Newly crowned PDC World Darts champion John Part described his victory over Phil Taylor as the "ultimate" moment of his career.

The Canadian suffered the indignity of a 7-0 defeat in the final at the hands of the same opponent two years ago.

And last year Part was runner-up to Taylor, who is widely recognised as the greatest ever darts player, in both the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.

But following Sunday's thrilling 7-6 win, Part said: "This is everything I could have wanted.

"There was no meaning in beating anyone else in the final - Phil Taylor was the ultimate for me.

"I'm sure I would have been satisfied if I had won a world championship and it was someone else who had beaten Phil earlier in the competition.

"But this way it means so much more because it was me who defeated him, me who ended it. I'm the champion now."

Part placed his achievement above lifting the 1994 Embassy World Championship.

He said: "When I won that it taught me a lot about myself, but I was nowhere near as good a player then as I am now.

"I won it on adrenaline and instinct. I think the player I was then would not have defeated Phil Taylor.

"Winning that tournament meant a lot to me and anyone who wins an Embassy title is a true champion.

"But competing with the best player ever and to come out on top means a lot. It is a more mature satisfaction.

"I'm also the first player since the split in darts to win both world championships and that really means a lot to me."

Taylor, meanwhile, insists he will return even stronger after his defeat.

He said: "I've lost a darts match, I haven't had my head knocked off my shoulders.

"I will be a little bit stronger next time, you can be sure of that."
