. When I thought about it realistically, I had to change right now, and not rely on having an uncertain future. My goal now is to find what I can do here and now, and be happy doing it,” said the resolute Wheesung.

The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

Q. What’s the biggest difference in your career now that you’re the head of a label?

A
. In the past, I immersed myself in my personal schedule. Now, I have to take a step back and take a look at everything around me. Things like, is everyone doing their job properly? Or, whether something is actually for the good of us all - I now tend to think in a much broader perspective. I can see myself in an objective light.

What is the meaning behind the name of your label Real Slow?

Real Slow is the name I gave to myself because I wanted to pursue the slow jam genre, which I really liked. I’m known as Wheesung, but I wanted to emphasize my identity as Real Slow and so I made it the company’s name. When you hear the name Wheesung, you usually think of me as an R&B singer, but not all of my songs are ballads.

Some singers say that if they have a hit song that’s too big, then it gets in their way later. Do you agree?

I actually don’t understand that. If you think you’re trapped within your past image and you can’t show a different side of yourself, then that’s just tough luck. But that doesn’t mean that it gets in the way. For me, I thought about how I could get away from “Can’t We,” the song I debuted with. It came out in 2002, but its image still lingers. But, I was able to have other hit songs later on.

You mentioned once that you had a long slump. When was that?

It was mentally very challenging. I had a long slump after I was discharged from the army [in 2013]. I had the chance to be on JTBC program “Hidden Singer” shortly after I was discharged, but I couldn’t keep up the pace. I wasn’t working efficiently, and my concentration was elsewhere.

How did you fight it through?

I went to consultations, and even thought about retiring. Sometimes, I would just make random music without thinking much about it, or eat everything in sight and gain so much weight. Then sometimes I would just hide away from everything. Then, one day, I thought that nobody was going to be affected by the way that I live. People were going to be happy regardless [of what I do]. Everyone else was using their energy to be happy, but I was using my energy to bring myself down. At that moment, I went outside and started to work out.

Did music help you alleviate your stress?

That is one of the saddest things. At a certain point, music didn’t bring me joy. It was really sad. [Now] even if I listen to songs, I listen to them as part of my work. It’s been so many years, and there are fewer moments when I’m actually touched by music.

You established a name for yourself in songwriting as well. How’s that working out?

I’m having second thoughts about commercialized music. When I get commissioned to write songs or lyrics, I communicate with the company’s A&R team, not the singers themselves. I have to make the songs according to the commercial needs of the company.

What are some songs that you have been able to make royalties from?

The year 2010 was my golden time. [Girl group] Orange Caramel’s “A~ing” and “Magic Girl” are some of them. The most recent and popular songs are [singer] Ailee’s “Heaven” and “Singing Got Better.”

Do you have any words of advice for younger celebrities?

It’s become a lot better compared to the past, but pop stars still have to live their lives like they are some kind of gods. They have to be ready wherever and whenever, and they can’t date anyone else. I think the important thing is to distinguish between your different sides. It’s the celebrity that the public sees, so you’re not able to reveal your real self. It’s important that you make your popularity last. I hope they make the best out of what they are given.
