Olympics road plans put on show

Work is under way to build a relief road from Dorchester to Weymouth

Plans for an improvement scheme to ease traffic congestion in Weymouth ahead of the 2012 Olympics are going on show.

Some £18m has been set aside for improvements before the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth and Portland.

In October Dorset County Council submitted a business proposal to the Department for Transport.

Residents will be able to view the plan, which was altered after concerns about disruption in some areas were raised in a public consultation.

Road closures

Andy Ackerman, head of highways at the county council, said 15 years of road improvement work would be completed in just two years.

He said: "There will be disruption to traffic while the junctions are transformed.

"In most areas there will probably need to be long working hours, accompanied when necessary with road closures and one-way systems.

"Following comments received as part of this year's public engagement, we have been able to redesign the proposed signals on the Rodwell Road junction with Wyke Road to keep Franchise Street open."

The plans will be on show at Park Church Centre in Chelmsford Street on 4 November, at Hope United Reformed Church in Trinity Street on 6 November and at Weymouth Library on 7 November.

Subject to the Department for Transport's approval of the scheme, work will start early next year.

Work on a new relief road from Dorchester to Weymouth and Portland is already under way and is set to finish in 2011.
