Iran eyewitness: protest videos

Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets across Iran on Friday, defying government warnings against using the annual Quds (Jerusalem) Day rally to resume protests.

Many demonstrators sent their videos to the BBC or posted them on video sharing websites like YouTube. Here is a selection.

ENGHELAB SQUARE, TEHRAN

Confrontation between opposition supporters and security forces in Tehran.

Reports say there were clashes between police and protesters as the march progressed, with some arrests. Stones were thrown, and police used tear gas.

VALI ASR SQUARE, TEHRAN

Appears to show pro-government crowds face-to-face with opposition in Tehran.

This appears to show pro-government crowds and opposition supporters face-to-face separated by a line of security guards.

The crowds are chanting support for opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi.

Later they chant: "Liar, liar" - probably in reference to President Ahmadinejad's assertion that he won the disputed election, according to BBC Persian TV.

ISFAHAN

Appears to show opposition crowds gathering in Enghelab Square, Isfahan.

Opposition crowds appear to gather on Enghelab Square, in the central city of Isfahan.

They are chanting: "Not Gaza, not Lebanon, I will die for Iran."

This seems to be a reference to annual Quds Day rally - held in support of Palestinians and oppressed people across the world.

SHIRAZ

Appears to show opposition crowds gathering in Shiraz.

This video appears to show opposition crowds gathering in the south-western city of Shiraz.

They are also chanting: "Not Gaza, not Lebanon, I will die for Iran".

Again this appears to be a reference to Quds Day, according to BBC Persian TV.

The Iranian government organises Quds Day rallies nationwide every year on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

KARIM KHAN BRIDGE, TEHRAN

This video appears to show opposition crowds gathering at Karim Khan bridge, in Tehran.

They are chanting: "Long live Mousavi, Karroubi be prosperous."

Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi were presidential contenders in the disputed June election. Both have become focal points for opposition protests.
