CBC orders more Kim’s Convenience

Season one of the comedy has garnered big ratings for the pubcaster.

The CBC has renewed Kim’s Convenience for a second season.

The comedy series is slated to return for 13 more 30-minute episodes in the fall of 2017.

The first season of the series (13 x 30 minutes) has so far garnered an average audience of 933,000 per episode (2+ AMA), with 39% of viewers in the 25 to 54 demo, according to Numeris data provided by CBC. The season’s final two episodes will air back-to-back on Dec. 27 beginning at 8 p.m.

Kim’s Convenience is the CBC’s top-rated comedy of the year, beating Schitt’s Creek season two which averaged 836,000 viewers (2+ AMA). Overall, the series was CBC’s third most-watched, behind Murdoch Mysteries season 10 (1,352,000 2+ AMA) and Heartland season nine (1,048,000 2+ AMA). In addition to being a ratings success, the series has also earned praise as one of the first Canadian sitcoms led by Asian actors.

Based on the award-winning play by Ins Choi, the series follows the Kims, a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in downtown Toronto. It stars Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Shoot The Messenger), Jean Yoon (Orphan Black), Simu Liu (Blood and Water), Andrea Bang (Camp Death III: The Final Summer), Andrew Phung (Adventures of a Pizza Guy) and Nicole Power (Anne of Green Gables).
