Marines in the Ukrainian Naval Forces are unable to use force against advancing Russian Troops because the Russians are using peaceful civilians as human shields.

This issue has been raised in a statement forwarded to INSIDER by crews of Ukrainian naval vessels based on Lake Donuzlav (Crimea).

“As a result, we are faced with a choice – either to use weapons, risking injury to civilians in a time of peace without the possibility of our own retreat from the blockade, or, to accept a forceful seizure of the vessel with the humiliation of being made to lower the Flag of the Ukrainian Naval Forces, a symbol that is known all over the World” – noted the Marines.

“Both choices are a loss and are unacceptable. We are seeking a way out of the situation with one main goal – to save lives and maintain the wellbeing of the serviceman of our country” – continued the authors of the statement.

The Marines had hoped that the Government of Ukraine would introduce Martial Law.
Instead of the introduction of Martial Law, the Marines report the following communication from Ukrainian Headquarters:

Official orders since the invasion of Crimean Territory by Russian Federation troops:

“Do not use weapons,” “Do not respond to provocations,” “Act as per the statute.”
Words of moral support: “Good work,” “Hold on,” “We are with you.”

Nevertheless, the Ukrainian Marines are grateful for the help and support of the Ukrainian Media. They have confirmed that they remain faithful to their oath to Ukraine.

Note: Donyzlav lake also referred to as Donuzlav Bay is the biggest lake in Crimea, 47 км². The Southern Naval Base of Ukraine is located there.

Listen to me… listen to me carefully. I want you to understand me, unequivocally. If we make this decision, it is only for the defense of Ukrainian citizens. And let any one of their military personnel shoot at their own people whom… behind whom we will stand. Not in front. But behind. Let them try to shoot at women and children. And I will look at those who will give such an order in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin, Press conference on the situation in Ukraine, Moscow, 4.3.2014.
