Six cameras in Bridlington town centre will be upgraded with the speakers and operated by police during periods when there are high levels of crime.

Humberside Police will be able to give orders or advice before incidents happen or while they are happening to discourage escalation.

The scheme is part of a drive to reduce assaults, disorder and damage offences.

Six-month trial

The proposed locations for the upgraded cameras are Queen Street, Prince Street, the Promenade, the Esplanade and Garrison Street.

In 2006 almost 24% of Bridlington's violent crime happened in those areas.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is funding a six-month trial of the scheme.

Councillor Jane Evison said: "Making people feel safer on evenings out in Bridlington is an important part of the town's regeneration as it will encourage more residents and visitors to spend their money in pubs, restaurants and other businesses.
