Ambassador Manisha Gunasekera of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Seoul presented Publisher-Chairman of The Korea Post media with a Plaque of Appreciation for the cooperation given for the promotion of friendship and cooperation between Korea and Sri Lanka. She made the presentation at a traditional Sri Lankan dinner at her residence in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul on July 14, 2017.
The dinner was attended also by the members of the embassy, who included Minister Counsellor Jagath Abeywarna, Second Secretary Suminda Mendis, Head of Chancery Sasanga Nikapitiya, Media and Consular Assistant Ms. Sarah Huh, and Ambassador’s Secretary Ms. Hyo Jeong Kim.
The meeting offered an excellent opportunity for the Korea Post media to learn the latest development in Sri Lanka and the bilateral relations, including economic cooperation in the private business sector.
“Sri Lanka teems in rubber, coconut, cinnamon and tea,” said Ambassador Gunasekera speaking with Publisher-Chairman Lee of The Korea Post. “We also have a lot of fish and other marine products, Sri Lanka being an island country.”
She also disclosed that Sri Lanka meant “Country of Light.”
There are many Korean companies enjoying good business in Sri Lanaka. They included Samsung SDS, LG CNS and Daewoo Engineering & Construction.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1977, Korea and Sri Lanka have been enjoying very close ties of cooperation and friendship.
Since the inception of diplomatic ties in 1977, Korea and Sri Lanka have developed cooperative and friendly relations in various fields such as politics, economy, development cooperation, cultural affairs, and personnel exchanges.
Sri Lanka is known as the third largest partner of Korea’s Official Development Assistant (ODA) programs. Sri Lanka is known to have huge potential to be Korea’s future economic partner as Korea is known to be among countries which Sri Lankans wish to visit.
In fact, reports indicate that every year thousands of young Sri Lankans come to Korea to work in various industrial sites across the country, making a meaningful contribution to Korea’s economic development. In addition, thanks to the current Korean Wave, Sri Lankan people are known to develop increasingly strong and warm ties of friendship with the Korean people.
